Farmed fish fed tainted meal

Same contaminant prompted massive pet-food recall

MARK HUME

From Wednesday's Globe and Mail

VANCOUVER — Canada's largest producer of aquaculture feed issued a

product recall yesterday after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration

announced that farmed fish have been fed meal contaminated with

melamine - the same chemical that has tainted pet food throughout North

America.

The levels of contamination in the fish feed are so low that they

probably do not pose any human health risk, officials say, but

melamine, a chemical found in plastics and pesticides, is not approved

for use in any feed.
