Guest guest
Hi Marjorie ! I would love to be a contact for you !! Here is my story... I had my surgery on September 13, 2000 at Durham Regional Hospital. I arrived at the hospital at 7am and was on the operating table by 8:30am. The staff was absolutely WONDERFUL. My surgery took all of 27 min and I had absolutely NO complications during the surgery. I was taken to recovery until I woke up and then brought to my room. I do not remember any of this. I remember waking up and being EXTREMLY thirsty. The nurse allowed my husband to give me small sips of gatorade and ice chips. I immediately began dry heaving. This lasted for about 15 min until I heaved one last time and some blood came out of my mouth. My husband turned as white as a ghost, however , but as gross as it sounds, it felt good ..because dry heaving is the worst feeling...its very unproductive. About 4 nurses came running to my room as my husband would not release the nurses' call button and they immediately realized that I had knocked my IV line out..they had put it in my left wrist and when I sleep I curl my hands in and this knocked it out...so I was not getting any fluids...they put the new IV in so fast I still dont even remember seeing them do it...and I was watching them. Once the new IV was in ..I IMMEDIATELY stopped heaving and the only discomfort I felt was the muscles in my belly from lifting my body up to heave. The nurse explained that it was old blood from the surgery that must have gotten in the new stomach and your organs dont like old blood, so your body will try to get rid of it...one way or the other. I know it sounds gross..but I figure you want to know good and bad...well that ...as small as it was...was as worse as it got ! I began walking about two hours after surgery and the more I walked the better I felt. I had very little discomfort from the gas and went home at 10am the next day. We stayed for a week 9/10 to 9/17 and I couldnt wait to get back to Florida. I have a 5 year old little girl and this was the first time I was away from her longer than a weekend. The first couple of days were a bit icky feeling but I realized that the cause of this ..for me...was the scope patch. We are required to have it prior to surgery and keep it on for a couple of days ... it was the patch that was making me nauses. As soon as I took it off, I felt soo much better. Its funny but it seemed like the first 4 weeks went by sooooo slow, I guess because for the first 2 weeks you're on liquids, and then a week or so of mushy foods. I was ready to eat. Prior to surgery I said...ohhh i'm gonna stay on liquids for two months ! Ha ! no way...I just made the two weeks ! The first week of solid foods was a bit hard because I had a very hard time knowing when I was full, and I just COULD NOT believe that eating 1/4 of a sandwich filled me up ! So I had a few days of pain when I would over eat. But then one day it was like a light went on...and it just clicked ...I could tell when I was getting full. A typical day of eating for me is ....get up in the am take a vitamin, take an Actigal, take a Fish oil pill and eat breakfast ..for me I sometimes have chex corn cereal, with 2% milk, sometimes I have a dropped egg on toast, sometimes I have a blueberry waffle. For lunch I take a vitamin and I eat 1/2 of a ham and cheese sandwich. For dinner I take a vitamin, Actigal, and Fish oil Pill. I have tried just about everything...mexican, chinese, fish, meat, chicken, pork etc last night I had a very thin cut pork chop...shake n' baked, with green beans and mashed potatoes. I drink mostly water or crystal light. They have a great Peach Passion and Raspberry Tea thats sugar free. I also like unsweetened Iced-Tea, or lemonade that is watered down. I have tried a sip of coke, sprite and ginger ale and they all disgust me ! And I was a 2 liter of Pepsi per day kinda gal ~smile~ . Now I am absolutely loving it ! I would do this again in a heartbeat ! The freedom from my addiction to food is something I just could never put in words... Even if I stayed the weight i'm at right now... the freedom to not be addicted to food, not think about food the very second I wake up until the very second I go to bed, is more than I could have ever hoped for. " Hope " is what you will find with this surgery and probably is the closest to explaining how good it feels. I haven't had hope for a very very long time...if ever I did. I am a 30 year old married woman with one child ...she's 5, and I have been overweight all of my life...I have no idea what it is like to be thin...to be healthy, but I am sooo looking forward to it. I feel like I have been given a second chance and this time...I cant fail. My weight going into surgery was 309lbs. I am 5'1 and had a BMI of 58%, now it has been 2.5 months since my surgery and I now weigh 252lbs (loss of 57lbs) and my BMI is 47% (loss of 11%) I have also lost over 33 inches all over my body. My official measuring is every 30 days, so on 11/13 I had lost 33.25 inches all over... I have lost over 6 inches on my waist and 6 inches on my hips alone ! Prior to surgery I suffered terribly from acid reflux and constant stomach irritations, I now have NO acid reflux or stomach discomfort. I was also on a blood pressure medicine for not only high blood pressure but for the horribly disfiguring swelling I suffered from, I no longer take that med since the surgery and have NO swelling at all...not even during that time of the month. My menstrual cycle is even better. I have always been very regular, however I had very bad headaches two days prior and on the day of my period that taking meds for never helped. Now, I will get a very slight headache around 6pm the day before until I go to sleep at night but its nothing like before and is tolerable. I have no headache when my period starts the next morning. I have no cramps and very slight lower back pain ...it lasts only a few hours on the day of...rather than for the entire week before and many days after. I have just moved from the central east coast of Florida to Orlando, about 5 weeks ago, and I am currently not working. This could have been a disadvantage to me, however when I went thru the 3rd and 4th week of not losing any weight (this happens due to your fat breaking down and liquifying...it happens to everyone) when the 5th week came and I was only loosing a pound or two, I knew it was due to my lack of moving...so I began exercising. I workout in my home to a Powter video tape for 45 min and then do an 8 min Tae Bo workout, then I walk one mile in the late afternoon. I do this every day...I was losing a pound a day but since the last two weeks, my weight loss has slowed down to about 3 lbs a week...which is still very very good. I was worried about this, however, I feel if I were working and moving around doing normal business stuff I would probably still be losing without having to exercise. I am very very afraid of saggin skin, so I feel that exercise is something that I HAVE to do. and its something that even thin and healthy people should be doing..so I have started now ...and am very strict with it. I wish you much success in your quest for what is right for you, and if this is what you have chosen for you, then I truly truly hope that you have a wonderful and safe journey to the " other side " . I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. If EVER you need any help, or have any questions...I would be honored to help ! You can also call any time you like .
