Guest guest
to professionals, parents, grandparents - any interested parties - from our national LDAA office Toxic Baby Bottle Report to be featured on Today Show and Good Morning America on Thursday, February 7th NBC's Today Show and ABC's Good Morning America are expected to run stories on Thursday morning, February 7, on a new study showing that the toxic chemical Bisphenol A leaches from major brand baby bottles when heated, or when hot liquids are poured into the bottles. The study tested major brands Avent, Dr. Brown's, Evenflo and The First Year's Disney character bottle. The bottles were purchased from Target, Walgreens, Wal-Mart and CVS stores across the country. Bisphenol A (BPA) is a toxic chemical found in hard, polycarbonate plastics. BPA mimics estrogen in the body and disrupts the human hormonal system. In animal studies, BPA shows adverse health effects related to breast and prostate cancer, thyroid disease, early puberty in girls, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, diabetes and obesity. These effects in animals occur even at very low doses of Bisphenol A. BPA exposure is widespread and has been found in 95% of Americans tested, at levels that are within the range that is linked to serious health effects in animals. BPA is also used in food can linings, Nalgene bottles, the linings of baby formula cans and other products. It has been a year since a similar study release by Environment California showed BPA leaching from baby bottles. A coalition of environmental and public health organizations that includes LDA is calling for an immediate moratorium on the use of BPA in baby bottles. For more information, see the next issue of Newsbriefs for an article on Bisphenol A and LDA's role in opposing its use.
