Guest guest
Hi, I am new to this list, and have a question. I have a niece recently diagnosed with celiac disease. I have told her mom about the SCD, as we had great success with it with our HFA child. But in looking over this list, I am not easily finding any stories about people who've been able to go from the SCD to a normal diet. This little girl currently has pretty severe diarrhea that seems to be controlled well by taking out gluten and, for now, milk. Her mom thinks it would be very hard to put the girl on the SCD (she's 13), and since I'm not finding stories of people who've been able to return to a normal diet, why bother? She thinks a life of gluten- free would be easier than a life of SCD, especially if gf alone controls the symptoms--and it might. I know Elaine, in her book, considered the SCD to be a couple years of tough diet in order to attain the goal of being able to eat more normally again someday. I am seeing only testimonials from people who have been on the SCD for many, many years, and not from those who have " graduated " to regular foods again. Are there any " cured " celiacs on the list that could help me out here? I understand my sister-in-law's point. Gluten-free is much easier for a 12-yr-old, especially if the SCD's not a short-term diet. Thanks!
Guest guest
Hi , It is nice to have you visit us again! I know of people who no longer need the diet....but they no longer need to follow our discussions so you might not encounter them on this list. I will try to answer more tomorrow. Guest guest
Thank you Mimi. We are still gf/cf, so that isn't much encouragement to my brother and his wife. They have never done any diet intervention, so I know all of this must seem very overwhelming for them. I know they've thought we were very odd with all we've done for our son. Perhaps the biggest reason I want them to try the SCD is that I think my niece has sensory issues that would be helped as well. I'll look for your post! > > Hi, > > I am new to this list, and have a question. I have a niece recently > > diagnosed with celiac disease. Guest guest
Hi , There are many conditions that occur together with celiac. For example, depression and osteoporosis are very common among people with celiac. Gram negative bacteria have been implicated for causing all these conditions. If you do SCD then you are protected from the unfortunate conditions that are associated with celiac. Since GF does not eliminate the bacteria that cause the damage to the villi and other parts of the GI tract, there is the possibility that the condition will get worse and that GF will not work anymore. If you want research studies, then I will provide them. Please send our best regards to your son, Reid. Mimi > Thank you Mimi.
