I hope I don't jinx myself, but I wanted to share my excitement that

I'm seeing some changes in my son after two weeks on the diet.

First week was very difficult, he was lethargic, threw up a few

times, very pale, and very spacey. Then he snapped out of it and

he's back to the fun-loving guy that I knew before we started SDC but

also with improvements. His imagination play has increased so much.

Also he said " What's this, Mommy? " He's never said that before. His

eating has improved. Before the diet he ate three things, now he's

eating several new things. I've made a few mistakes along the way

(such as giving him supplements that I didn't know were illegal), and

I've let him have pieces of fruit that I didn't cook.

When I went GF/CF he improved and then his stimming got dramatically

worse. His stimming is back under control. We're still working on

it, but it's not constant like it was becoming when we were eating

tons of rice products.

I also purchased the Band of Mothers book that I reread constantly

while my son was going through the die-off. It's a fantastic book.

So I wanted to thank anyone who responded to my questions. I'm very

happy so far with the results of this diet for my son!

Hi ,

that is so exciting that you are seeing such changes already. We are

about to start our son (ASD, age 3 - very fussy eater!!) on the

diet. We have been trying a few things before we see the doctor next

week and discuss what medications to take him off etc, but have had

enormous difficulty trying to get him to eat anything! He won't eat

eggs, soups, vegetables, meat or chicken pancakes, so I am starting

to worry he won't eat anything when we cut out all the GFCF things

he's been eating. How did you get your son to try the new things?

Our little guy loves the biscuits I made with almond flour, but I

realise they are advanced in the diet and tonight he threw up after

having some today. So I am starting to worry that we may not be able

to do this diet, although I desperately want to, as I can see the

wonderful results others are having. Any suggestions or ideas would

be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Nonni, Mum of (3)ASD, and Finn(1)(all of us hopefully to be

soon SCD)

It is not uncommon for soem of the children to go on a food strike. SCD is

often so different than what their body is used to and even craves because of

the harmful yeast and bacterial overgrowth that is in their gut. Truly, the

best way to switch to SCD is just plain, old fashioned cold turkey. Get rid of

all of the GFCF foods, and go right in to the intro diet for him. If he refuses

the foods, wait it out. Don't be alarmed as long as he is drinking fluids(SCD

legal, of course). The longest I've seen on this group for a hunger strike at

the beginning was nine days. The child finally realized that those other foods

were gone for good, and decided to eat what was offerred. He is doing very well

now.

Hi Nonni. The way I had my son eat different things was introduce things when

he was distracted such was playing on the computer or watching TV. With my son

the more you focus on the food, such as sitting at the table, the more he would

scream and run. So what I did was use strawberries (SCD legal but more advanced

but he loves them) as reinforcement. I told him he could have one strawberry if

he kissed the chicken pancake. Then I progressed to one small bite. Then I

would keep putting it to his mouth for nibbles until one day he just starting

taking bites. The second day of the diet he ate ten chicken pancakes. He

hasn't had chicken in 3 years. Third day he ate eight chicken pancakes. Fourth

day he threw up and didn't eat much. But we kept going and by the 8th day he

was feeling much better. He only had SCD foods. If I let him have any of his

GF/CF foods he would have never tried a new thing. I'm not an expert by any

means, but we're in our second week and

he's starting to enjoy the diet.

My goal in the beginning was to just give SCD legal foods, even if they were a

little more advanced, and get him to enjoy the foods so I know he would eat, and

then start the intro diet and progress from there. So he's eating advanced

foods as of today, and we're going to continue this way for a month or so, and

then go for it hard-core after that.

Before the diet he was eating American processed cheese, Jamba Juice (a sugary

drink), GF muffins. Now he's eating chicken pancakes, boiled turkey burgers,

cheddar cheese (I cook grated cheese in the oven and it makes it crispy, a

texture he loves) smoothies (made with strawberries, bananas, goat yogurt, fresh

oranges), avocado (still nibbles), pears, carrots, bananas. Today I'm going to

attemp avocado meatloaf and chicken cupcakes.

Good luck. You just have to wait them out and they'll come around.
