Guest guest
Hi , <<here's a link to an article about our using coconut kefir to help > Baxter's gut issues. Kefir is not recommended for newbies on the SCD. Elaine wrote that once a person was well they could try it. Young coconut milk is not legal because it is an unripe fruit. Guest guest
Sheila, How long in to SCD would you say one should be before even trying kefir? Does one use the same amount of starter that would be used for making yogurt? For example, a half gallon of milk uses 1/4 tsp. of Progurt starter? Would I use that same amount of Progurt starter if I am making a half gallon of coconut kefir? Again, how long should one be on SCD before even considering this? Thanks. Guest guest
The kefir is an advanced food. I used to be a kefir advocate long before I heard about the Body Ecology Diet. I had used it on my older son and he still drinks it daily. Elaine was not thrilled with my love for kefir....We clashed on that issue but still loved each other. I did however read the messages on the Yahoo list that was especially created for children with ASD who were doing the Body Ecology Diet. I followed the messages during the first year of that diet and was surprised to find out that some children did get long lasting bad reactions from the kefir. I learned the hard way that Elaineis always right. Mimi Reformed SCD rebel PS I will discuss more about kefir tomorrow night. Kefir is fine for advanced SCD folks. > Sheila, > How long in to SCD would you say one should be before even trying kefir? > Does one use the same amount of starter that would be used for making > yogurt? Guest guest
So, do you think a year in to SCD is long enough? iel is able to tolerate raw fruits and vegetables, beans, ect. He certainly is completely recovered from ASD, but is well on his way. I'd say he will lose his diagnosis within the next year. Should I try it, or stay away? Guest guest
Mimi -- what were the bad reactions to the keifer? We did young coconut kefir YCK for a year in 2004. I don't think it did anything bad to (or noticably good), but one day we ran out of it and I wanted to give him something sour/strange to drink like the YCK (so that he wouldn't get something yummy like lemonade and then not want the YCK once it was done fermenting). I gave him watered down aloe juice. He had better stools on that I realized so I abandoned the YCK after 1 year. I never drank it as it gave me an upset stomach. The fermented coconut " pudding " really caused gas (the pudding is what you make with the coconut meat after you empty the coconut water). A friend of mine became a BED counselor and her sons did really well with the YCK. She later wrote a book that is based on BED for autism with some changes in the diet that helped her sons. One of them was to only do YCK twice/week, because she attibuted her son's coconut sensitivity to drinking so much of the YCK. They do well on it now if it is given twice/week, not a quart/day as BED advises. The argument for keifer (coconut or dairy) vs. yogurt is that keifer can recolonize the GI tract while yogurt cannot. Both are recognized as good, but keifer is thought to be superior by many (not just BEDers). I have read that keifer is SCD legal if fermented 24 hours (which is how long keifer is always fermented I believe), but then again I read that it is only for the advanced (after 1 year). Mimi, I look forward to you shedding some light on this. Also, is there a story on kombucha tea? I love that stuff! Is that eventually allowed? I'm thinking no. - pecan post wrote: The kefir is an advanced food. I used to be a kefir advocate long before I heard about the Body Ecology Diet. Guest guest
You need a different starter to make keifer -- one that contains yeast. Better yet are keifer grains. - robin wrote: Sheila, How long in to SCD would you say one should be before even trying kefir? Guest guest
Hi Meleah, <<So, do you think a year in to SCD is long enough? >> A year on the diet is good but more important are the state of his bowels. Since he is able to tolerate raw fruits, veggies and beans it sounds as if he is doing well. If he tolerates other fermented he may be okay with properly made Kefir. Just try a small amount to start with. (Remember after fermenting it has ~5% residual lactose). http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/knowledge_base/kb/kefir.htm http://www.healingcrow.com/ferfun/ferfun.html Sheila <<iel is able to tolerate raw fruits and vegetables, beans, ect. Guest guest
He does tolerate the yogurt just fine. I did some reading this weekend on the sites that Mimi put links on a post for about kefir. Now I'm wondering how good it is to give a child kefir since it does have an alcohol content...so it appearred to me when reading. Is this true? Guest guest
Hi Meleah, ***Newbies reading this: Kefir is only for those doing very well who are symptom free*** Yes, there is alcohol produced in Kefir. 0.06%-3% alcohol. From http://www.kefir.biz/ferm.htm " The average alcohol content in home brewing is around 0.5% with a loose lid and 1% in an airtight jar " http://jds.fass.org/cgi/reprint/79/6/937.pdf Sheila, SCD Feb. 2001, UC 23 yrs mom of and > He does tolerate the yogurt just fine.
