Guest guest
HI, We are getting ourselves organised to start the diet and are looking at yogurt makers. I bought one, which I read on the sdc oz site is unsuitable, so back it went. I don't want to make the same mistake again & am looking at perhaps getting a food dehydrator which will also make yogurt. Does anyone know of one apart from the Excalibur range which does this? Or if anyone does have an Excalibur could you possibly let me know if it is any good or not & do I need the biggest one to make yogurt, or can I do it in the 4 or 5 tray models? They are very expensive over here, so I want to check if it really is the best option. Thanks! Also, my ASD son has been GFCF for a year until recently we introduced goats milk & it seems ok, does this mean we can try the goats yogurt straight away on the diet or should we wait until after the intro diet? Any advice would be great. Thanks, Nonni (IBS), Mum to (ASD),SCD really soon (getting closer!)
Guest guest
i have the 9 tray model, and it is just tall enough to fit the 1Q sized mason jars, which is what i use to make yogurt. i can fit about 6 in there comfortably. you could do it in a shorter machine, i would imagine, but would have to find a shallow pan - perhaps a corningware casserole dish with lid? i'm not sure because i haven't seen the smaller dehydrators. but, how much money will you really save in the long run? if you can't make that much yogurt at a time, you might be running your dehydrator often, and believe me it is LOUD. > HI, We are getting ourselves organised to start the diet and are > looking at yogurt makers. Guest guest
I agree with Silvia--the dehydrator is loud. Not vacuum cleaner loud but louder than the dishwasher--mildly unpleasant to be listening to as you work and eat in the kitchen. I moved mine into my dining room so I wouldn't have to listen to it. It also takes up a lot of counter space. But on the very positive side, I'm happy that dehydrators are made to run for 24+ hours without over-heating. The temperature control is not digital, so I use a thermometer and I have to watch it for a while to make sure the temp is in the appropriate range. I used to find this annoying, but now I feel lucky because there have been so many posts about listmates' yogurt-makers running at too high a temp (presumably because they were not made to run for 24 hours.) So I would definitely recommend the dehydrator. It's hard to say what size you will need. Some of us make a lot more yogurt than others. I went for the big one so that I wouldn't be frustrated later and shell out more money to get the bigger one down the road. Good luck with your decision, , mom to > > HI, We are getting ourselves organised to start the diet and are > looking at yogurt makers.
