Guest guest
Hi guys! Sorry it took me so long to get any info on here. I thought my hubby had updated to let you all know how I was doing but he didn't. Oh well! I am doing fine. I had my surgery with Dr. Adam's on Thursday of last week and came home on Monday. I could have come home on Sunday but since it was a 2 1/1 hour drive I didn't want to push it. The surgery was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. However, the hospital stay was horrible! I had some awful nurses and some wonderful nurses. I was on the 10th floor at MUSC. I have one nurse who I will never let near me again! He tried to overrule everything the docs said. I am going to report him and write a letter to the hospital. If anyone has any info on how to report him please let me know. Dr. Adam's was very frustrated with him also. He straightened this nurse out and then when the next day came and he knew Dr. Adam's wasn't coming in and it was just going to be the interns he was back to his same old ways. On the day after surgery I went 6 hours without any pain meds at all. I kept telling this nurse something was wrong and he jumped all over me and told me I was abusing the morphine pump. I told him I was pushing the button like a madwoman with no relief and that there had to be something wrong with it. I was in tears from the pain when finally my nursing assistant came in to check my vitals and when she moved my pump she said what it this all over the floor. Well, it was morphine. The pump was not hooked up correctly and it leaked all over the floor. They got a new nurse to come in and fix it and change my i.v. line out into another hand because the phenergan had messed up my veins so much in the other one. After she got that under control and she called and asked if she could get a shot of dilaudid for me to get my pain back under control until the morphine could could start working again I was o.k. I have never had such an awful hospital visit. I did have some great nurses. One named Lori was so sweet! And a man named Don who was so wonderful to me. They both apologized for the other nurses when they looked at my chart and saw I had not received my pain meds like I was supposed to. My nursing assistants were great too! One named Phyllis and one named Willa were so good to me. Please let me know if any of you had the same experiences with any nurses on that floor. If you can email me privately and I will let you know the nurses name to see if it was the same one that I had a horrible time with. I would like to have the most info I have when I report him. Take care and I hope everyone is doing ok! I will catch up on my email to see how everyone is doing! Guest guest
Angie I am so sorry that you have had such a hard time on the 10th floor. I was up there quite abit during themonth of may and have to admit I received excellent care. I know the staff members you mentioned and they are terrific. I had looked for you to post your last name so that Ic ould at least give you a call. I suspected that since you didnt' want to post it you preferred to be left in peace. Some poeple are like that and its ok. Maybe I was treated well becaue I knew most of them from when I worked at MUSC. I sure do hope read that one guy the riot act. I saw him today in follow up and am doing well I have had a bad couple of weeks but things are inproving. I hope that all your pain is gone and you are feeling much better as far as the panc is concerned. It will take alittle while to get over the surgery itself. thanks for asking about me and I hope you get better every day. Warmly,

Guest guest
, No I just forgot to post it! I told my hubby to do it and he forgot too! My last name is . Dr. Adam's did get him straightened out but when he saw that Dr. Adam's wasn't coming back the next day he started right back up again. I had an attack today. I was so upset. I thought that would be behind me. My blood sugar is going crazy also. How long should I expect for this to get better. Not the blood sugar, I know that probably won't, but the CP attacks. I was praying so hard that there would be no more. Is this something I should expect until it heals and then it goes away after the spincteroplasty Or does this mean I will continue to have attacks? Thanks girl! I go back to Dr. Adam's next week. I am afraid I will be out of pain meds before next week if the attacks continue. The nurse I was mentioning that was so awful, told me that I didn't understand how breakthrough meds worked. Dr. Adam's had ordered 3 Oxycodone every 4 hours. He said I could take 2 then take one in between the 4 hour period for breakthrough. Well, my nurse said no. That if I took my 2 oxycodone and then took 1 in between that I had to wait another 4 hours after that 1 pill for anymore. So that was 6 hours on 1 5mg oxycodone. Oxycodone is not a long lasting pain med. It is quick acting but not long lasting. That is why Dr. Adam's ordered it that way. My nurse would not listen to me. He said that was not they way breakthrough pain meds were supposed to work. He was a real piece of work!!! Am I wrong about that, are breakthrough meds supposed to work the way my nurse said? I don't think I was but maybe I am wrong. I thought breakthrough was in between doses and that you started back over again in the next 4th hour not waiting 4 hours after the breakthrough dose. Please let me know if I am wrong! I am new to all of this stuff with breakthrough pain meds. I am only taking oxycodone now. 3- 5mg. tablets every 4 hours. I take 2 and then if I needs the 3rd one after 2 hours I take it and then after the 4 hours is up from the original dose I take my next 2 again. Is that the way it is supposed to work or is the nurse right? Guest guest
Angie, I'm so sorry that you had a horrible time in the hospital after the surgery. Definitely report this nurse to the head of the hospital, the chief of staff for nurses, jcaho, and if there is a state nursing board to them too and whoever gives nurses their licenses. Hopefully that will either straighten the nurse out or they'll pull the nurse's license. Kimber -- Kimber Vallejo, CA hominid2@... Guest guest
Kimber, Thanks! What is strange about this whole situation is that the floor he is on deals with serious pain issues. If he always on that floor that is. He may be a floater. The cancer patients are on that floor also if I remember correctly. Their pain should have been dealt with also. If he was doing that to me what was he doing to them! What about the people who aren't educated enough to know they have a right to speak up and get what they need. That is not the kind of nurse to have on that type of floor. I feel I owe it to the hospital and the patients on that floor to report him. Thanks! I hope you are doing well! Guest guest
Hey Angie, I wanted to apologize for not getting up there to see you while you were at MUSC. I just read your post about your experiences with the nasty nurse who gave you such a hard time about your pain meds and WOW!!, I'm amazed that you managed to get through it! It sounds like it was tough going there initially, but you managed to survive that ordeal and it eventually worked out. Seems there's always one nasty nurse to spoil the whole deal, but then many great ones make up for it. Your hubby didn't update us, so I was in a panic because I couldn't get up there to see you as I said I would. My grandson, Austin, has been going to the same summer camp, Camp Chatuga, for the last 5 years. Another boy from our town goes with him, and each year I share the driving responsibilities with the other boy's parents. We trade off each year, one of us taking the boys up to camp, and the other parent picking them up at the end of the session. I ended up having to be the driver for the drop off this year, and had to drive up to Mountain Rest, SC on the weekend, spend the night, and leave the boys at camp on Monday. On my return trip Monday, I called the hospital to see if you were still there, and they told me that you had checked out. If you were still there, I had planned to go to ton to see you, and then spend the night at my daughter's before returning to Bluffton. You were already gone, though, so I didn't even get to talk to you on the phone, drat! We'll just have to get to meet each other another way. Symposium, perhaps? Sorry that part of your stay at the hospital was so miserable. You must be really happy to be back in your own home, and I do hope that the surgery was successful and that you're starting to feel better. I've been out of town all week and weekend, and am just now catching up on the posts, so I hope there's another one ahead, telling us that you're doing well.
