Guest guest
Our family will be visiting Toronto June 11-17. I'm the only one SCD, the three kids are just gluten-free. We're planning on visiting Canada's Wonderland for two days and the CN Tower, Casa Loma... Are there any SCD stores I should visit while there to stock up on supplies like almond butter, yogurt starter... Thanks. BTW, when I e-mailed Canada's Wonderland to ask which items in their eating establishments were gluten-free, the reply was that unfortunately, none of them were! I wrote back asking them to dig a little deeper :-) Theresa (in Vancouver, Canada) IBS whole life, SCD 2 years
Guest guest
I emailed Canada's Wonderland Last summer and they didn't even respond to my email. My hubby(gluten-free) and son(SCD) ended up just bringing a back pack full of food. > > Our family will be visiting Toronto June 11-17. I'm the only one SCD, the three kids are > just gluten-free. Guest guest
Thanks, we will probably end up bringing mostly our own food. But I'm going to follow up, because saying " nothing here is gluten-free " just sounds like a CYA kind of thing, and not helpful, and I think the more of us who make a fuss and speak up that our needs are not being met, the more people in service industries will sit up and take notice. Guest guest
Theresa, We go to Canada's Wonderland every year and bring a cooler full of food and eat in the parking lot when its lunch time. The food is exhorbitantly expensive there and oh so bad for you. Toronto has lots of places to buy food and some of our own sell their stuff in stores. Go to www.jgourmet.ca They have baked goods for sale in grocery stores around the city. A good Health Food Store is where you can buy almond butter etc or even the organic/Healthfood section of Zehrs or Fortinos. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Theresa, The Big Carrot Natural Food Market in Toronto will have lots of gluten free foods and supplies for SCD, I buy goat milk, DCCC etc. there. Here is the link to their website, http://www.thebigcarrot.ca . Also there is a WholeFoods market downtown, which likely has lots to choose from. Loblaws stores carry many items like almond butters and organics etc.... I can't advise on Wonderland, not having been there since my teenage years but wouldn't count on getting anything healthy there. Il Fornello is an Italien restaurant which offers gluten free pizzas and good food in general. We have gone out there to dinner. Our SCDer had chicken breast stuffed with Asiago cheese and spinach and substituted the mashed potatoes with other vegetables of our choice. There are several Il Fornello restaurants in the city, I am not sure if they all have the same menu, our location is in the Pape/Danforth area, which by the way has many Greek and other other restaurants (Greektown), at Greek restaurant you can easily order a grilled pork or chicken souvlaki with plain salad. I wish I could give you more recommendations for restaurants but we don't go out that often, and when we do it is in our neighbourhood. Enjoy your stay and good luck! - daughter 8, scd 4yrs

They have fresh nuts, good nut butters and sliced roast beef with nothing added. They have nice small containers of fresh fruit. They have cooked shrimp, and sugar freenaturally smoked salmon (Nanuk) with no liquid smoke added. They have an incredible array of legal cheeses. While you shop have a cup of their organic lighter blend of coffee diluted with some water. There is honey at the coffee bar too. They have all the Frontierseasonings and vanilla and wonderful dried fruits with no added sugar. Loblaws has goat's milk, plain Astro yogurt, DCCC, properly aged cheeses by the slice, legal President's Choice prosciutto, organic fruits and vegetables, legal juices such as " Just Juice " and Kedem Organic Grape, portable small bottles of Tropicana O.J., sugar free bacon which you can microwave and carry. Loblaw's has the Nanuk fozen smoked salmon too in small packages. Roll it up in cheese slices and take it to Wonderland. (I am allergic to something in the air at the Big Carrot ) Carol F. Guest guest
OMG and Carol. Makes me feel like I want to move to Toronto (dh would be happy, he spent part of his childhood there). I'm hoping to compile as comprehensive a list of SCD supplies and outlets for here in Vancouver, as I'm running a local support group. I think we'll pick up our groceries, bring a cooler and enjoy our own, healthy food, rather than rely on over-priced Wonderland food. BTW, it wasn't me who didn't hear back. I did hear back, with a curt " nothing at Wonderland is gluten-free " which I quickly shot back with something along the lines of " you've got to be joking " . If anyone has any other suggestions for " secret " places to visit in Toronto for a family with a 12yo girl, 10yo boy and 5yo girl, feel free to e-mail me privately so as not to plug up the list. We're there June 11-16, staying at the Delta Chelsea downtown. Other than Wonderland, we're planning the CN Tower and the Science Centre, and dh's old stomping grounds in Scarborough. Thanks.
