Guest guest
My husband Mark Dempsey is on oxycontin and delandid for his pain. He started with a new flair up this weekend. I finally convinced him to call his pain management doctor today. We are waiting on a call back from the nurse. any suggestions as to ways to help him alliviate his pain without having to go to the hospital or doctor for a shot of stronger pain med? He takes 10 enzymes with each meal and takes 2 insulin shots a day. We almost lost him in Sept. to pancreatitis brought on my undiagnosed diebetes (his fault for not going to the doctor sooner). Do any of you use a tinge care unit with your pancreatitis? My mother gave him her unit to see if it would work for pancrease pain. She has used it for years with her bad back. anyway....my prayers go out for each of you daily. I don't post often, but keep up with what is going on via the group site. Thank you for any help you can offer. Becca
Guest guest
Hi Becca, When I am nausious and can't keep down my pain med pills, my Dr prescribed and oral morphine solution. I absorb the morphine almost immeadiately and get relief. I use this with Phenergan suppositories and find it helps a lot. The solution looks like cough medicine and and 2 teaspoons is 40mg of morphine. Hope this helps..Jim
Guest guest
Hi Becca, Depending on the physical state that your husband is in and how severe the pain is, he may not be able to manage this at home. That being said, if this is just a " normal " flare (and over time, you get to know what is normal or not) he may be able to manage it by reducing his food intake to just liquids for a while (a low fat nutritional drink) and increasing his pain meds and being real strict with the anti-nausea pills. The dilaudid and oxycontin are very strong oral meds to take and I am not sure if there are any stronger available for at home use (I have been told in my case that there are not). If he is vomitting them up, maybe he could try the actiq lolipop. What I do too during a flare is restrict my activity and find my most comfortable resting position (knees up, supported by a couple of body pillows while in a reclining mode - basically a " v " position, to take the pressure off the abdomen). Putting a heating pad on my abdomen while I am in this position also helps. As far as the TENS unit (I think that is what you are asking about) I used it for a couple of months for pancreas pain and didn't find it too effective but the one thing that the PT told me was to move it around as pancreas pain is oftentimes referred so where you feel the pain isn't where it is coming from. So she had me try different places on the abdomen and different places on my back. I was also advised to try different intensities to the pulses as wells as different rhythms to the pulses. I found though that it could be more irritating than soothing as the pulses made me feel like it was continuously spasming. Some people have had good results with this though. It is certainly worth a try but to be fair, a person's doctor will caution you about not using it on your own without a doctor's supervision.....but that may just be a butt saving thing as my doctor never once asked me about it in follow-up. Hope this helps but sometimes the only thing to break the cycle of pain from a flare is to go for the shot........ Laurie
Guest guest
You should talk to your Dr about taking morphine with panc...It tends to make the duct of the pancreas spasm.which will make your pain worse before you get any relief.....I hope this finds you and yours well......Mark Re: pain med question > Hi Becca, When I am nausious and can't keep down my pain med pills, my > Dr prescribed and oral morphine solution. Guest guest
Just my 2 cents. I take morphine for my panc pain and have never had an adverse reaction to it. I also suffer from SOD. Nothing else works for my pain except the Morphine when it gets that bad. Different people, different solutions. :-) Sandy in Ca Mark E. Guest guest
You are so right......but the interesting thing is, that morphine does tend to make the duct spasm......but Demoral which is the only that that works for me will have the same effect on the Gall bladder if you are having gall bladder problems.....Meds are a trip on how they work.....I hope this finds you and yours well Mark > Just my 2 cents.
