Guest guest
Does this sound right? Since I eliminated all illegal foods, the grocery shopping bill is consistently $300/week to feed myself and an 8 YO, 6 YO and 3 YO. My husband works so much, he only joins us for about 2 meals/week -- if that. We have not yet used any nut flours. Is it supposed to be that expensive to do SCD?! - --------------------------------- Ahhh...imagining that irresistible " new car " smell? Check outnew cars at Yahoo! Autos. Guest guest
It depends on if you're doing all organic. Our bill was enormous the first month or two of SCD, and that was because I was doing everything organic. We couldn't afford it, so I had to switch back to non organic foods. I do buy grassfed meats, organic milk for my yogurt making, and either grassfed or organic butter. I buy eggs from a local farm when they have extra. For produce, I just can't buy organic. It's too expensive. Our grocery bill is probably $800 per month for the five of us. Meleah grocery bills Does this sound right? I average 1000-1500 a month for a family of four. But I'm the only one 100% SCD; my husband eats oatmeal every morning, and my children eat sprouted wheat bread. They also eat a lot of beans. I buy all organic. (Sometimes a chicken costs $20! ) I stayed consistently at 1000 in the summer, when I grew all of my own vegetables. Unfortunately, meat, milk, cheese is expensive. Some of what saves money is: tinned sardines (gross, but cheap), Trader Joe's, and I shop at the Farmer's Market weekly. Honey is also very expensive. So now I have a beehive (yet to harvest). Eventually, I will get chickens, but in the meantime, I figure, it's worth it.
Guest guest
I have found it expensive to do SCD, especially with working outside of the home and not having the time to do the homemade stuff as much as I would like. Guest guest
There are 3 of us doing SCD - 2 adults and one 13 year old. We buy what we can organic in the produce section. We are considering getting a deep freezer to buy and store " organic " meats in bulk. Currently we purchase everything at a regular grocery store. The nearest HFS is over an hour away so we've never been. We stock up when meats are on sale and freeze. We eat very simple meals. For example we might have chicken with steamed squash for supper. Really no " dishes " except for when we make spaghetti with spaghetti squash. Our average grocery bill is 100 - 150 a week. I should add that that does not include our orders of honey, nut flours, & raw nuts that we place about every 6 - 8 weeks. W.
Guest guest
I'd definitely encourage the purchase of a depp freezer if you have the funds and space for it. We have one, and we do buy our grassfed meats and butter in large quantities. If you purchase from one of the farms on eatwild.com, you will likely spend about what you would spend at one of your higher end grocery stores. I order maybe 20-30 lbs. of chicken and beef each, have it shipped, and it costs me between $200 and $250 for each order. It lasts us months. Guest guest
I will purchase locally grown if I go this route - there are several organic / free range / grass fed / grass finished / etc. " farmers " here in Missouri that we have access to. Thanks, W. Re: grocery bills There are 3 of us doing SCD - 2 adults and one 13 year old. We buy what we can organic in the produce section. Guest guest
This is the first topic I can share on. My daughter has been SCD for 3 weeks. Yes, Grocery Bills are shockingly high. I try to buy organic, meats that claim no hormones/grass fed/no antibiotics. My daughter is still in the early stages of the diet. Only a few veggies, fruits, meats. I hope to get over to the farmers market because I hear organic produce is cheaper. I spent $100 today and basically 95 % of it was for my daughter. Guest guest
I was discussing this with a friend and she pointed out that that is why poor people are often overweight. Starch is cheap, compared to all other food " groups. " My kids are losing weight now that we are starch-free (they were already thin). I'm not sure what to do since I can't afford to buy more of the proteins/carbs, etc. - sherylsuml wrote: This is the first topic I can share on. My daughter has been SCD for 3 weeks. Guest guest
Yes a package of noodles is cheaper than meat, fruit, vegetables. I've also seen many that spend a fortune on and eat only organic GF/CF that are extremely over weight - because they still eat the junk - I mean a GF/CF cheeto ????? Come on ! This is what made me choose SCD - the nutritious aspect of whole foods - not the same over processed foods but without gluten and casein. Our son lost weight and now looks healthy - even his naturopathic allergy doctor says he is looking great. He had gotten chubby in the past 2 years. He went from wearing slim size pants to husky in 2 yrs. Now his pants are falling off him. He only lost about 10 lbs the first 6 weeks but it made a dramatic difference. The belly fat is gone. Hubby and I lost about 10 pounds the first month but now 4 months later have regained it. But the interesting thing is, people are asking me if I've lost weight. When I say no they respond with " Well you are looking very healthy - I can see it in your face. You look like you've lost weight. " I might add that I could stand to lose about 20 -30 lbs. I think it is the delicious nut bread and pancakes. We have cut way back on those at this time. Guest guest
I am glad there are other people on SCD who want to lose weight too. I did SCD for 3 months and did not lose any weight, but then I decided to do the intro diet and phase in the foods and I have lost 15 pounds. I also feel so much better and am able to eat yogurt from cow milk. I used to be allergic to dairy! I can also have butter now too. I think not eating honey and the nut flour really helped me, as well as not eating things that I am sensitive to. I would not have known had I not phased them in. No carrots or tomatoes for me at this point. -- Re: Re: grocery bills Yes a package of noodles is cheaper than meat, fruit, vegetables.
