Guest guest
Dear Group, My name is Liana and I've been suffering from Pancreatitis since 1999. I'm 25 years old now and pregnant with my 3rd. With this pregnancy I've experienced a lot of pain (feels like pancreatic pain) and nausea. Yesterday I couldn't take it anymore so I went to the ER.....the enzymes came back normal!! I couldn't believe it. I'm not lying about my pain! It s so frustrating because it seems like the enzymes don't go up unless I have a big attack. I wish there was some little devise (like diabetics have) to check the amylase and lipase at home! I've had flare up pains every day since last Saturday. They last about 3-4 hours (that's with taking Demerol) I'm trying to tolerate the pain since I'm pregnant and don't want to take too much pain meds. I'm happy that my new GI (Dr. Mamel) is very knowledgeable. I see him again on the 29th of this month. He said at my last visit that the only thing he could do (now that I'm pregnant) is an MRCP to look at the ducts and maybe an ERCP to open the pancreatic duct a little more. We'll see. I just hate feeling like this....especially with the pregnancy. I'm constantly worrying about the baby! Anyway, thanks for listening! I know it's been a while since I posted....sorry. Guest guest
Dear Liana, I see a professor who is a pacreatic specialist and he told me my enzymes don't have to be up to have an attack. My doctor has hospitalized for pain management even though my enzymes were okay. You may want to mention this to your doctor. Guest guest
Hi Liana, I am sorry to hear about your discomfort and especially that you're pregnant and having to take pain meds ontop of it. of course it's normal to feel worried about your baby. whether you have an illness or not. but even more so with a disease. Are you considered a high risk pregnancy? I would think that you are and that the dr is being extra careful to evaluate the growth of the baby and especially your health even more so at this time. I was just diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis and didn't even know I had it. jsut a few weeks ago. I gave an introduction of myself a few mintues ago. explaining from beginning till now. I remember reading in the research I've read, that by the time a person reaches the stage of chronic panreatitis, that your enzyme levels won't be high when you have an attack. Only in the earlier stages of acute pancreatitis would the amylase levels be elevated, not in chronic. because the pancreas is damaged at that point. So you can be in terrible pain and nausea and still have normal levels of amylase. pretty frightening, huh? do you also have maladsorption caused by the pancreatitis? they say that by the time malabsorption strikes that 80 to 90% of the pancreas is already damaged by the time that sets in. I never heard of steatorrhea until a few weeks ago. that's what maladsorption is called. forgive my spelling ability. When did they start giving you pain meds? just recently? or have you been on them for years? My neice was born with a malformed pancreas and when she came to new york to visit with us from massachusets, I remember seeing her in pain all the time. No one knew what was wrong, including her mother. they finally found out after doing surgery that the pancreas was deformed. they put her on heavy duty medication, big bottles of morphine. which looked like cough syrup bottles. she became addicted to the medicine and had to go in pt. to learn how to come off it. most patients do. i heard that this is very common. it's almost impossible to not become addicted to the pain meds. but it's a much needed medicine. the withdrawal from it can be dealth with in a later time. I wish you well and I hope the doctors are able to help you. sincerely,
