Dear All,

My mother went thr' the operation of GB removal, Pancreas part removal, colon

bypass on 27th March.

She was in ICU for one week. She was transferred to special room in hospital

after that.

Following are the problems being faced by her:- (1) Her legs and almost all body

has considerable swelling. (2) Though she doesnt have nausia she is not eating

or drinking sufficient. (3) She is not having any strength in her legs hence she

can not walk. She can walk three or four steps using walker. Not more than that.

(4) She is having one bed sore.

Earlier when she was in ICU and even after coming out she was speaking

irrelevently. This continued for @ 4-5 days. But since last 3 days she is

speaking normal.

Can any of you advice of why she is having above problems. Especially what about

swelling on legs and body? And also weak legs?

We had thought that after the operation everything will be alright. But instead

we are facing many such problems. Please advice.

Thanks.

Satish,

I am sorry to hear your mom is having such hard problems. I am not a doctor

but when they have her on a lot of IV fluids and since she can't get up and

walk the swelling will happen. I hope the weakness passes soon. Sometimes after

surgery and when you still can't eat properly the weakness is really

prominent.

I hope she is feeling better soon!

HI Satish; I am glad that your mother has come through the surgery.

She has been through a lot and it will take time for her to recover.

Does she have a history of cardiac trouble. I dont know how they do

it there but here after somebody has abdominal surgery they put

special hose on the legs. Some are like stockings and some are

inflatable with a machine that massage the legs and helps to increase

circulation. You can ask about them to the doctors. The inflatable

one is called a Sequential Compression Device and they are inflated

intermittedly and are very helpful to circulation.

It has not been that long since her surgery and being in the ICU is

stressful to the body as well. The rule of thumb is, every day in

the ICU is worth a weeks recovery. Its good that she is gettin gup

at all and taking a few steps is better then no steps at all. give

her time and know that she is in my prayers. She is already blessed

to have such a loving son.

Warmly,
