We are just starting SCD and need to deal with Danny's various

medications, many (or all) of which seem to include illegal

ingredients:

1. Singulair chewable tablets: mannitol, microcrystalline

cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, red ferric oxide, croscarmellose

sodium, cherry flavor, aspartame, and magnesium stearate.

2. Zantac 25 EFFERdose: aspartame, monosodium citrate anhydrous,

povidone, sodium bicarbonate, and sodium benzoate.

3. Mercaptopurine (6-MP): corn and potato starch, lactose,

magnesium stearate, and stearic acid.

4. Zyrtec liquid: Banana flavor; glacial acetic acid; glycerin;

grape flavor; methylparaben; propylene glycol; propylparaben; sodium

acetate; sugar syrup; and water.

5. Nystatin: Compounded by Hopewell pharmacy

He also is on Nasonex nasal spray.

How do you deal with prescription medications that contain illegal

ingredients on SCD?

Thanks!

A lot of medications can be compounded to be SCD compliant. You can talk to

Hopewell Pharmacy about it since they make the Nistatin for your son. Lee

Silsby Pharmacy in Ohio seems to be the most up on compounding meds, and the

pharmacist there is very familiar with SCD. You can always call him to see what

he can do. However, Elaine's rule was always that if you absolutely need a

medication, and it cannot be made into an SCD legal form, you use it anyway.

Think about what he is taking, and you and his doctor must decide whether all of

these are absolutely necessary.
