, I also have asthma, not as severe as yours, but when you are having an

attack they are all severe..I take flovent and serevent 2 puffs each morning

and night and mine is under control until I get a cold and then it rears its

ugly head..I also have a machine to get on when necessary...I had the surgery

4/20/2000, and have only been sick once since then...They gave me a breathing

treatment right before I went into surgery..they are just so complete with

everything they do..You really need to see Dr. Rutledge and he will let you

know..I feel like my quality of life have increased greatly..I did not have

asthma induced from excersize...I have an appointment to see my Asthma

specialist on 11/27/2000.. this will be the first time since the MGB, and he

did support me in my decision to have this surgery...Please speak to your

Doctors and Dr. Rutledge..But I feel it can only help your situation...Good

Luck and let me hear from you.

Hi, my name is and I live in Ontario, Canada.

I joined the group a week ago have been voraciously reading all your

informative contributions however I have not seen anything that

specifically refers to my situation. So I would like to ask if anyone

with a similar medical profile to me has been through MGB and what has

their experience been?

This is my story. I am 50 years old and 270 lbs. I weighed 130 lbs at

age 30 but over the last 20 years I have steadily gained at the rate

of 5-10 lbs a year. My weight gain has been usually associated with the

use of prednisone for the treatment of severe persistent asthma. Once

gained, the weight has been impossible to shift because my exercise

induced asthma severely limits my physical activity (walking 20-30 feet

leaves me breathless).

I have had asthma since the age of 2. It is hyper reactive to multiple

environmental allergies and respiratory infections (colds etc). My top

FEV readings are 33% and I take all the meds available ( theodur,

accolate, reactine, ventolin, atrovent, serevvent, flovent and flonase) to

manage daily symptoms and function. I also have free gastric reflux

which exacerbates matters.

I have come to the point ( and age)where the combined affect of my

weight and asthma have dramatically affected my quality of life and I

feel I have to do something before the combination disables me further.

I therefore got a referral to a surgeon and have spent the last four

months going through medical and nutritionist evaluation appointments in

preparation for a conventional gastroplasty. I experienced a big

setback however when my lung specialist advised that he could not

support the proposed surgery because of the high risk due to my already

compromised breathing ability.

I am really hoping that if I can come up with enough reassuring

information on the laproscopic procedure he may support that as an

option for me. This may be my last hope in getting some quality of

life back.

So please if anyone has a similar condition and been through MGB, tell

me your story. Thanks

in Ontario

Wow . So sorry that you have all these problems. You might want to email Dr.

Rutledge directly at DrR@... and ask him if these things will disqualify

you for MGB. He can best answer that.

I hope that if you are not a candidate for MGB that you will look into all of

the various procedures available for weight loss nowadays. We here understand

just how vital it is to lose weight for our health,

I wish you well !

Hi , welcome to the group. I don't know if there is someone (among the

900+) on this list who has had a situation similar to yours - but my advice

is for you to email Dr. Rutledge directly (drr@...) and tell him

exeactly what you've told us. He will tell you what your options are, and

there is no one more qualified to do so. Good luck!

Hi ,

My name is Betty and I had an MGB on 9/29/00. About 12 hours after a very

easy and uneventful surgery, I woke up in pain. It was discovered that I

had a dreaded leak. I ended up back in surgery to repair it and in the

hospital for 7 days.

The reason I am telling you this is Dr. R. felt like my age, which is 60 and

the fact that I had taken prednisone in years past for asthma were the most

likely reasons for the leak. I only had asthma for a couple years back in

the mid 80's and only took prednisone 3 or 4 times, but he said that could

still affect the way my tissues held a stitch or a staple. I am fine now

and eating and losing (slowly) but please, please talk with Dr. R. about the

prednisone. I do not want to discourage you and yes, I would have this

surgery again if I needed to. But it did get somewhat scary the week after.

Good luck to you and stay in touch with us.
