Hi everyone.

I have a question re: coffee (regular not decaf) I had the nerves cut to my

pancreas exactly a month ago. I am no longer on any type of pain med except I

take Ibuprofen if I feel a little pain. Anyway I hadn't drank coffee since

before my surgery because the smell made me nauseous. I have started just this

week drinking it again and now today my panc is starting to hurt. Do you think

it is the coffee or just a coincidence?

Patty, not sure what to say , but I will tell you I just got over a

severe attack a few days ago and I had eaten coffee candies. I mean the

pain was unbelievable. So I think there is a correlation. I asked the

nurse practitioner and she said that it keeps the pancreas stimulated and

causes inflammation. Take care and hope you feel better. I am still

under the weather. Hardly able to eat at all now. Take care prayers to

all. Deb

I think I remember reading somewhere that there may be an

association with caffeine consumption and sphincter of Oddi

spasms.

It could be that this is the pain that you are feeling (?) The nerve

cut may not have severed the impulses from your SO if caffeine

is the culprit......

just speculation.

Patty,

In answer to your question concerning the sphincterotomy:

It could, the sphincterotomy cuts the muscle to relieve the

pressure but the muscle itself is still there, along with the nerves

that control its action. Think of have a small cut in a rubber band.

The band can still stretch and tighten in response to

pressure...but it has a more relaxed or less tension in its

make-up (It isn't completely severed, like when we break a

rubberband and it snaps and has no further " banding " use).

What I mean, is that it still functions, so it could still produce pain

if it goes into a spasm.

In addition, scarring in the area of the cuts can make the opening

smaller so that under conditions when the SO is spasming, it

gets temporarily obstructed maybe causing the pain. Also, I

have read that it is relatively common to not make the cuts long

enough or at the right place so that the whole spasming

component of SOD may not be completely addressed. That is

one reason why some people have a repeat procedure

done...but that usually occurs because the first endoscopist isn't

as skilled as the more experienced ones are.

Patty,

I have to add my two cents, and that is

everymorning that i do have coffee i can expect an

attack. It never fails either, so i try to stay away

from it as much as possible and drink tea.

As long as your taking a poll here, caffeine doesn't bother me at all.

I drink 2 cups of coffee each morning, several diet pepsi's or

raspberry teas throughout the day, and a cup or two of international

no-sugar, no-fat Cafe Vienna coffees each night.

Everybody's different!

With love, hope and prayers,

Hi, I make a large cappucino or a few cups of coffee every morning.

The caffeine also helps to lessen my appetite as I only eat lunch and

dinner every day. If I ate 3 meals I would need even more pain meds

and I take enough as it is. Just my 2 cents....Jim
