Just recently, I ran across an article that discussed the explanation of anit-

yeast therapy (Nystatin) and autism. I have 2 boys with autism and they are

currently seeing a MD who also practices DAN protocol. He couldn't talk

highly enough about Nystatin and the results he as seen in the kids he has

given it to. Then I ran across this article and it made some valid points, some

of which I had not considered, like high doses of vitamins/minerals (like we

are giving our kids) can counteract the Nystatin, and that there is mold in corn

which can cause bacteria which yeast feeds and the chickens eat this corn

and also cottonseed oil which also tends to have mold. This article

recommends removing chicken and corn from the diet. It also talks about

acidophilus and how this can actually encourage yeast to grow. I'm down to

grass-fed beef. They also eat beans. My two boys started out with terrible

bowel problems and have been normal (except constipation in the little one

from refusing to go because he is scared) for the last 8 months. Because of

this I don't cook their fruit and they seem to tolerate any veggie or fruit now.

I noticed major behavior problems when they started Nystatin due to die-off

of the yeast, but after a week or so their behaviors lessened dramatically. If

I

follow the article's advice, I am supposed to see even greater improvement

I appreciate any of your thoughts regarding the following article. This is such

a complicated disease! As far as I understand, I need to stop high doses of

vitamins and minerals, eliminate corn and chicken out of the diet, stop the

acidophilus, stop vinegar and ketchup and pickles, and eliminate anything

with malt (which I already have).

Explanation of anti-yeast therapy and autism

                                                                                \

Autistic disorder is a severe developmental disorder, which was first

described around 1940, about three years after the introduction of the first

major commercial antibiotics, the sulfa drugs. As antibiotic usage grows, so

do rates of autism. Autistic disorder is a disorder of the antibiotic era. Why?

Because antibiotics help the yeast Candida albicans grow in the intestinal

tract. Candida albicans makes toxic chemicals which hurt the developing

brain.

The yeast Candida albicans can be found inside of our intestinal tract, mouth

and in the female genital tract. Sometimes this yeast overgrows and the

doctor recognizes this overgrowth of yeast as a yeast infection of the female

genital tract or in the mouth, where this infection is commonly called thrush.

Bacteria are also resident inside the intestinal tract, sharing space with the

yeast. Antibiotics kill bacteria, not yeast. After the use of antibiotics the

yeast

grow to fill in the space left by the removal of the bacteria. Yeast make

chemicals which kill bacteria, which enables the yeast to grow at a higher

level, even after the antibiotics have been stopped.

Yeast make a number of chemical compounds which are then picked up and

absorbed into the body. These compounds are quite toxic to the nervous

system. These compounds include toxic alcohols and acetone, as well as the

powerful nervous system poison hydrogen sulfide. Alcohols depress and slow

the nervous system and acetone causes coma. These chemicals slow the

brain down so that the brain no longer works correctly. These chemicals

should be cleared by the liver so that these chemicals never reach the brain.

However in some people, these chemicals are apparently not cleared, reach

the brain, and cause mental symptoms.

Slowing of the brain, especially in speech areas has been found in brains of

autistic children. Alcohols are well known to disrupt brain development.

There are also chemicals in the diet which slow the brain down. Barley malt,

the raw material for making beer, contains twenty chemicals which slow the

brain down. Vinegar also contains such chemicals.

The combination of chemicals from internal yeast and from food could

partially account for the finding of the brain slowing in autistic children.

The important reason to look at yeast as a major contributor to autism

causation is that yeast is easily and safely treatable.

The way to reverse this yeast problem is to take the anti-yeast drug nystatin.

This drug is not absorbed and kills the yeast living in the intestinal tract.

Then

the yeast can no longer make the toxic chemical compounds. Second, the diet

contains many foods which contain yeast compounds. Some of these yeast

chemicals are toxic to bacteria and will clear space for the yeast to grow

again. If these yeast chemicals are left in the diet, nystatin will not do much

good because the yeast keeps growing back. To treat yeast these foods must

be removed from the diet. Removal of these dietary yeast products enables

nystatin to kill the yeast without the yeast growing back. Malt contains chains

of sugar molecules which most likely inhibit the body's immune system. This

inhibition makes it hard for the immune system to fight Candida. Malt must be

removed to clear Candida.

Fortunately, because nystatin is not absorbed, nystatin causes no side effects

except for a little nausea. Therefore there is no risk to this therapy.

The diet for Candida problems consists of removing fermented foods from the

diet. The worst offenders are alcoholic beverages and non-alcoholic beer,

vinegar, barley malt, chocolate, pickles, soy sauce and aged cheese. This diet

is described in the book Feast Without Yeast .

Every child I have seen who has followed this anti-yeast therapy has

improved. Children who can speak always speak better and more. Children

under two and a half who can talk a little can be brought back to normal or

near normal. Behavior and sleep all improve. Children are calmer and easier

to teach.

Where does the gluten free casein free diet fit in? This diet comes from

research on schizophrenia, in which these gluten and casein protein

fragments were found in the urine of schizophrenic patients. Similar urine

profiles were later found in the urine of autistic children.

The role of opioids in autism is as follows. Milk and dairy contain a protein

called casein and wheat contains a protein called gluten. Inside of both

casein and gluten are structures which are difficult for the body to digest

completely. The structures or peptides remaining after digestion of casein and

gluten react at certain sites in the brain called opioid receptors. These sites

are so named because these sites are where opiate drugs such as morphine

act. The internal chemicals which react at the opioid receptors in the brain are

called endorphins. These peptide structures from the diet have several

names, one of which is " opioids " .

In experimental studies, opiate drugs such as morphine have been found to

bind to brain opioid receptors and this binding leads to decreased glucose

(sugar) utilization and decreased metabolic rate. In other words structures

which bind to opioid receptors in the brain slow the brain down. As already

noted, the one finding that stands up in the brains of autistic children is that

the brain is slowed down (metabolically less active) as shown by decreased

blood flow, especially in speech areas.

Presumably these casein and gluten protein fragments also slow the brain

down. This has led to the treatment of excluding casein and gluten from the

diet of autistic children. There are many commercial products available to

support such treatment.

How good is the gluten free casein free diet? The main studies show that

children do better in school. In my experience some children improve, some

only modestly and some barely at all. Why? The gluten free casein free diet is

not an anti yeast diet. The gluten free casein free diet allows some major

yeast offenders such as vinegar, pickles, chocolate, peanut butter and corn.

Both peanuts and corn are often contaminated with mold. Chicken are fed

much cottonseed and cottonseed is contaminated with mold.

So if a child is taken off gluten and casein but is continued on vinegar and is

put on more chicken, peanut butter and corn, what will happen? Whatever

benefits there are from removing gluten and casein will be taken away by

adding to the diet more mold in the form of chicken, peanut butter and corn.

The intestinal yeast will still be there making toxic chemicals. The child will

show only minimal improvement and the improvement and behavior will

fluctuate, depending on what the child has eaten.

This gluten free casein free diet is often recommended today as the main

thing to do for autistic children. However, I recommend the gluten free/casein

free diet only after the anti-yeast diet has been started. The gluten free

casein

free diet allows eating of vinegar, pickles, and other foods containing toxic

yeast chemicals which are quite toxic to the brains of autistic children. Except

for elimination of malt, there is no overlap between foods eliminated on a

gluten free/casein free diet and foods eliminated on Stage 1 of the anti-yeast

diet (as described in Feast Without Yeast ). Malt (which is actually a specially

sprouted barley product) should be eliminated on a gluten free/ casein free

diet and malt is the number 1 item to eliminate on an anti-yeast diet. However,

too many other foods containing toxic chemicals can be left in on a gluten

free/casein free diet, to use this diet as the only therapy.

What about high doses of vitamins and minerals? Vitamin B-6 neutralizes one

of the yeast chemicals and this yeast chemical takes the place of magnesium

at important sites in the body. The neutralization of this chemical may explain

why vitamin B-6 and magnesium are sometimes helpful. However, I think it is

much better to clear out the yeast, so that the chemical is no longer made

rather than to try to neutralize it. There are many other yeast chemicals which

are not affected by vitamin B-6 and magnesium.

Parents who continue the high doses of vitamins and minerals and then try to

add nystatin often find that nystatin is not helpful. I suspect that one of the

vitamins, perhaps vitamin B-6, binds to nystatin, making it ineffective. I now

recommend to parents not to use the high doses of vitamins and minerals

while giving nystatin.

Acidophilus helps yeast grow. Acidophilus clears out another bad

microorganism, Clostridia, but acidophilus does nothing for yeast. Acidophilus

makes an anti-bacterial chemical. Acidophilus should only be used short-

term, not long-term.

Why can the body's immune system not clear Candida? The Candida has

many tricks to evade the body's immune system. The immune system then

calls in the reinforcements. These immune cells attack the yeast and generate

the signals for inflammation. Inflammation is a defense, like a wall to keep out

the Candida. The Candida is still there, which means the inflammation

remains. In the intestine, this continued inflammation leads to Crohn's disease

and ulcerative colitis. Sometimes these immune cells circulate and find yeast

cells in other places. There is yeast on the skin. Again the yeast is evasive

and the immune cells generate the signals for inflammation. The yeast is not

cleared and the inflammation remains. This leads to skin problems from

itching and eczema to psoriasis.

The Candida has also evolved to look like our own cells. Candida has the

body's own connective tissue receptor on it, which it uses to anchor itself into

our tissues. Sometimes the immune cells, as they attack the yeast, attack

anything which looks like the yeast. What else looks like the yeast? Body cells

which have the connective tissue receptor. This attacking of body cells leads

to " autoimmune diseases " such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis.

In these diseases, the body's immune system appears to be attacking the

body's own tissues. The immune cells are attacking the yeast and then

attacking anything which looks like the yeast.

The yeast chemicals slow the brain down. The gut has its own brain to make

sure all the food goes through the intestinal tract at the right rate. What will

happen if yeast chemicals put the gut's brain to sleep. The result will be

constipation, sometimes very severe. Diarrhea is the body's attempt to clear

the yeast. The diarrhea can be present at the same time as the constipation,

which is why they can alternate.

What happens if the yeast chemicals slow down the body's nerves and put

them to sleep. Then the child can't feel anything or nothing feels right. The

hardest parts of the nerves to numb up are the parts which carry pain. This is

why light touch, instead of feeling pleasant, now feels painful. If the nerves

are

numb, sometimes pain feels better than nothing at all. This is why these

children bang their heads. Even the pain feels better than numbness.

The lack of proper sensation in the mouth is a reason why these children can

become picky eaters. Foods, especially new ones do not feel right to them.

The picky eating improves with anti-yeast treatment.

Why do autistic children have such trouble sleeping? There are many

chemicals which put their brains to sleep. But the brain does not want to go to

sleep from these chemicals. How does the brain fight these chemicals? The

brain stays awake. When the chemicals are removed, children sleep better.

These chemicals also cause headaches and abdominal pain.

What about pregnancy after having an autistic child? Pregnancy may seem

about the scariest thing imaginable after having an autistic child. If we

understand that the yeast chemicals cause major disruptions in development,

we can reduce the risk of autism by clearing these chemicals. How? A woman

who wants to have another child should follow the anti-yeast diet and take

nystatin for a few months before becoming pregnant. She should continue this

program during pregnancy and while nursing. The child should not be given

antibiotics. The child should not be given any foods which help yeast grow.

This program will substantially reduce the risk of a second autistic child.

How does one avoid giving antibiotics to children? Children who do not have

yeast. are much more resistant to infections. Why?

Back in the days before high tech, researchers asked much simpler

questions. They asked whether Candida and tuberculosis like each other. Do

they grow better together. The answer is yes. Candida's capsule helps

tuberculosis to grow. This kind of experiment has been done with other

infectious microorganisms and yeast helps other bad microorganisms to

grow. I suspect that Candida helps the microorganisms at the back of the

mouth to grow and to grow back after antibiotics. The Candida helping the

bad microorganisms is why children get ear infection after ear infections.

I found this intersting...especially the part about possible prevention of other

autistic children during pregnancy since I'm pregnant right now. Regarding the

chicken, the problem should be able to be avoided completely if you use grassfed

chicken as we do. You might want to try that out. What are others thoughts on

this article?

What is the opinion of Nystatin vs. Diflucan? My son is going to do a

trial round of Diflucan and now I'm wondering if it should be Nystatin

instead?

Thanks!

i found this same article in another location on the internet, but

this version has a new paragraph added to it...about the specific

carbohydrate diet. here is the new paragraph (found it at http://

www.nutritioninstitute.com/Autism.html):

" Some people for their autistic children try the specific

carbohydrate diet. This diet is used for people with major allergic

reactions. This diet is not an anti-yeast diet. This diet consists of

simple food molecules which the yeast Candida can easily use to grow.

For fighting yeast, the specific carbohydrate diet has no place and

may make the yeast and the autism worse. "

for us, the scd helped greatly with food allergies, and to lessen the

burden on her gut. this in turn helped reduce her eczema (she does

not have autism). it has also helped us to be able to identify which

foods do and do not agree with her. but, we've had to modify it in

order to make it work for us: no honey in any amount, and very little

fruit, and only the least sweet fruits. and, i believe it made her

yeast overgrowth worse: at the end of the 2nd month, she and i both

had major yeast overgrowth which i battled for the entire third month

(even though we had been taking goat yogurt since week 2 and were

using no honey). finally i took patty's recommendation to start using

coconut oil and that got the yeast back under control.

i am very grateful that i found the scd AND i am still looking for

ways to cure my daughter's yeast problem (the coconut oil seems to

work only while we're taking it). i read up a little more on the

author's anti-yeast program and he does not allow nuts. also no

apples, cinnamon, bananas, vinegar, or dried mustard. i'm curious to

know though if he meant the processed nuts that you buy to eat as a

snack, as opposed to the raw nuts that we all use for our baked goods.

I recommend reading up on copper imbalances and candida. See below... -

http://www.drlwilson.com/Articles/candida.htm

CHRONIC CANDIDA ALBICANS

INFECTION

Yeasts, molds and funguses are one-celled organisms.

Beneficial ones include brewers and nutritional yeast, and lactobacillus

acidophilus. Candida albicans is not among them. It produces poisons including

alcohol.

Candida is found in the air, water and food but not normally

in our bodies. Slow metabolism, deficient acid in the stomach, an over-alkaline

intestinal tract and copper imbalance allow candida to flourish in the body.

Weak adrenals, improper bowel flora, diets high in sugar and taking antibiotics,

antacids, birth control pills and steroid hormones contribute to candida

infection.

SYMPTOMS OF CANDIDA

Symptoms range from chronic fatigue and depression to

headaches, bloating, gas and tightness in the shoulders. Candida can also

contribute to brain fog, mood swings, memory loss, itching, joint pain,

indigestion, ulcers, cancer and many sinus infections. Learning and behavior

disorders are often due in part to candida infection, especially in children who

eat a lot of sugar. Chronic candida can also contribute to irritable bowel

syndrome, colitis, heartburn and gastric acid reflux disease or GERD. One form

of candida is invasive, burrows into body organs and can be life-threatening.

Since candida albicans produces alcohol and acetaldehyde, it

may also contribute to many other subtle dysfunctions, including general

toxicity, liver dysfunction, nutrient deficiencies and more. Some practitioners

blame most illness on candida. I do not find this to be the case. However, it

is very common and an important contributor to ill health.

DETECTION

Symptoms are often excellent for detection. If one is tired

or spacy after eating sweets or a high-carbohydrate meal, candida is likely. If

one gets yeast infections, candida is present in the intestines as well. Gas or

bloating that improves when one stops eating sugars and carbohydrates is another

simple indicator of possible candida infection.

A simple test is to eliminate all sugars, fruit and juices for

a week and take an anti-candida remedy such as grapefruit seed extract. If one

feels better, or possibly worse due to a ëdie offí reaction, candida is likely

present.

Antigen-antibody skin tests are another method of detection.

Stool analysis is also used for detection, though it can miss hidden candida

organisms. On a hair mineral analysis, copper imbalance is associated with

candida. The role of copper is discussed later in this article.

CAUSES - SLOW METABOLISM

In their order of importance, causes include slow

metabolism, copper imbalance, alkaline intestines and tissues, medications, high

carbohydrate diets and other toxins. Most people with candida are slow

metabolizers. While their cells are more acidic, their intercellular spaces are

too alkaline. Their bodies do not generate enough acid end products of

metabolism such as lactic acid. Calcium, an alkaline-forming element, also

builds up adding to the alkalinity. Candida thrives in an alkaline environment

and becomes able to invade tissues and cause serious illness.

Slow metabolizers are also often deficient in hydrochloric

acid. Stomach acid normally kills candida. This is one reason acidophilus, an

acid-forming organism, often helps alleviate candida.

COPPER

Copper is the bodyís natural anti-candida agent. Farmers

often spray copper sulfate on fruits and vegetables to kill yeast and molds.

Water departments may add copper compounds to drinking water for the same

reason. Copper may be added to swimming pools and hot tubs to control yeast.

Copper favors aerobic metabolism which disables yeast.

Everyone with candida has a copper imbalance. Most often,

copper is present but not available to the body. This is due to deficiency of

ceruloplasmin, a copper binding protein. Adrenal hormones are required to

produce ceruloplasmin. Underactive, exhausted adrenal glands or sluggish liver

activity cause a decrease in ceruloplasmin production. As a result, copper is

not properly bound and is less available to the body. Until the

copper-adrenal-liver condition is corrected, candida is difficult to control

Birth control pills impair copper metabolism. Some antibiotics

act by removing copper from the liver. Steroid therapy slows the adrenal glands

which makes copper less available. All can cause or aggravate candida.

Women are more prone to candida infection. Copper imbalance is

more prevalent in women as they tend to have more sluggish adrenals than men.

Copper levels in women rise before the menstrual period. This is a common time

of the month for women to experience yeast infections. Click here to read more

about copper imbalance.

MEDICATIONS

Antibiotic overuse ranks high as a cause for candida.

Acidophilus and other ëfriendlyí yeasts help maintain an acidic intestinal

environment. Antibiotics often kill acidophilus. E. coli and other bacteria

replace the friendly organisms and produce an alkaline environment in which

candida thrives.

Some antibiotics are also toxic for the liver, and may impair

its ability to produce ceruloplasmin. They can persist in the liver for years.

They should be used only as an absolutely last resort and not for viral

infections. Antibiotic residues are now found in tap water. The drugs are

excreted in urine and feces, do not break down and reappear in city water

supplies. This has been documented in several nations. With infrared saunas,

vitamin A, vitamin C and propolis, antibiotics are very rarely needed. Click

here to read an article on antibiotics.

Millions of pounds of antibiotics are also fed to animals.

Commercially grown meats, poultry, milk and eggs contain antibiotic residues.

Although this occurs less today, it is best to buy meat, poultry and dairy

products from sources that do not use antibiotics in animal feed. Animals raised

in a healthful manner rarely require antibiotics.

Antacids and other drugs that reduce acid may worsen candida

by creating a deficiency of stomach acid. Ulcers and heartburn are often due to

wheat allergy or factors other than excess stomach acid. Antacid drugs include

Prilosec, Prevacid, Zantac, Pepcid, Tagamet, Mylanta, Malox, Gaviscon, Riopan,

Rolaids, Tums, Nexium and others. Birth control pills and steroid drugs such as

cortisone or prednisone also contribute to candida.

DIETARY CARBOHYDRATES

Candida starts in the intestines. Excessive consumption of

carbohydrates, particularly sugars, encourages candida infection. The adrenal

glands regulate blood sugar. Sugars in the diet weaken the adrenal glands by

causing large blood sugar fluctuations.

Sugar is the natural food for candida. Sugar and carbohydrate

cravings may be candida organisms calling for dinner. When ëdeprivedí of

carbohydrates, the yeast die, releasing toxic substances. These can cause

unpleasant ëdie offí reactions that can draw one back to sugary foods to end the

discomfort.

Many, many people overeat on carbohydrate foods. Besides the

common foods such as starches and sugars, they include milk, fruit, juices and

sweetened electrolyte drinks.

OTHER TOXIC SUBSTANCES

Excessive mercury often accompanies copper toxicity. Mercury

can stimulate the thyroid which causes adrenal imbalance. Several years are

needed to remove excess mercury. Cadmium is a highly toxic metal that interferes

with zinc needed to balance copper and required for proper functioning of the

adrenals. Cadmium also accumulates in the liver and can impair its ability to

synthesize ceruloplasmin.

Lead toxicity interferes with calcium metabolism. This can

slow the adrenals by altering the electrolyte balance. Toxic chemicals found in

the home, air, water and food also accumulate in the liver, impairing its

ability to produce ceruloplasmin.

IMPROPER BOWEL FLORA

Improper bowel flora is extremely common and often

contributes to candida infections. Much of the problem is due to antibiotic use

and constant ingestion of small doses of antibiotics found in drinking water and

commercial animal products. Other toxic chemicals or additives in foods may

also be a factor.

Low fiber in the diet, parasitic infections and stress also

impair bowel activity. Debris in the intestines, often in pockets in the colon,

also harbors bacteria that interfere with normal bowel flora. Constipation also

aggravates candida infection. If one does not have a daily bowel movement, extra

fiber, ox bile, pancreatin and magnesium will usually correct the problem.

Herbal laxatives can be habit-forming.

One may, however, be constipated even if one has daily bowel

movements. Food should pass through the intestines within 48 hours. When it is

delayed, harmful organisms have more time to multiply and generate toxins. To

test bowel transit time, eat some beets at one meal and note how long it takes

for the red color to show up in the stool. Extra fiber and an improved diet will

often decrease bowel transit time.

SUGAR ADDICTION

Alcohol produced by candida can contribute to fatigue,

spaciness, impaired judgment, emotional problems and learning and behavior

disorders in children. Some people notice they feel tired after eating sugar.

Sugar feeds their candida which increases production of alcohol. Alcoholics are

often addicted to sugar without understanding the connection.

Sugar addiction may occur because depriving candida of their

sugar reduces alcohol production. This causes withdrawal symptoms including

negative thoughts, anxiety, shakiness and fatigue. This drives many people back

to sugar to enhance alcohol output. Hypoglycemia due to weak adrenals is another

factor in sugar addiction.

IMPAIRED IMMUNE SYSTEM

Factors other than copper imbalance may also impair the

bodyís immune system, reducing its ability to defend itself against candida and

other intestinal infections. The most common causes are nutrient deficiencies

and excesses of toxic metals or toxic chemicals. Click here to read an article

on the immune system.

CORRECTION - DIET

Dietary change is most important, especially minimizing all

sweets including fruit juices. This includes reducing cookies, cakes, ice cream,

pastries, honey, rice syrup and barley malt used in soy and rice drinks and

other products. Stevia and artificial sweeteners are somewhat better as they do

not contain sugars, though they present other problems. Stevia contains some

lead, however. Reducing all sweetener use is best.

Reducing grains may be helpful, especially wheat and spelt,

and at times rye, oats and barley. These foods include breads, pasta, deep-fried

food, cream soups thickened with flour, crackers, cakes and cookies.

Reducing fruit is also helpful. Ripe fruit is best, as the

sugars are more quickly absorbed. Avoid very sweet fruits such as dates, figs

and dried fruit. Best fruits are apples, pears, peaches, berries, kiwi and other

less sweet fruits.

Reduce dried beans such as pintos, lentils, black beans and

peanuts. Peanut butter is very sweet and best avoided. Toasted almond, cashew or

sunflower seed butters are much better.

Some candida books recommend eliminating all fermented foods

such as cheese, wine, pickles and yeasted breads. This is usually unnecessary

unless one is specifically allergic to all yeast. Candida albicans is very

different from yeasts in bread, wine and cheese.

Milk and buttermilk are high in sugar. Soda pop, Kool-aid,

fruit and vegetable juices and sweetened teas are best avoided. Unsweetened

live-culture yogurt is good. Unsweetened tea, water or water with lemon are

excellent.

Strict vegetarian diets are high in starch and tend to worsen

candida. Diets low in protein can also make it worse. Natural meats, poultry,

eggs, nuts and goat cheese may be eaten liberally.

The very strict diet in the yeast books is often unnecessary

when combined with a nutritional supplement program to correct underlying

causes. If one follows a strict candida diet, eat more fats and oils for

calories or one will lose a lot of weight.

EATING HABITS

Humans have a limited ability to digest cellulose fiber in

foods. Proper chewing breaks down fiber so that more can be digested.

Insufficient chewing causes excessive fibrous material to remain that can feed

candida. Eating in a hurry, in oneís car, when working or when upset or anxious

also impairs starch digestion and worsens candida.

LIFESTYLE

Lifestyle plays a critical role. Reducing stress rests the

adrenal glands and helps improve copper metabolism. Plenty of rest and sleep are

important, as lack of rest stresses the adrenal glands. Stimulant use such as

caffeine or heavy exercise decimates the adrenal glands. Improving eating habits

and positive emotions and attitudes reduce stress and promote healthy digestion.

Deep breathing and good posture assist oxygenation of the body which inhibits

candida.

ANTI-CANDIDA MEDICATION

Substances that control candida include grapefruit seed

extract, tannic acid (Tanalbit), garlic and acidophilus. I am impressed with the

use of lactobacillus plantarum, which digests protein as well as sugars. Other

natural products are caprylic acid, other medium-chain fatty acids and

echinacea. Some herbal preparations may be toxic. Anti-candida substances may

not be needed if body chemistry is balanced with diet, excellent habits and

lifestyle correction.

Prescription drugs for candida include Diflucan, Nystatin and

Nizoril. These may be needed in emergencies, but are toxic for the liver. One

should avoid them if possible. If more natural methods are not working and one

needs drugs, remain on them no more than two weeks. Anti-fungal products are

helpful, but are not the entire answer. They control symptoms but do not address

underlying causes.

NUTRITIONAL BALANCING

Correcting slow metabolism, copper imbalance, weak adrenals

and an over-alkaline body chemistry requires a hair mineral analysis. When

performed and interpreted properly, it can assess body chemistry and guide

recommendations for diet, supplements and detoxification procedures. The process

can take several years and greatly improves general health.

Many times candida infection is just one of many imbalances

contributing to poor health. It is often a symptom of deeper systemic problems

that ought to be addressed. The advantage of a nutritional balancing program is

it is not a symptomatic approach. It addresses many imbalances and deeper causes

at the same time.

HOW LONG UNTIL I AM HEALTHY?

A better diet often leads to improvement in a few days to a

week. Anti-candida medications also often work quickly. Permanently improving

copper balance, eliminating toxic metals and enhancing the oxidation rate takes

longer, up to several years. However, the time and effort are well worth it.

If one has taken antibiotics recently or took a lot in the

past, more time is needed to remove residues stored in the liver and other

organs. Do not be discouraged if results take longer.

Sauna therapy can significantly speed up correction of candida

infection. It assists elimination of toxins, inhibits the sympathetic nervous

system, improves circulation and oxygenation and directly disables candida

organisms. The electric light sauna described in the last issue is an

inexpensive way anyone can enjoy the great benefits of infrared sauna therapy.

Sauna therapy is the finest method of eliminating unwanted organisms in the

body.

The best results are achieved by combining an excellent diet

and lifestyle with a nutrition program based on mineral analysis to correct

underlying metabolic imbalances. Anti-candida supplements or medication may be

helpful in long-standing and severe cases. With these methods, most candida can

be permanently corrected.

CHRONIC CANDIDA ALBICANS

INFECTION

Yeasts, molds and funguses are one-celled organisms. Beneficial ones include

brewers and nutritional yeast, and lactobacillus acidophilus. Candida albicans

is not among them. It produces poisons including alcohol.

Candida is found in the air, water and food but not normally in our bodies. Slow

metabolism, deficient acid in the stomach, an over-alkaline intestinal tract and

copper imbalance allow candida to flourish in the body. Weak adrenals, improper

bowel flora, diets high in sugar and taking antibiotics, antacids, birth control

pills and steroid hormones contribute to candida infection.

SYMPTOMS OF CANDIDA

Symptoms range from chronic fatigue and depression to headaches, bloating, gas

and tightness in the shoulders. Candida can also contribute to brain fog, mood

swings, memory loss, itching, joint pain, indigestion, ulcers, cancer and many

sinus infections. Learning and behavior disorders are often due in part to

candida infection, especially in children who eat a lot of sugar. Chronic

candida can also contribute to irritable bowel syndrome, colitis, heartburn and

gastric acid reflux disease or GERD. One form of candida is invasive, burrows

into body organs and can be life-threatening.

Since candida albicans produces alcohol and acetaldehyde, it may also contribute

to many other subtle dysfunctions, including general toxicity, liver

dysfunction, nutrient deficiencies and more. Some practitioners blame most

illness on candida. I do not find this to be the case. However, it is very

common and an important contributor to ill health.

DETECTION

Symptoms are often excellent for detection. If one is tired or spacy after

eating sweets or a high-carbohydrate meal, candida is likely. If one gets yeast

infections, candida is present in the intestines as well. Gas or bloating that

improves when one stops eating sugars and carbohydrates is another simple

indicator of possible candida infection.

A simple test is to eliminate all sugars, fruit and juices for a week and take

an anti-candida remedy such as grapefruit seed extract. If one feels better, or

possibly worse due to a ëdie offí reaction, candida is likely present.

Antigen-antibody skin tests are another method of detection. Stool analysis is

also used for detection, though it can miss hidden candida organisms. On a hair

mineral analysis, copper imbalance is associated with candida. The role of

copper is discussed later in this article.

CAUSES - SLOW METABOLISM

In their order of importance, causes include slow metabolism, copper imbalance,

alkaline intestines and tissues, medications, high carbohydrate diets and other

toxins. Most people with candida are slow metabolizers. While their cells are

more acidic, their intercellular spaces are too alkaline. Their bodies do not

generate enough acid end products of metabolism such as lactic acid. Calcium, an

alkaline-forming element, also builds up adding to the alkalinity. Candida

thrives in an alkaline environment and becomes able to invade tissues and cause

serious illness.

Slow metabolizers are also often deficient in hydrochloric acid. Stomach acid

normally kills candida. This is one reason acidophilus, an acid-forming

organism, often helps alleviate candida.

So then, what do we do? Continue the SCD or head in the Nystatin

direction? Since giving my sons Nystatin in the last 2 weeks, TODAY

their behaviors which are charted heavily in their ABA logbooks have

decreased dramtically!! My older son who could not be fed enough

food for the last 3 years (literally we would go out to eat and then

when we left for home he would ask for dinner again) is now eating

until he is satisfied. Why? He had 2 non-compliance marks on his

ill behavior charts today and the day we started Nystatin and 2 days

after his behaviors were charted in the 30's!! I don't find this to

be coincidental....so then, is there a modified SCD/yeast free diet?

This leaves us with rice and broccoli, right? Help!

Rice and brocolli? Are you asking if these are both SCD legal? Rice is

definitely not SCD legal. I would do SCD even if you need the prescription

antifungal. If nothing else, it would at least keep the yeast down more than it

would if your children were eating a " normal " diet. The other thing I would

suggest is for you to try limiting the amount of fruit and honey. Are all of

their fruits and vegetables pealed, seeded, and well cooked? This could be a

key for you. If they're not digesting the raw foods thoroughly, it will feed

yeast...which will gladly take over their guts with overgrowth.

You are not supposed to be too alkaline. Both overly alkaline and overly acidic

brewers and nutritional yeast, and lactobacillus acidophilus.

COPPER

Copper is the bodyís natural anti-candida agent. Farmers often spray copper

sulfate on fruits and vegetables to kill yeast and molds. Water departments may

add copper compounds to drinking water for the same reason. Copper may be added

to swimming pools and hot tubs to control yeast. Copper favors aerobic

metabolism which disables yeast.

Everyone with candida has a copper imbalance. Most often, copper is present but

not available to the body. This is due to deficiency of ceruloplasmin, a copper

binding protein. Adrenal hormones are required to produce ceruloplasmin.

Underactive, exhausted adrenal glands or sluggish liver activity cause a

decrease in ceruloplasmin production. As a result, copper is not properly bound

and is less available to the body. Until the copper-adrenal-liver condition is

corrected, candida is difficult to control

Birth control pills impair copper metabolism. Some antibiotics act by removing

copper from the liver. Steroid therapy slows the adrenal glands which makes

copper less available. All can cause or aggravate candida.

Women are more prone to candida infection. Copper imbalance is more prevalent in

women as they tend to have more sluggish adrenals than men. Copper levels in

women rise before the menstrual period. This is a common time of the month for

women to experience yeast infections. Click here to read more about copper

imbalance.

MEDICATIONS

Antibiotic overuse ranks high as a cause for candida. Acidophilus and other

ëfriendlyí yeasts help maintain an acidic intestinal environment. Antibiotics

often kill acidophilus. E. coli and other bacteria replace the friendly

organisms and produce an alkaline environment in which candida thrives.

Some antibiotics are also toxic for the liver, and may impair its ability to

produce ceruloplasmin. They can persist in the liver for years. They should be

used only as an absolutely last resort and not for viral infections. Antibiotic

residues are now found in tap water. The drugs are excreted in urine and feces,

do not break down and reappear in city water supplies. This has been documented

in several nations. With infrared saunas, vitamin A, vitamin C and propolis,

antibiotics are very rarely needed. Click here to read an article on

antibiotics.

Millions of pounds of antibiotics are also fed to animals. Commercially grown

meats, poultry, milk and eggs contain antibiotic residues. Although this occurs

less today, it is best to buy meat, poultry and dairy products from sources that

do not use antibiotics in animal feed. Animals raised in a healthful manner

rarely require antibiotics.

Antacids and other drugs that reduce acid may worsen candida by creating a

deficiency of stomach acid. Ulcers and heartburn are often due to wheat allergy

or factors other than excess stomach acid. Antacid drugs include Prilosec,

Prevacid, Zantac, Pepcid, Tagamet, Mylanta, Malox, Gaviscon, Riopan, Rolaids,

Tums, Nexium and others. Birth control pills and steroid drugs such as cortisone

or prednisone also contribute to candida.

DIETARY CARBOHYDRATES

Candida starts in the intestines. Excessive consumption of carbohydrates,

particularly sugars, encourages candida infection. The adrenal glands regulate

blood sugar. Sugars in the diet weaken the adrenal glands by causing large blood

sugar fluctuations.

Sugar is the natural food for candida. Sugar and carbohydrate cravings may be

candida organisms calling for dinner. When ëdeprivedí of carbohydrates, the

yeast die, releasing toxic substances. These can cause unpleasant ëdie offí

reactions that can draw one back to sugary foods to end the discomfort.

Many, many people overeat on carbohydrate foods. Besides the common foods such

as starches and sugars, they include milk, fruit, juices and sweetened

electrolyte drinks.

OTHER TOXIC SUBSTANCES

Excessive mercury often accompanies copper toxicity. Mercury can stimulate the

thyroid which causes adrenal imbalance. Several years are needed to remove

excess mercury. Cadmium is a highly toxic metal that interferes with zinc needed

to balance copper and required for proper functioning of the adrenals. Cadmium

also accumulates in the liver and can impair its ability to synthesize

ceruloplasmin.

Lead toxicity interferes with calcium metabolism. This can slow the adrenals by

altering the electrolyte balance. Toxic chemicals found in the home, air, water

and food also accumulate in the liver, impairing its ability to produce

ceruloplasmin.

IMPROPER BOWEL FLORA

Improper bowel flora is extremely common and often contributes to candida

infections. Much of the problem is due to antibiotic use and constant ingestion

of small doses of antibiotics found in drinking water and commercial animal

products. Other toxic chemicals or additives in foods may also be a factor.

Low fiber in the diet, parasitic infections and stress also impair bowel

activity. Debris in the intestines, often in pockets in the colon, also harbors

bacteria that interfere with normal bowel flora. Constipation also aggravates

candida infection. If one does not have a daily bowel movement, extra fiber, ox

bile, pancreatin and magnesium will usually correct the problem. Herbal

laxatives can be habit-forming.

One may, however, be constipated even if one has daily bowel movements. Food

should pass through the intestines within 48 hours. When it is delayed, harmful

organisms have more time to multiply and generate toxins. To test bowel transit

time, eat some beets at one meal and note how long it takes for the red color to

show up in the stool. Extra fiber and an improved diet will often decrease bowel

transit time.

SUGAR ADDICTION

Alcohol produced by candida can contribute to fatigue, spaciness, impaired

judgment, emotional problems and learning and behavior disorders in children.

Some people notice they feel tired after eating sugar. Sugar feeds their candida

which increases production of alcohol. Alcoholics are often addicted to sugar

without understanding the connection.

Sugar addiction may occur because depriving candida of their sugar reduces

alcohol production. This causes withdrawal symptoms including negative thoughts,

anxiety, shakiness and fatigue. This drives many people back to sugar to enhance

alcohol output. Hypoglycemia due to weak adrenals is another factor in sugar

addiction.

IMPAIRED IMMUNE SYSTEM

Factors other than copper imbalance may also impair the bodyís immune system,

reducing its ability to defend itself against candida and other intestinal

infections. The most common causes are nutrient deficiencies and excesses of

toxic metals or toxic chemicals. Click here to read an article on the immune

system.

CORRECTION - DIET

Dietary change is most important, especially minimizing all sweets including

fruit juices. This includes reducing cookies, cakes, ice cream, pastries, honey,

rice syrup and barley malt used in soy and rice drinks and other products.

Stevia and artificial sweeteners are somewhat better as they do not contain

sugars, though they present other problems. Stevia contains some lead, however.

Reducing all sweetener use is best.

Reducing grains may be helpful, especially wheat and spelt, and at times rye,

oats and barley. These foods include breads, pasta, deep-fried food, cream soups

thickened with flour, crackers, cakes and cookies.

Reducing fruit is also helpful. Ripe fruit is best, as the sugars are more

quickly absorbed. Avoid very sweet fruits such as dates, figs and dried fruit.

Best fruits are apples, pears, peaches, berries, kiwi and other less sweet

fruits.

Reduce dried beans such as pintos, lentils, black beans and peanuts. Peanut

butter is very sweet and best avoided. Toasted almond, cashew or sunflower seed

butters are much better.

Some candida books recommend eliminating all fermented foods such as cheese,

wine, pickles and yeasted breads. This is usually unnecessary unless one is

specifically allergic to all yeast. Candida albicans is very different from

yeasts in bread, wine and cheese.

Milk and buttermilk are high in sugar. Soda pop, Kool-aid, fruit and vegetable

juices and sweetened teas are best avoided. Unsweetened live-culture yogurt is

good. Unsweetened tea, water or water with lemon are excellent.

Strict vegetarian diets are high in starch and tend to worsen candida. Diets low

in protein can also make it worse. Natural meats, poultry, eggs, nuts and goat

cheese may be eaten liberally.

The very strict diet in the yeast books is often unnecessary when combined with

a nutritional supplement program to correct underlying causes. If one follows a

strict candida diet, eat more fats and oils for calories or one will lose a lot

of weight.

EATING HABITS

Humans have a limited ability to digest cellulose fiber in foods. Proper chewing

breaks down fiber so that more can be digested. Insufficient chewing causes

excessive fibrous material to remain that can feed candida. Eating in a hurry,

in oneís car, when working or when upset or anxious also impairs starch

digestion and worsens candida.

LIFESTYLE

Lifestyle plays a critical role. Reducing stress rests the adrenal glands and

helps improve copper metabolism. Plenty of rest and sleep are important, as lack

of rest stresses the adrenal glands. Stimulant use such as caffeine or heavy

exercise decimates the adrenal glands. Improving eating habits and positive

emotions and attitudes reduce stress and promote healthy digestion. Deep

breathing and good posture assist oxygenation of the body which inhibits

candida.

ANTI-CANDIDA MEDICATION

Substances that control candida include grapefruit seed extract, tannic acid

(Tanalbit), garlic and acidophilus. I am impressed with the use of lactobacillus

plantarum, which digests protein as well as sugars. Other natural products are

caprylic acid, other medium-chain fatty acids and echinacea. Some herbal

preparations may be toxic. Anti-candida substances may not be needed if body

chemistry is balanced with diet, excellent habits and lifestyle correction.

Prescription drugs for candida include Diflucan, Nystatin and Nizoril. These may

be needed in emergencies, but are toxic for the liver. One should avoid them if

possible. If more natural methods are not working and one needs drugs, remain on

them no more than two weeks. Anti-fungal products are helpful, but are not the

entire answer. They control symptoms but do not address underlying causes.

NUTRITIONAL BALANCING

Correcting slow metabolism, copper imbalance, weak adrenals and an over-alkaline

body chemistry requires a hair mineral analysis. When performed and interpreted

properly, it can assess body chemistry and guide recommendations for diet,

supplements and detoxification procedures. The process can take several years

and greatly improves general health.

Many times candida infection is just one of many imbalances contributing to poor

health. It is often a symptom of deeper systemic problems that ought to be

addressed. The advantage of a nutritional balancing program is it is not a

symptomatic approach. It addresses many imbalances and deeper causes at the same

time.

HOW LONG UNTIL I AM HEALTHY?

A better diet often leads to improvement in a few days to a week. Anti-candida

medications also often work quickly. Permanently improving copper balance,

eliminating toxic metals and enhancing the oxidation rate takes longer, up to

several years. However, the time and effort are well worth it.

If one has taken antibiotics recently or took a lot in the past, more time is

needed to remove residues stored in the liver and other organs. Do not be

discouraged if results take longer.

Sauna therapy can significantly speed up correction of candida infection. It

assists elimination of toxins, inhibits the sympathetic nervous system, improves

circulation and oxygenation and directly disables candida organisms. The

electric light sauna described in the last issue is an inexpensive way anyone

can enjoy the great benefits of infrared sauna therapy. Sauna therapy is the

finest method of eliminating unwanted organisms in the body.

The best results are achieved by combining an excellent diet and lifestyle with

a nutrition program based on mineral analysis to correct underlying metabolic

imbalances. Anti-candida supplements or medication may be helpful in

long-standing and severe cases. With these methods, most candida can be

permanently corrected.

i found this same article in another location on the internet, but

this version has a new paragraph added to it...about the specific

carbohydrate diet. here is the new paragraph (found it at http://

www.nutritioninstitute.com/Autism.html):

Hi ,

<<What is the opinion of Nystatin vs. Diflucan? My son is going to do

a trial round of Diflucan and now I'm wondering if it should be

Nystatin > instead?>>

I didn't have much luck with nystatin but found natural antifungals

worked.

Some people have had good rsults with the prescription meds but " in

general " reports posted overthe years tend to say that once they stop

the prescription meds the yeast comes back.

Perhaps using the pres. antifungals along with SCD may work.
