Guest guest
SCD solved my son's constipation problem. Please try this diet. We have lots of people here to help you along the way. Could you be more specific about his problems eating fruits and vegetables? , mom to > > My son diagnosed with PDD at age 2 is now almost 6. We have started > GFCF diet. He has limited food choices. Guest guest
For what it's worth, I have a 7 year old daughter, SCD since Feb, who has struggled with constipation for years. We had been to Riley Hospital for Children to see their GI specialist, etc. Nothing any doc told us helped. She was also a VERY picky eater (wouldn't even eat applesauce) and very opinionated, so I just knew starting SCD would be a struggle. I decided cold turkey was the way to go for us--the whole family together! At 6 or 7, they are old enough to understand the explanation of why the diet is necessary--the gut bug talk! The beginning was a bit rocky, but amazingly she just started eating more variety without a fight. I still have to get creative with the some of the veggies (puree and hide it in meatloaf, muffins, etc). I have discovered that if I turn something into muffin form, pancake form, or give it a silly name she loves it! (our butternut squash puree is called a " pot of gold " - I make it in little individual dishes for her, and we make " shrek-pops " which are frozen pureed green beans, avocado, and apple cider or homemade yogurt) A little creativity goes along way with the 6 year old set. Her grandparents who always commented on what a poor eater she was before, can't get over the change. The good news - the constipation is gone! After the first week with SCD! and her behaviour has vastly improved as well. Good luck to you and your little guy. Guest guest
My son won't try any new foods. He used to eat canned green beans, carrots, corn. Now that I started fresh or frozen veg, he won't eat them at all, except for corn. I made legal zucchini muffins and blueberry muffins, but the novelty has worn off. Doesn't really like them too much anymore. He used to love regular french fries. He won't even try sweet potato fries. This is his menu Breakfast legal plain or blueberry pancakes (I am mixing honey with maple syrup since he didn't like honey) eggs legal waffles apples or ripe bananas pear fruit cup Lunch (can't bring anything with nuts to school) legal turkey or chicken hot dogs corn I keep offering him the carrots & green beans too but he really doesn't eat them apples ripe bananas pears Dinner legal chicken nuggets legal turkey or chicken hot dogs legal fish sticks I'm hoping that he will soon try new foods. I told him that I would give him Dollars (play money) for every juice (with all his supplements in them) he drinks and for also trying new foods. It's not working that great. Guest guest
I sneak veggies into my kids using the egg fu yung recipe found here: http://www.geocities.com/momtobandj/recipes/eggfuyung.html Instead of the onions (which we can't do yet) I blend in veggies that we can tolerate. Today I made it with 2 small zucchini (peeled and deseeded) and some leftover deseeded green beans. They ate it up without hesitation. All they taste is the egg and chicken! These could probably be made in advance and sent to school for lunch as well. My kids won't eat cooked carrots that are just sliced, but if I puree them in the blender and add lots of butter and a pinch of salt, they eat it up! You can also sneak chicken broth into this as well! Try making pancakes out stuff, I love the sneak veggie pancake recipe found here: http://pecanbread.com/new/recipes1.html so far we have made this with carrots and with butternut squash, either way my kids clean the plate! Also the pumpkin pie filling recipe (same website above) is a great way to get squash into the kids. We make ours with vanilla instead of honey because we can't tolerate honey yet. In the begining I wouldn't worry too much about variety, if you do the intro diet, you will be slowly introducing foods and for a while your diet will be pretty basic. For example, we just did the intro diet a week ago. We are currently eating: meat, fish, butter/oils/fats, eggs, ripe banana, zucchini (peeled and deseeded), green beans (french style), cooked pureed carrots, and butternut squash. That is it right now, I just try to vary it so it looks different each meal, LOL. Different combinations, methods of prep, etc etc. Once you get the bad bugs in the gut dieing off, you'll find your son might expand his tastes a bit too. Before starting SCD most kids on the spectrum are pretty carb crazed. Once you get them past that they usually will try new foods and eat things you never thought they would. It is working that way so far for my son. K Hashi's, Fibro, CFS, yeast/candida, copper overload, adrenal fatigue (mostly healed!!!) kids: son Rhowan 5 yrs old, chronic diarrhea/loose stools, yeast/candida, ADHD, salicylate intolerance, daughter Willow 6.5 yrs old, mild GI issues, salicylate intolerance Started SCD June 2006, went slightly off for awhile in Nov 2006, back on strict SCD starting May 2007. (Just redid intro the last week of June 2007 and are taking it SLOW and we are seeing some real progress!!!!!) > > My son won't try any new foods. He used to eat canned green beans, > carrots, corn. Guest guest
Corn is a grain and not a vegetable. It is not legal. Maple syrup is not legal either. Try some popscicles? That is how my son has been able to get lots of veggies into his diet. You can hide lots of veggies in grape juice or orange juice. His favorites though are purreed squash, peaches, and coconut oil. Smoothies with a really cool straw? Good Luck!!!!!!
Guest guest
Hi cmas447, <<My son won't try any new foods. He used to eat canned green beans, > carrots, corn. Now that I started fresh or frozen veg, he won't eat them at all, except for corn.>> Have you started the diet yet - (I noticed this thread started beginning of June)? If yes, corn is not SCD legal - it is a grain. <<> I made legal zucchini muffins and blueberry muffins, but the novelty has worn off. Doesn't really like them too much anymore. > > He used to love regular french fries. He won't even try sweet potato fries. >> Sweet potatoes are not SCD legal - too much starch. Butternut squash can make pretty good fries; recipe in BTVC and also at www.pecanbread.com << This is his menu > Breakfast > legal plain or blueberry pancakes (I am mixing honey with maple syrup since he didn't like honey)>> Maple syrup isn't SCD legal , it is natural but has illegals in it. There is a good syrup recipe in BTVC, with the pancakes. You can add a little butter/ghee/coconut butter, and/or vanilla extract and water to thin honey so it is more like syrup. <<eggs > legal waffles > apples or ripe bananas > pear fruit cup>> Most commercial pear fruit cups have added sweetener. A legal one would have to be pears in their own juice (not " Pears in pear juice " - this can have added sugar.) If he is still suffering from constipation all fruits and veggies should be peeled and cooked for easier digestion. > Lunch (can't bring anything with nuts to school) > legal turkey or chicken hot dogs > corn > I keep offering him the carrots & green beans too but he really > doesn't eat them > apples > ripe bananas > pears > > Dinner > legal chicken nuggets > legal turkey or chicken hot dogs > legal fish sticks > > I'm hoping that he will soon try new foods.>> Does he like spaghetti sauce? Some parents puree veggies into the homemade meatsauce and serve it over spaghetti squash or veggies. Guest guest
We were GFCF for a month. I am slowly moving over to SCD. He just ate a hamburger for the first time in his life !! Now his has BM's about 4 to 5 times a week, and they are watery (probably due to S. Boulardi / CANDEX. I am starting slow since he can be very very hard to handle behavior-wise. He is very smart IQ of 122. If I take everything away at once, he'll tear my house apart. Chris Mom of 6yr old, Aspergers / Constipation 4 yrs.
