Guest guest
I am posting an email from another SCD list. Please pay special attention to the dental cleaning part . Mimi There are some things to watch for: 1) Are you introducing certain foods too quickly? At Laurie Mawlam's suggestion we followed the chart found here: http://pecanbread.com/new/scdfoods1.html (scroll down until you find stage 1, stage 2, stage 3, etc.) Take your time moving from stage to stage. Also -- the SCD 24 hr yogurt is very important. 2) Do some SCD-friendly foods cause you problems? Just because it is allowed doesn't mean you can tolerate it. In my husband's case, bananas are a no-no. So is peanut butter and, we have just discovered -- too much carbonated water is not good. We are constantly learning as we go. 3) Are you sure there are no " hidden " illegals in your diet? It took us a year to eliminate certain fruit juices, spice mixtures, diet pop, mustard, etc. that all had hidden illegals in them. 4) Dental visits can be a trigger for flares!!! My husband has had four major flare ups (while on the SCD). All have happened within a week of him having his teeth cleaned. This January, he skipped his cleaning and as a result - no flare up! It is the first time in five years that he has been free of a major flare up. 5) Is your diet varied enough? Sometimes it is easy to get into a rut and start eating the same things day after day. This can be problematic as your body is not getting all the nutrition it needs. Be sure to change up your veggies and meats. For those who are not meat eaters, avocadoes are nice and fatty (high calorie). Also, the Farmer Cheese is fantastic and can be added to cooked veggies and blended for delicious soups. This is the advice Elaine gave us before she passed away: 1) If you do the SCD, do it completely. Do not stray, no matter what. 2) If you experience success on the SCD (less cramping, reduction in D, etc.) during the first few weeks, then it will work for you. You just need to be patient. 3) Expect setbacks during the healing process. Healing takes time. Do not be discouraged. 4) If you eat foods that aggravate - then do not eat them. (For my husband, we have discovered this means raw/cooked bananas, apple peel and raw peanut butter - all of which cause cramping.) 5) If you require medical intervention, then take it. It takes a long time for your body to heal - if in the meanwhile you need medical help, then don't deny yourself the help. 5) Sometimes you will require heavier forms of medication (ie: prednisone) to pull you out of a flare. 6) Don't throw away your medication until you are well on the way to healing. 7) Have patience. It will get better.
