question about antihistimine

I have a question. Is an antihistamine supposed to wire you when you

take it? I am having allergy problems. The allergist said he would give

me Astelin nasal spray (non-steroidal) but not Allegra or another pill

as they tend to make me wired. While I have been doing the Astelin, I am

so very wired off of it and it is a very uncomfortable feeling. I get

this same feeling when I take percocet. I usually counteract that with

valium or xanax, but I can't do that all the time with this spray.

Does antihistamine make anyone else wired? I looked the drug up on

rxlist.com and there are no drug interactions and nothing

contra-indicated for pancreatitis, but I don't know if I can live with

this feeling. Then again, the allergies themselves is pretty bad too.

Thanks,

Sandy in Ca

Hi Sandy,

My husband reacts the same way to anti-histamine as you are.

Especially benadryl. even 25mg of it will keep him awake all

night, whereas for me, I use 50mg at night as sleeping pills.

This reaction of his is known, I think, as a paradoxical reaction.

Probably has something to do with genetics.

He and I use steroid nasal spray with no problems. I am not

sure if the anti-histamine only type would affect him the same

way too. Usually nasal sprays do not become systemic...that is,

the active ingrediants stay in the nasal passages and do not get

into the general circulation to any detectable extent. But if you are

very sensitive, then even that small amount may be enough to

give you that reaction. Very interesting.

Sandy, when I take percocet, I am up all night. I get a bit drowsy,

but then that goes and I can't get to sleep. I can shut my eyes, but I

just lay there and listen to the noises around me...is a pain in the

butt..

I also have the problem of antihistamines and reactions. When I take

them, I lose control of my left arm and end up with restless limb

syndrome. I literally walk the walls...and I hate it.

It helps to have my pain medicine after I have the antihistamine stuff

when they are for an attack, but for the allergies, I have to use

Nasonex.
