My name is Shea,I'm from Raleigh, to answer your questions: 1. Name: Shea 2. Date of surgery: 5/26/2000 3. Pre-op wt: 304 4. Current wt: 234 5. Comments: First, if asked if I'd do it over again, the answer would be yes, a thousand times yes!!! Initially, I had to wait about 6 months for surgery because of insurance, but once I had the surgery I was ready for it! I was a little nervous, but not much. I had the surgery at 1:00pm on Friday 5/26/00 and was discharged on Sunday 5/28. I probably could have gone home on Saturday, but back in May most patients stayed 2-2.5 days. From what I understand now, most check out the very next day. The first 24 hours were 'hazy' for me, I was pretty much 'out of it' and in moderate pain, for which I used my demerol pump to alleviate. I did some walking in the DRH halls to help dispel the gas etc. I was off from work 7 days, and again I could have gone back to work sooner, but didn't want to rush it. I got my prescriptions filled the day I was discharged, although I did not need any of the VIOXX (for pain) once I was home. I stayed on the 'mush' foods, like applesause, yogurt, soups, soups and more soups for about 1 1/2 months. I no longer have cravings any longer for cookies, muffins or anything sweet anymore - this of course is a signifcant life changing experience! I have not had one single diet coke (or any carbonated soda) since the surgery. (I was very happy to break this bad habit). Now being 6 months out, I can pretty much tolerate most foods, except pasta and red meat. I have experienced the 'dumping syndrone' from eating too fast or too much, it usually passes in about an hour or so. I have only vomited twice since surgery....once on cubed steak and another time on 'Hamburger Helper' Chili Macaroni! So beleive me when I say I will not eat meat or anything from the 'Hamburger Helper' stuff! I'd like to say some of the nicest things about having this surgery is as follows: 1. Cravings for cookies, brownies, muffins etc are GONE! 2. The 'Obsessive' thoughts about food are GONE! 3. I feel 'normal' or at least, that this is what it is like for 'normal' people. That they (& now I) can have one piece and only one! Pre-surgery, I felt like a 'switch' would be turned on when I would have a cookie and that 'switch' would stay ON and not shut off until I was totally stuffed! Now, I too can just have one and that's it!! 4. Of course the wonderful benefit of losing the wieght! 5. Another benefit that I was not expecting, was this wonderful group of people who are very supportive of each other! I attend the monthly support group meetings here in Durham, which I find very helpful in so many ways. I've made some very nice friends in this group and for that I am very grateful! 6. And lastly, I can't thank Dr. Rutledge enough for his talents, his kindness, his empathy, his being here to help us!!!! I hope I did't put you to 'sleep' with my wordy response. I hope this information will help you. If there is anything I can help you with do not hesitate to ask. Good luck and god bless! Shea sh@...
