Guest guest
hi everyone! my name is emma and i have just started scd for my daughter. this past oct. she started having bad gi issues, she has some sensory integration problems as well. at first we did gf/cf plus enzymes and a stronger probiotic, and she did good, then this jan. she started having more reactions to food. i did the elimination diet and she did great, her dr suggested we try the leaky gut test since she seems to have so many reactions - to phenols for example. so we got the results back and her gut is horrendously leaky. she is on colostrum and l-glutamine (both kirkman and legal) but i found elaine's book and decided to try the diet, that was about 3 weeks ago. i started with more advanced foods, just to eliminate the rice products (cashew butter muffins for ex.) plus we were going on vacation so i needed some premade stuff. then when we got back i started stage 1 for a week before doing the intro this weekend, and now she is on stage 1 again. i haven't added much yet, she has the phenol problem so i've been waiting for the phenol assist enzyme to arrive before trying the zucchini, carrots, etc. i tried applesauce (golden delicious) but it seemed to go through her quickly. her stool went from mushy with some undigested stuff to firm with nothing undigested that i can see (sorry tmi) she also has high oxalates, she was on vsl#3 but i think she had a bad reaction to it, so i just started her on the legal probiotic from kirkman. so we're in week three, and she seems like she has add, it is hard to get her attention at times, she is also urinating frequently as well as bed wetting, she has been asking for cow milk even though she's never had it, she is hungry almost constantly!, her nose has been running since about the second or third day of the diet. i am hoping this is die-off. how long can it last? if her gut was really leaky, could her die-off symptoms take a long time or is it because i went into this thing kinda backwards, doing stage 2 then 1 then intro? also, when do i know to add foods? should the stool be my guide, i'm a bit confused because the book seems to rely on that but if she is having behavioral issues should i go slower? also, based on the info i've given, when should i add the yogurt? i really want to, but since her gut is so leaky i'm afraid to do anything! anyway, thanks for reading this - this is a great group, i'm so excited to be doing this! emma daughter 3.5 3 weeks scd
Guest guest
Welcome Emma, <<about 3 weeks ago. i started with more advanced > foods, just to eliminate the rice products (cashew butter muffins > for ex.) plus we were going on vacation so i needed some premade > stuff. then when we got back i started stage 1 for a week before > doing the intro this weekend, and now she is on stage 1 again. i > haven't added much yet, she has the phenol problem so i've been > waiting for the phenol assist enzyme to arrive before trying the > zucchini, carrots, etc. i tried applesauce (golden delicious) but > it seemed to go through her quickly. her stool went from mushy with > some undigested stuff to firm with nothing undigested that i can see > (sorry tmi) she also has high oxalates,>> <<she was on vsl#3 but i think > she had a bad reaction to it, so i just started her on the legal > probiotic from kirkman. so we're in week three, and she seems like > she has add, it is hard to get her attention at times, she is also > urinating frequently as well as bed wetting, she has been asking for cow milk even though she's never had it, she is hungry almost > constantly!, her nose has been running since about the second or > third day of the diet. i am hoping this is die-off. how long can > it last?>> The bed wetting, increased hunger, runny nose are common at the onset of the diet - die off symptoms. See: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/pecanbread/message/66445 http://pecanbread.com/new/temporarysymptoms.html It depends on each person how long the die off lasts - there is no set answer (severity of gut damage, what they eat etc.). Epsom salt baths&/or activated charcaol can help help speed it up and ease he symptoms. <<when do i know to add foods? should the stool be my guide, i'm a bit confused because> the book seems to rely on that but if she is having behavioral issues should i go slower?>> If stools are good and the new foods do not cause negative behavioural symptoms continue to add new foods. It is still best to add new foods one at a time, starting with a small amount so you can guage any reactions to them. << also, based on the info i've given, when > should i add the yogurt? i really want to, but since her gut is so > leaky i'm afraid to do anything!>> Since she has been CF for a while you may want to wait a while longer - a couple of weeks at least until she is stablilized on the diet. Then start with a small amount since it will cause more die off. 1/8-1/4 tsp of yogurt Sheila, SCD Feb. 2001, UC 23 yrs, mom of and
