Guest guest
I'm getting ready to start the SCD for my family mainly to benefit my son who has autism and constant constipation. I'm afraid to just jump into the diet cold turkey. IS it ok to slowly introduce the diet or is it better to just jump right in? I'm afraid he'll have more behaviors because he is motivated by all his foods that he'll no longer be able to eat. Thanks for your help. 4 years old autism (getting ready to start diet)
Guest guest
, Welcome to the list. My personal opinion and experience is that it is better to just jump in cold turkey. Some families like to gradually phase out foods, but I thought that it was best just to tell iel that those foods weren't good for his body. He was three when we started SCD, but I don't really know if he understood what I was saying because he seemed to be in his own little world. I told him anyway, and just got rid of everything. He did continually ask for his old foods, but I just told him that it was all gone. He would sometimes get upset, but he is now used to SCD. We've been SCD for 13 months, and he is doing really well now. He will still ask for things that others are eating, but I just tell him that he can't have it because it makes him sick. He's OK with that now, and I try to provide something in its place when I can. Hope this is helpful. Guest guest
I'm getting ready to start the SCD for my family Hi , I also think it is better to jump into the diet cold turkey. When they are this young, (Anya is 4.5 y.o. but started the diet at 3.5 y.o.) they eat what you give them and they are not too curious about what they are eating, or at least that was our case. We threw away all illegals, and we all ate the intro diet two days, and started adding new things little by little. She was doing what she was used to do, eating all together the same things, so it was not a problem. When someone gives her a lollypop or candy she is very good at it, she says: " No thank you, that gives me a tummy ache " . Anya's grandma Araceli UC Dec 2005 Diagnosed June 2006 SCD 2006 Meds. Guest guest
We did it gradually. First we reduced, then eliminated grains (1 month). Then to help make the transition, we first got him used to store-bought versions of things we'd soon be making by scratch (applesauce for example). My rationale was that I knew he hated applesauce & would refuse it initially, so I didn't want to bother making it from scratch just to have it go down the sink. This really helped my son (& me). Once he adjusted to the new food choices (1 more month), we officially started. I figured if one day I woke up and every single food that was served on my plate was completely different, I wouldn't like it very much, so why should I do that to him? - nicolecollins428 wrote: I'm getting ready to start the SCD for my family mainly to benefit my son who has autism and constant constipation.
