Guest guest
Hi, We found out 6 months ago that my 7 year old son has Asperberg's Syndrom on the Autism Spectrum. He is now gf/cf and eats limited phenols and have seen some good changes but he still struggles -- esp at school. I am thinking about putting him on the SCD diet. Is this diet a life long diet or is there hope that after his gut is healed he will be able to return to a somewhat normal diet? Will he be able to eat the legal cheeses after a while? He currently reacts to casein. How long do the stages in the diet last (esp Stages 1, 2 and 3)? Thanks, Marcia

Disorders such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis take much longer with the minimum time of two years on the diet. A rule of thumb is to stay on the diet for at least one year after the last symptom has disappeared. At that time, introduce one forbidden food at a time. It is advisable to add only one food per week, starting with small amounts and increasing the amount as the week progresses...It is hoped that no one who recovers from his or her problem by following the Specific Carbohydrate ever returns to a diet high in refined sugar and refined flours. They are lacking or low in nutrients, will not nourish the immunological system adequately, and can make the individual more susceptible to intestinal infections.... " << Will he be able to> eat the legal cheeses after a while? He currently reacts to casein. >> He may. Many people who were unable to eat cheese and other foods with casein were able to eat them after some healing occurs with the diet. << How long do the stages in the diet last (esp Stages 1, 2 and 3)?>> It depends on his level of " intestinal infection " and how long it takes for him to heal. There is no set answer because everyone is a bit different. Sheila, SCD Feb. 2001, UC 23 yrs mom of and
