Guest guest
Hi everybody I'm new to this group although am a member of biomedicalautism group and autismdiet group. is 15 months old and has been doing SCD for around 4 weeks. Before that she was GFCF for around 4 months with huge improvement at the start and then regression. Although her paediatrician was reluctant to give a formal diagnosis (at 10 months) her biomed doctor believes she has mild autism. At the moment I just don't seem to know what I'm doing. My main concern is her weight. I've just had her weighed, measured etc. and she weighs only 7.65kg. She's not even on the chart for children her age. Her length is fine, and her head cirumference too. But since she turned 12 months old she has put on 10 grams!!! I'm so worried about her. Her ribs are showing through, there's barely any muscle on her limbs, she's just so thin. She cannot walk, nor crawl. All she can do is commando crawl and only started doing this at around 12 months old. So far we are not progressing very far with the diet. I THINK carrots are a problem as her BM's were quite orange when we first started the diet - although she WAS having a lot of carrots (she wouldn't eat the chicken or anything else unless there were carrots with it). She didn't have diarrhea or anything, just formed, orange stools. Anyway then we introduced stewed apple - had horrible smelling stools which stunk like rancid apple cider. So i cancelled them out. Then tried bananas - again horrible, horrible stools. Not quite diarrhea but very mushy and acidy with pieces of undigested banana. So i cancelled them out too. Anyway at the moment we've also crossed off zucchini but SEEM to have had success with stewed pears, butternut pumpkin and green beans. The only reason I think these things are working is because we haven't had diarrhea (although BM's can sometimes smell pretty bad still). BUT - my problem is that I'm TERRIBLE at figuring out the other signs and symptoms of a bad reaction to a food. I keep looking for red lips and ears Ear pulling, runny nose etc. etc. But she's had a cold on and off for what seems like the last month and over the last two days she's been in and out of the emergency room with a terrible viral infection!!!!! Her sister has had a similar bout of sicknesses so do I assume this is the diet causing these viruses or is it just " going around " ????????? She's really quite sick at the moment (sore ears, raging fever, vomiting etc.) and its SO hard to guage whether or not she's tolerating a new food!! My other question that I have is in regards to fats and SCD. Because Jess is so underweight I'm really worried that she's never going to learn to crawl/walk if she doesn't develop some muscle mass. I'm at the moment introducing avocado in the hopes this will first be tolerated and then hopefully she can put some weight on. And I've been adding more oil to her meals. Can ANYBODY who has been/still is on SCD with a child so young PLEASE tell me about their experience??? I've already asked this question three or four times to other groups but I just can't seem to get the answers I'm looking for.... I'm sorry this is such an incredibly long post, at the moment I'm pretty stressed and frustrated and worried sick so I really thank anybody who has taken the time to read it all! Also she started Methyl B12 shots around 3 weeks ago and has been on some of the Kirkmans supplements (Super Nu-Thera Liquid 12.5mg P5P, calcium with vitamin D powder and pure cod liver oil). Thankyou in advance, Mum to Jess-ASD
Guest guest
Dear Sara, I wish I knew the answers to your questions but I'm pretty new to the group too. I just wanted to share that my son, at that age, was very underweight also, and the pediatrician was constantly pressuring me to induce him to eat more and sending us to nutritionists. With time, he put on weight and now is a normal height and weight, in fact, a little overweight due to my habit of always overfeeding him. I know it is worrisome, but some kids with autism do seem to have difficulty putting on weight when they are little. I'm hoping that with time and patience, you will start to see some patterns in the food reactions and figure out what to feed her. Guest guest
my son was diagnosed at 14 months old, and in the beginning of the diet he was extremely thin with ribs showing. His low muscle tone all over his body plus his sensory integration problems with his mouth made eating very difficult for both of us. Many, many days the only thing he would/could eat was the goat yogurt blended with his supplements and a little cooked fruit or honey plus acidophilus in the blender. Sometimes I added a raw egg into the blender. He is almost 3 years old now and is about average weight. Eating is still an issue but it's gotten much better. I would say just experiment with the yogurt in the blender. Sometimes I'd even put in some chicken. sometimes a teaspoon of peanut butter or a tiny sliver of avocado. Bone marrow went in there too sometimes and maybe a piece of vegetable. He had a difficult time with cod liver oil so I had to stop it. Maybe I'll try it again in another few months. try not to stress too much if he's not eating solid food. The blended drinks kept my son going for a long time. good luck to you. mom to broderick, asd, scd 20 months. > Hi everybody I'm new to this group although am a member of > biomedicalautism group and autismdiet group. > is 15 months old and has been doing SCD for around 4 weeks. > Before that she was GFCF for around 4 months with huge improvement > at the start and then regression. > Although her paediatrician was reluctant to give a formal diagnosis > (at 10 months) her biomed doctor believes she has mild autism. > At the moment I just don't seem to know what I'm doing. Guest guest
Hello I think you are doing things right. The reason you are not receiving many answers to your last question is that only a few kids are diagnosed early and I think your daughter is very lucky to be in the group. SCD is the appropiate diet for kids in the spectrum so don't worry, I think is just a matter of time and patience... just try to observe her behavior and not only her BMS. SCD is helping her to " clean " her body from all the bad stuff and that's a process that has ups and downs, but at the end she'll be fine.Just go one step at a time. The most important thing to do now is to help her with her infection and once that is under control, you can focus a little more on the food. I see you just started the CLO and I think that's going to help her fight the infection. Since your daughter seems not to have major GI problems (but we never know for sure), maybe you could use a little more fat in her diet, maybe use avocado or more meats... some one else can help you on this one. I hope this helps a little. Guest guest
--- Hi , I'm quite new to SCD too, so I can't answer your questions in that regard. However, if this puts your mind at ease, my daughter at the age of 18 months only weighed 7.12kg. She did not sit up independently until she was 10 months old. She has a rare condition which makes her hypotonic (low muscle tone) and she was very " floppy " . I can remember thinking that she would never walk, and was very anxious. She also has a visual impairment so I worried how that would impact on her wanting to walk when she couldn't see clearly. However, she began walking at 22 months . She still struggles with her weight, but I have stopped worrying so much as one day, as her gut function improves, I am sure this will cease to be an issue. I am sooo glad to have found this group, and I take heart at reading other parents success with SCD. I am hoping things improve for your daughter, and hopefully, a list moderator will get back to you to offer advice and support. I know this is so hard, but try not to worry, you are trying to do the best you can for your daughter, and the people here will support you in any way they can. Guest guest
> > Thankyou to everybody who replied. It has helped to ease my mind a little. At the moment she's not on any probiotics so i would really like to try the goat yoghurt. I gave avocados a whirl over the last two days but we've had pretty restless sleep, grumpy grizzling with a little rash on her neck and total diarrhea. So i assume thats a bad reaction????? I'm VERY disappointed as i was really hoping she'd go okay on these. I'm fairly sure she has a problem with salicylates. Every food i try that contains salicylates doesn't get tolerated. I have started adding olive oil to each meal but olives contain salicylates too so not sure if these will cause a problem.... Is there a better oil thats low in salicylates that she'll tolerate?? She eats so much food already. A basic breakfast consists of 2 scrambled eggs, 50 - 100 grams of chicken (minced or chopped), plus about 1/4 cup of stewed pears with 1 tablespoon of olive oil mixed in. It makes a huge bowl of food which she never has trouble finishing and is on many occasions looking for more. Lunch and Dinner are somewhat the same except no eggs, and i put 1/2 cup of pumpkin in with green beans and some lamb or beef mince (again with olive oil). She's also gotten into the habit of waking around 10:30pm (she goes to bed at 7:30) for another meal. So i feed her at that time too. She doesn't have THAT many or very large BM's considering the amount of food she eats (except in the case of yesterday when she has had a bad reaction to something) so i assume the food she's eating is getting absorbed - but why doesnt she put on weight????? I'm just so confused. Also what is the best yoghurt maker to buy? I'm going to order the pro-gurt pretty soon, they have a yoghurt maker on their website, would this be okay?? Is there a better one to find? I live in Australia.... Thanks again, Hello > I think you are doing things right. Guest guest
I " m just wondering if she's hungry hungry hungry because she needs more legal carbohydrates to balance out all the protein? I think if you don't have enough carbs, you burn the protein for energy. Kids seem to need a lot of carbs. However, I'm no expert, just the mother of two kids. As I mentioned before, my son was very underweight at that age, off the charts, and now is fine, in fact a bit overweight and is the right height. Good luck and hang in there, it will get easier. sarahellerbock <no_reply > wrote: > > Thankyou to everybody who replied. It has helped to ease my mind a little. Good luck and hang in there, it will get easier. > >> << >> She doesn't have THAT many or very large BM's > considering the amount of food she eats (except in the case of > yesterday when she has had a bad reaction to something) so i assume > the food she's eating is getting absorbed - but why doesnt she put > on weight????? I'm just so confused. >> I think makes a good point that she needs to get adequate calories (legal carbs) - it will help with the appetite. Once people start the diet they often have increased appetites for a few reasons: -they don't feel sick anymore and actually get their appetite back -their body is switching from rumen type digestion to actual human digestion -their body is healing (which will burn extra calories) - and the big one we have noticed on the children's list is that they start catching up in growth. Many have reported huge growth spurts. Their body is able to continue normal growth patterns now that it is absorbing nutrients whereas preSCD many have reported their kids were at the lower percentiles for weight and height. It may take a while for her to " stabilize " with the healing process and start putting some of the good food energy into weight gain. This happened to me when I started the diet. I was very underweight and actually lost a little weight when I started the diet. The big differenece was that I didn't feel sick any longer. After a few weeks of " dedicated eating I started to put weight back on. I ate smaller, more frequent meals rather than three large meals. Guest guest
I agree with Sheila that when kids are catching up on missed growth, they need to eat much more than you would expect for their size. (I couldn't get my email program to cut and paste what Sheila wrote.) When my son was underweight, the doctors told me that when he started catching up, he would need to eat as if he was at the higher weight, that is, he would need to eat as many calories as a much larger child. Overall, it seems like a good sign, doesn't it? --------------------------------- Need a vacation? Get great deals to amazing places on Yahoo! Travel. Guest guest
Thankyou and Shiela for your help. It all definately makes sense to me, I'm just now wondering how I'm going to be able to provide more legal carbs? I've already tried her with banana and she didn't seem to tolerate those. Avocados gave her terrible diarrhea and now I fear because of the avocado I'm going to have to go back and start everything over because she's suddenly stopped tolerating her pumpkin and green beans!! Everything seemed fine with those before and now they're coming out undigested..... She has trouble with salicylates I think, everything I try with salicylates doesn't get tolerated. I can keep introducing more and more types of veggies low in salicylates but I don't see how they're going to help put weight on her? I'm very confused. Guest guest
Sheila is the expert, and I am certainly not, but what about honey as an additional carb source? I make a sauce for my son's chicken and beef with honey. (I add ginger and garlic, which he loves, but I'm not recommending that for a little one. It can also be mixed with pureed fruit for a really nice sauce before cooking the meat or chicken.) Could it also be added to other things she can tolerate... eggs? A kind of custard made with whatever she tolerates? What about legal fruit juices diluted with water? Those have carbs too. I should really stay out of this though and see what Sheila says. Good luck with it, sarahellerbock <no_reply > wrote: Thankyou and Shiela for your help. Guest guest
Hello, My son doesn't have a weight problem but he becomes extremely hostile if he gets salicylates. No Fenol didn't work for us. We have been on SCD for 3.5 months now and just this week he has been able to tolerate pecan butter, beets, banana and carrots. For the past 3 months he only could tolerate in terms of BM and behavior acorn squash. We would have acorn squash and chicken, acorn squash and ground meat, I got very creative with acorn squash. Sometimes I would just mash one up and add a raw egg, a little honey and a very, very little cinamon. He loved it. It tastes like pumpkin pie. I also made " cookies " with acorn squash, chicken, homemade mayo and blended it together and placed them just like cookie doe on a cookie sheet and baked for about 30 minutes. I use Canola oil even though it is not recomended. It is legal but not recomended. It is the only oil my son does not have a reaction to. I also made acorn squash muffins...these are interesting. My son was fine eating only acorn squash and a lot of it. I did worry when his feet turned orange:) but that was ok too. I thought I was going to lose my mind with worry about him the first 2 months because he could not eat anything. I have found that fruits still cause him to have D so I have just given up on them until he heals some more. The banana I have just introduced was in some pecan butter muffins so I don't know if he could tolerate it raw. I hope your dear daughter feels better and I can assure you that she will eventually tolerate more foods. Just take it easy and give her a lot of what she can tolerate. I hope this has helped , mother to Benito, 3.5 yo, ASD, SCD since Feb 14, 2007 ] > Thankyou and Shiela for your help. It can be done without lots of fruits but you will probably be feeding her more food and a lot of the same foods. It may seem boring and repetitive but if she doesn't tolerate a food (that's high in calories)it will slow down her healing. If you think she has a problem with salicylates here is a post about legal honey that's low in salicylates: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/pecanbread/message/66482 Sheila, SCD, Feb. 2001, UC 23 yrs mom of and
