CP but no pain

Hello all,

I joined the group after I was dx with CP in 2002 and follow all the

messages with interest. I feel a fraud lately, though, because I have

had no pain whatsoever.

That's not to say no symptoms - I have some of the gastric distress we

all feel. Pressure, gas, constipation/diarrhea, unpredictable

exhaustion and so forth. So I'm not doubting my dx. I watch my diet

very, very carefully, take the enzymes with any food and have been

taking Nortriptyline (mild antidepressant for chronic pain) for the

past 2 years.

I'd like to hear from anyone else who has experienced a similar

" honeymoon " stage of this disease? I haven't had a bad flare-up of

panc pain in many months. But I'm always anticipating it, wondering

if the next stressful event in my life is going to set it off. I've

limited my activities because of not knowing if I'll feel up to it -

you all can relate to that, I think.

Is there anyone out there who has had long periods without a flare up?

How long? And then what happened?

I've learned so much from the PAI members. Thank you all.

Aloha,

in Hawaii

I read your post and wanted to reply. While I have daily pain and

suffer with all the other conditions you described, I just passed my 3

year mark of NOT going to the hospital, ER or having any surgeries. I'd

call that a pretty nice " honeymoon " period. I wonder how long this will

last for me before all the above set back in. I was at a point where I

was going to the ER every 3 months or so. Enjoy this relief while you

have it. Wish I could help you with your other questions but I am in

the " wondering stage " of all that myself. :-)

> Hello all,

>Hi,

had his first attack in late 1999 early 2000. This was followed

up with a series of frequent attacks. He stabilized after six or more

months in and out of hospitals and then home TPN - gradually starting

to eat and feel normal. He spent a year almost weaning off all the

narcotics. From then on he was fine. No symptoms, no pain. He

returned to all his normal activities and could do whatever he wanted

to do. He never drank any alcohol. Then suddenly last fall, for no

known reason his pancreas flared again and we are still struggling. So

he was healthy for nearly four years. We thought he was cured, but I

guess these things flare up whenever they decide. We have hope

because of the good times before and are waiting for another good time

or a transplant of islet cells. Best wishes and prayers.

When I was first diagnosed with recurring acute pancreatitis at the

age of eight I had problems with pancreatitis and hospitalizations

until I was fourteen. From fourteen to eighteen I didn't have any

pain except maybe once a year. The pain was never bad enough to go to

the hospital. I was very good at watching what I ate, taking my

enzymes, etc. Then one day when I was eighteen, December 9, I woke in

the middle of the night with horrible pancreas pain. Not to frighten

you, but from that time until I had my TP/ICT at the age of 21 I was

extremely ill.

Before five years ago my normal routine was pain free for about 6 months and

then I would have an attack go to the hospital then come out fine and reasy to

go again. But 5 years ago I don't know what happen I thought i was going in the

hospital for the normal 6 month cycle but when I got out the pain never went

away and it has been a long 5 years now. I know that in 91 when I had my first

surgery I was fine and pain free for about 3 years. Now I have decided to do

the TP-ICT and I am soooo scared. I just hope that when June 10th comes that I

can go through with it. There is so much unknown to this disease and I so jsut

want to live a normal college life. I hope that this surgery will give me at

least my senior year of no pain. That would be great. I really don't remember

what it like to be pain free. It will be great to have that feeling anf it's so

weird to me and also sad that a pain free life is unknow by me at least in my

memory. I jope that you never have to

experiecne something like this but it is good to be aware of what may happen.

I also wanted to add that I know stressful times for me make my pain a lot

worse. Have a great day. St. Louis, MO

I had about a 4 year period without pain at one time, but that was

because I had a surgery to help with the problem. Unfortunately, my

pancreatitis came back because it was already chronic and we didn't know

it. The surgery was supposed to fix my birth defect (pancreas divisum),

but it didn't, just gave me a " honeymoon " period where I didn't have the

pain for a while. I did still follow the low fat diet and such because

it's just more healthy and I didn't really want to tempt fate so to

speak. It was horrible when the pancreatitis came back. Basically, I

just had a pancreatitis attack because I was under a great deal of

stress at work.No work up with a little pain here or a little pain

there, just a full blown panc attack. I knew what it was right away.

So, I don't know if mine is really like yours, but I thought I'd better

tell you anyways. I hope that your's lasts a good long time too.

Relief from the pain for any lenght of time is a blessing.
