Guest guest
I wanted to introduce myself. I came upon this website after reading about SCD on a DAN! doctor's website. My son is 5 and has HFA. His main issues are language, sensory and stimming. I also have a daughter 3, who has not been diagnosed, that has severe language delays. My father-in-law has had major issues with his gut all his life and is currently GF. My brother-in-law has crohn's disease and is going the prescription route. So I've always felt there was a connection with my son and my husband's side of the family. My son is a very picky eater. We went GF/CF and he started to eat more things but his stimming has increased. He was begging for rice cakes (never thought I would see that day) and GF muffins. What drew me to this diet is it does not allow rice. I felt like rice was becoming a major problem for him. We went on a trip and he ate tons of rice cake and he was the worst I had ever seen (stimming, foggy, not interested in interacting). So here I am. I'm hoping to start this diet soon. I want to read more and become prepared and get all the bad stuff out of my house. I'm scared to start because he has a good disposition and he's very high functioning, but there are certain things that are holding him back (language and stimming) that I hope I can help with this diet. I've taken sugar away from him before and it was not pretty. I plan on having the whole family on the diet just to make it easier on me. I'm hoping it will help my daughter too. Wish us luck! Guest guest
Dear , I'm pretty new to the diet too (two months) and I have a child with autism, but I just wanted to say don't be scared. I can honestly say my son seems to prefer this diet to the previous standard diet, because there are so many yummy foods, including a bit of honey for the sweet tooth. I love it too! I'm confident you will find foods and recipes that work for your family. This list is a great resource too. Thanks for sharing, Mother of Virya, age 16, autism, LKS, epilepsy, etc. SCD since March 07 and calmer, speaking more clearly Daugherty wrote: I wanted to introduce myself. Guest guest
Hello , I'm glad you are going to start the diet with all your family, it's a great diet. The best thing to do is to start reading as much as you can, but sometimes too much information at the same time tends to be confusing (at least it was for me)... so, just try to take one step at a time and focus on the diet itself before you start with the supplements. They're necessary and can make the difference especially in the kid's behavior but I think the right time to start any supplements is after you have been on the diet for a while letting it work with the healing. You'll find out which supplements to use with your son along the way. This is a wonderful diet, you'll be surprised of the great improvements you'll see. Guest guest
Welcome to the group. You obviously realize there's a connect because you've seen his reaction when you've taken away sugar in the past. The key is removing all disacarids and polysacarides though as you will discover when reading Breaking the Vicious Cycle by Elaine Gottschall. She outlines the science behind why the diet works, and how to implement it properly. This is a must read before getting started. You can also read more info on pecanbread.com and btvc.info. I'd advise reading through everything you can on these sites. It will be a lot of information, so you won't remember everything the first time around, but it will give you a clear understanding of why this works. Don't be overwhelmed or afraid. You're doing the best thing for him with changing his diet, and you'll be amazed. It may be rough at first because he will be in a state of " withdrawal " from the starches he's been eating, but things will improve. We're here to help, so ask questions, complain, be concerned, whatever. Meleah Hello - New Here I wanted to introduce myself.
