Would you suggest the cheesecake recipe? I've got a batch of whipping cream yogurt in the crockpot and wonder if the probiotics and enzymes were killed, if they would be more tolerable. If lactose was the root cause of this flare (as well as dropping sulfasalazine at the same time) could that lead to a dairy intolerance for a while? I remember my first 6 months on the diet, I could only tolerate " cooked " yogurt. I just don't want to keep losing weight, and have so little to eat. Can one subsist on eggs, fish, blended chicken soup (w/carrots) and avacado alone? I am cautiously trying very diluted grape juice and will make it into jello today. The amazing thing, is I dropped the sulfa because of bizarre side effects (numb hands, intense dizziness) which also began at the same time as starting the incorrectly made yogurt. Those symptoms resolved after about 3 weeks. Now I am back on the full dose of sulfasalazine, and.....nothing! I was also taking LDN. My only thought is the lactose was acting like an opiod, and the opiod channel blockading effect of the LDN was causing intense nuerological symptoms. Either that, or it was a strange synergistic effect between the lactose, sulfa, and LDN. I am off the LDN (since it hasn't been helping at all). But it's crazy what lactose can do to a body! And at the time, my Crohn's was doing well; solid bowel movements, a little mucus, no urgency, I was tolerating fruit and honey for the first time in a long time, so you would think my gut would have a relative level of health, despite an elevated CRP reading. I've never had Crohn's in the small intestine, always the large. It did take 5 weeks of eating 2-3 bowls of yogurt to lead to my current demise, so it wasn't instantaneous. I wish I had gotten a clue earlier on. Boy, if I can get through this flare up, it sure shows what fanaticism is truly required. Even after years on the diet, a small amount of lactose (though the yogurt was probably a large amount) could cause such terrible regression is amazing! I wonder also how the two types of starch in my sulfasalazine have kept me from fully recovering. I need to take the enteric coated version. Has anyone found a compounding pharmacy that uses enteric coating that is legal? What could I request for a legal enteric coating? I am determined to make everything 100% from now on. I guess I am starting over again. Sigh. Debora
Guest guest
Hi Debora, > If you are having bleeding the > > natural enzymes in the yogurt may be what is bothering you and not > > possible residual lactose in the yogurt. You really need to get the diarrhea and bleeding under control. << If lactose was the root > cause of this flare (as well as dropping sulfasalazine at the same > time) could that lead to a dairy intolerance for a while? >> If you look at the diagrams in BTVC (pages 22-24, chapter 5) you'll see the intestinal cells have enzymes at the tips. When ill the cells can be damaged so much that you will lose some of the enzyme action necessary to digest disaccharides (lactose etc..). When in a flare one of the first enzymes to suffer damage is lactase. You may be unable to tolerate a number of foods right now not just dairy. << I remember > my first 6 months on the diet, I could only tolerate " cooked " yogurt. > I just don't want to keep losing weight, and have so little to eat. >> I understand about fearing further weightloss but you need to first get your flare under control - then your body will be able to absorb calories and nutrients and you can then work on adding some weight. If you are unable to digest high calorie foods it will just prolong your flare. It usually takes me a while after a serious flare before the weight loss stops. Then I stabilize and slowly start to put weight back on. << Can one subsist on eggs, fish, blended chicken soup (w/carrots) and avacado alone? >> Avacado isn't on the intro diet.
