Guest guest
I've wondered about using the betaine to " fix' low stomach acid. It addresses the problem, but does't address what might be the underlying cause. Any ideas about what might be the cause of low stomach acid? I also wonder about using something like bitters which are supposed to naturally stimulate your body to create more stomach acid. I have the same problem, constipation, yeast issues, I can take 4-6 betaine hydrochloride pills with a meal and never feel a burning. Hours after a meal I can still " taste " the food in my stomach, or at least I know it's still there. Sometimes, I drink apple-cider vinegar mixed with water saccharine with meals and that helps with my digestion. I also have fine brittle hair which keeps falling out, but none of the other signs (other than overweight) of hypothyroid (though my TSH is at about 2.7). Guest guest
Hi Theresa, << I've wondered about using the betaine to " fix' low stomach acid. It addresses the problem, but does't address what might be the underlying cause. Any ideas about what might be the cause of low stomach acid? >> Some think low stomach acid is hereditary. I don't know if using betaine HCl and having a good diet will trigger the body to start producing its' own HCl or if a person would need to stay on it for life. << I also wonder about using something like bitters which are > supposed to naturally stimulate your body to create more stomach acid. >> They do help some people. Some find enzymes, lemon juice/a. cider vinegar with meals and/or cayenne pepper also helpful. Guest guest
I did a stupid thing at lunch and bought some Swedish bitters at the HFS and drank it with water before lunch. I knew the first ingredient was Aloe Vera (illegal) but was desperate to try something different (hadn't gone #2 since Friday). I paid the price with watery, mucousy D a few hours later and feeling spacey all afternoon. Stupid stupid stupid. I will do some more research, and maybe get tested for low stomach acid. I wonder because it seems like I could take a whole bottle of betaine hcl and wouldn't feel burning, so I wonder what's going on there (I think I've taken up to 8 with no burning sensation). I take lipase with anything fatty that I eat and I still burp later. Something's obviously going on there, causing my main symptom of C and bloating. I also have fine, brittle hair which falls out continuously. When I drink ACV (apple cider vinegar) with water and saccharine with meals, I feel the stubble of regrowth on my scalp within a few days, so that's a good sign. I guess I should keep it up :-). Oh yeah, I did take cayenne for a while and that really regulated me. Should keep that up too. I just bought hot cayenne in bulk and made up my own pills using empty " OOO " gelatin capsules. I'm an advocate of looking for underlying causes rather than treating symptoms, so I'm still trying to figure out why (other than heredity) I have low stomach acid (aka hypochloridia). Sometimes I think I do too much research on the internet and need to look at old library books for answers. Thanks for replying Sheila. Guest guest
--- Not sure if this is correct, but I read that helicobactor pylori infection neutralizes stomach acid in order to survive. Maybe a test for this can be done. Regards Glynis mam to Jasmine, 7 yrs Diagnosed with Kabuki Syndrome NG tube fed. Guest guest
I think it's time to see the GP and get some tests done. I'm not sure what the best way is to test for h pylori.
