HELP LD CHILDREN SET GOALS

Learn how to help children with learning disabilities set and

reach goals. " Goal Setting for Children with Learning

Disabilities " -- an exclusive new LD OnLine article -- tells you

how to help them overcome the difficulties caused by their

disability. If they learn how to turn their dreams and passions

into specific, measurable, achievable, and realistic steps, they

will have an important tool to build a successful life. Here are

some tips to help them harness their inner hero:

+ ask them about their dreams and desires

+ encourage them to set self-directed goals related to their

dreams. Their dreams will provide the fuel they need to overcome

obstacles

+ link their schoolwork, particularly the tasks they dislike, to

the goals they choose

+ help them figure out how to work around their disabilities

+ teach and model the perseverance they will need to handle the

invisible challenge of their disability

+ praise their work process as well as the product

+ when they succeed, ask " How did you do it? "
