Guest guest
Hi, y'all (notice the S. Carolina accent) Hope you didn't miss me too much. It's good to be home. I'm back at work and rarin' to go. I had the MGB on 11/9 at . I did okay. But the first night of my recovery when they gave me my first dose of Carafate, about a minute later I went into the most excruciating pain!! It wasn't the Carafate, but the first stimulation to my " new " stomach, I think. I thought, " Oh, my god, my stomach just came apart! " Plus it was scary because my legs were trapped in those things to keep us from getting blood clots, so I couldn't move! So my friend called the nurse in and they got me out of bed. Eventually I ended up sitting in the recliner which they pulled out by the bed. The nurses at were really the BEST! They gave me a shot of Demerol and soon I was asleep or in LaLa land or something. After the initial bout of bad pain, I just had the regular sore stomach and I would get an occasional " catch " that would hurt. All of that was not bad. The reason I go into detail is that when I had that jolt of pain--well, I have heard so many people just sail through--it's either perfect or failure. You know what I mean. Few people have anything " negative " to say. So when I had that pain I really thought something had gone wrong. But anyone else, if you have a really bad pain after surgery, don't be afraid! It's okay, your insides didn't just come apart! And the Demerol works so it wasn't the end of the world. Now I feel great. I'm definitely tired, but I was pretty tired before the surgery, too. I did Xmas shopping yesterday and then followed that up with an evening of bowling. Toward the end of the night it was all I could do to get back to my car! In any event, I promised Dr.R that I would give a detailed and accurate account of the pain I experienced because it will help to alleviate the fears of those of us who have something happen other than the: i was up and walking 2 minutes after I woke up and everything was peachy! I love you all and if have any questions about this, drop me a line! : ) Sperb ( from CA)

Guest guest
Hi My name is Barbara, I recently just learned of the MGB surgery, exchanged an email or so with the doc, and am seriously contemplating this surgery. I have a ton of stuff to do to get my life in order for the surgery. My biggest problem, would be the support system. I have a few good friends who I am very close to, and live with my 15 year old son, who has mixed emotions when I bring it up. As a single mom my biggest concern is the down time from the surgery. Today is only November 19th. I read your email as saying that you had surgery on the 9th, and are already christmas shopping and bowling. That was really good for me to read. I haven't applied for the surgery or anything else yet.. I have much research and learning to do. Any words from you folks out there on your experiences would be great for me. Thanks Barbara glory@... Re: I'M BACK!!!!! Hi, y'all (notice the S. Carolina accent) Hope you didn't miss me too much. It's good to be home. I'm back at work and rarin' to go. Guest guest
The pain was mostly scary. So now I'm going crazy because I think my stomach is too big. I can drink 8oz of water down without a problem. I am really scared I'm in for a disappointment. Oh, gack! Maybe I'm paranoid (hopefully). Anyhow any words of encouragement or whatever would be appreciated at this point. By the way, I sure appreciated meeting you--you really had a level head and a good sense of humor. And your husband's a hunk!!!! LOL Love, Sperb

Guest guest
You know what's funny--you say that my shopping and bowling by the 18th was great--you should hear some of the other people. I swear, the day after the surgery some are up and around. But each person is different. After my surgery on the 9th, I was in the hospital on the 10th and back in my hotel room on the 11th. On the 11th I had to take my friend to the airport so she could get back to work. We are not supposed to drive for two weeks but I was not on any drugs and was doing just fine. I did spend a lot of time sleeping the first couple days after the surgery, but I was jet lagged to the max and I tend to sleep too much anyway. So the answer is that each person is individual. Many are capable of resuming their daily activities almost immediately. Just keep getting posts from people--and keep me posted!!!! Guest guest
I had gall bladder surgery about a year 1/2 ago. I was up riding my bike two days later..so you never know. I am in salt Lake city. A hospital here does this type of surgery, but I am uncertain if it is the MGB or not. I will be calling them in the morning. Monday(tomorrow is my birthday I will be 36) I want to spend this year enjoying my body and making changes to make it feel better........ trying to feel optimistic..Barbara RE: I'M BACK!!!!! Guest guest
Barbara, This is so hard for your sixteen year old to understand... it just sounds too unreal to him, I am sure he trully don't understand your situation because we have a tendency to hide our true feelings from our kids about things like being over-weight, and how unhappy we are with that. My son is also 16. I have a 24 and 26 yr. old sons also, who don't live at home. Anyway, even though he was unsure of what I was actually doing with this surgery, he seems very happy now, that I have had it. You might want your son to e-mail him at comic@... subject atten: Matt And he can tell you how great I feel now that I am post-op. (you know the saying when Mom's happy, everybody's happy!!) Good luck, on your research. When you finally decide this is for you, get going on your application and insurance request it all takes 2 to 3 months before you will actually get a date for surgery (if you're lucky). Any questions, or doubts,,just post on here, we all are very helpful, and supportive. Trudy/Indiana Post-Op Self Pay 11-3-00 339 starting weight 323 today!!! Re: I'M BACK!!!!! Hi, y'all (notice the S. Carolina accent) Hope you didn't miss me too much. It's good to be home. I'm back at work and rarin' to go.
