Guest guest
The CCFA is changing the SCD info on their website and removing the designation of SCD as a LOW CALORIE diet. However they won't budge on saying it is LOW CARBOHYDRATE, which is untrue. I have continued to protest and sent a typical daily menu of mine which contained over 100 grams of carbohydrates. If anyone else is tracking their nutrients and can post or email me examples of including reasonable amounts of SCD legal carbs, I would appreciate it. They have no right to discredit SCD by misrepresent it. I hope you are all coming along well with your children and having success on the ASD version of SCD! Carol F. Guest guest
Can someone post what constitutes a low carb diet in the first place? Is it based on percentages or overall grams/day? I have no idea if we are eating low carb or normal carb. I watched an interview with Dr. Adkins before he died and the meal he ate on camera looked plenty like what we are serving (meat and non-starch vegetables). I have always been confused by this. Sure you could make it a high carb diet if you are up to nuts & beans, but many us aren't there. My kid is off fruit right now as he does better without it, so is he " low carb? Guest guest
In our SCD family, we normally each consume about 100-125 carbs per day. We try and do 20-30 at each meal and around 10-15 at each snack (2-3 snacks per day). Of course for most Americans, who typically eat tons of bread, pasta, processed products with sugar, and drink pop, juice etc etc. 100 carbs a day is probably considered LOW to them. My husband who does not eat SCD with us most of the time (he is addicted to fast food) probably eats two or maybe even three times the amount of carbs that we do. I do not believe the SCD is low carb. I think it can easily provide an optimum amount of carbs. Rather, I think the typical american diet is HIGH carb. Excessively HIGH carb. When people say that I eat low carb these days, I always say, " no, I eat moderate carbs, I just don't go overboard, and I only eat specific carbs " . Here is an example of what one day's meals looks like for us: Breakfast: eggs and grapefruit and/or melon Snack: yogurt and some type of fruit Lunch: Turkey burgers (made with spinach and onions), winter squash, and a salad Snack: yogurt and some type of fruit Dinner: Pork chops, green beans, zucchini, carrots (cooked with honey and butter), and salad or steamed greens Snack: yogurt and some type of fruit I also add in plenty of healthy fats, cook things in lard, coconut oil, and/or olive oil, plenty of cultured butter on veggies, etc, homemade mayo, etc etc. > > The CCFA is changing the SCD info on their website and removing the > designation of SCD as a LOW CALORIE diet. Guest guest
According to the website About.com, the usual " mainstream " recommendation is a diet with 50-65% calories from carbohydrates, and a diet with 40% or less energy from carbs can be considered a " low-carb diet. " I, too, am in the beginnging phases of the SCD and cannot use beans (nuts are fats, so would not add carbs), so for carbohydrates I use fruits, winter squash and green peas. Note that honey and juice also provide carbohydrates, so you do not need to be at the advaced stages of the SCD to get carbs. I use a meal planning program through my health club to make sure I get the proper ratios of fat/prot/starch (carb). A typical day for me woul dbe the following: B - 2 eggs, 1 cup yogurt, 2 cups butternut squash, 1/2 banana, 1/4 cup coconut milk (this is a fat I put in coffee) L - 3 oz chicken, 1 cup green peas, 5 oz carrots, tbspn olive oil, baked pealed apple Snack - Bag of apple chips (from Digestive Wellness) D - 3 oz salmon, 1 cup green peas, 1 cup cooked spinach, tbspn olive oil, baked pealed pear S - 1 cup yogurt, 3/4 cup blueberries This comes out to about 60% carbohydrates, 25% protein and15% fat. Hope that helps! > The CCFA is changing the SCD info on their website and removing the > designation of SCD as a LOW CALORIE diet. Guest guest
Thanks for laying it all out for me. I will have the dietician do the same for my son since we are seeing her next week anyway to make sure we aren't too high protein. - amindyt wrote: According to the website About.com, the usual " mainstream " recommendation is a diet with 50-65% calories from carbohydrates, and a diet with 40% or less energy from carbs can be considered a " low-carb diet. A true low carb diet like Atkins ( weight loss, not healing) allows very few on induction and limits carbs after but does allow more. I think we go through periods of craving where we will want more protein and others when we crave sweets and SCD legals that remind us of restricted foods. An example would be when people moderate fruit and honey at the beginning or in a yeast flare. In any case I am getting so few responses to my request for feedback on carbs in peoples' diets that I won't have enough ammunition to challenge that CCFA article by Debra Gordon. Carol F. Guest guest
Carol, I hope Anya's diet suits you. She is 4.5 y.o. though. but she practically eats what the rest of us eat; we are all on the diet although we cheat when she is not around. Breakfast: banana pancakes (1 egg, 1 banana and approx. 50 mg. DCCC), 125 ml. home made diluted grape juice, 1/2 a cup SCD yogurt with honey. Snack: we send raisins, yougurt, raw baby carrots and a fruit, half a banana or one cooked peach, and home made diluted grape juice Lunch: Usually left-overs from dinner. Beef, fish, pork, or chicken with cooked green beans, mushrooms, spinach, bell peppers, eggplant or chayote; half a banana, or apple sauce or pear sauce or a cooked peach, cheese cake, or pumpkin pie, or blueberry muffin and home made diluted apple or grape juice. Snack: Either Haverti or mild Cheddar slices with chicken liver paté, sometimes cheese cake and yougurt Dinner: Vegetable soup made with homemade chicken broth and when the recipe calls for cream we blend Farmers cheese, we usually alternate clear soup, and creamed soup. Either beef, pork, chicken or fish (usually one day meat the next fish), with a cooked vegetable or raw avocado, either cheese bread or almond bread with Gruyere, Haverti, or Cheddar, sometimes she likes a little Brie, and she usually prefers cheese cake, or zucchini or blueberry muffins to fruit. Home made diluted apple or grape juice Before going to bed she has one cup of a smoothy made with yougurt, banana and honey. Araceli, Anya's grandmother Anya 4.5 y.o. Guest guest
> > Carol, I hope Anya's diet suits you. Thank you. Anya's diet looks very nutritious and sppetizing. What I need to know for purposes of asking CCFA to remove the Low Carb description of SCD is to know how many grams of carbohydrate or what percentage of the daily diet is carbohydrate. One way to find out is to open a free acount at www.fitday.com and enter in the foods being eaten and the amounts. I do hope all is going well for newbies and oldies on Pecanbread. Carol F. Guest guest
Carol, sorry I tried fitday but you have to be 13 at least and Anya is only 4. I tried it with what I eat, but their options do not include home made simple things. Sorry and regards. Araceli > > > > > > > > > > > Carol, I hope Anya's diet suits you. > > Thank you. I would think you can open the account under your name and give your statistics but enter Anya's food intake to get the results. Don't worry. I have had only a few responses and will either use what little I have or drop it. it would be nice if the CCFA rescinded their label of Low Carb in regard to SCD. The Fitday membership may prove useful. You can journal in it and track Anya's food intake and reactions though. Carol F. Guest guest
Hi Carol, I have a fitday account and am on SCD. The thing is, I don't know what would be considered low carb. How many grams of carb a day is considered low? Mine may be, because I am on phase 2 going on 3 of the diet. You are welcome to use it if it helps: ) SCD 4 months, eczema, food allergies -- Re: CCFA, SCD and Low Carb Designation > > Carol, sorry I tried fitday but you have to be 13 at least and Anya is > only 4.
