Guest guest
Hi SCD pals, I thought I would write this short article for you because I often see people struggling with this one: Candida and the Banana Dilemma There are many of you that are fearing the Banana due to fears about it feeding Candida. I have done research into the dilemma to see why Dr. Haas would have been feeding Banana's to children to save them from CD in the 30's. and to discover why Elaine says that it is OK to eat this very sweet food during the healing process of the SCDiet TM. This is what I found out in the book: " Digestive Wellness " By Dr. Lipski, Ph.D., CCN and S. Bland, Ph.D. Page 69-70. In the Chapter; " Candida: The Masquerader " : " Candida is found in nearly everyone, and in small amounts it is compatible with good health. Candida is usually controlled by friendly flora, our immune systems, and intestinal pH. When the bacteria that normally balance candida are killed, it causes what's commonly known as yeast infection...........Candida can also colonize in the digestive tract, causing havoc everywhere in the body. Candida colonies produce powerful toxins that are absorbed into the bloodstream and affect our immune system, hormone balance, and thought processes. The most common symptoms are abdominal bloating, anxiety, constipation or diarrhea (or both), depression, environmental sensitivities, fatigue, feeling worse on damp or muggy days or in mold places, food sensitivities, fuzzy thinking, insomnia, low blood sugar, mood swings, premenstrual syndrome, recurring vaginal or bladder infections, ringing in the ears, and sensitivities to perfume, cigarettes, or fabric orders. " " .....Although these symptoms are the most prevalent, candida has many faces and many types of symptoms can occur......American Physicians recognize candida in many forms, but in general they have been unwilling to recognize it in systemic form. For those who do it is a common diagnosis.....Dr. Hoffer states that one-third of the world's populations is affected by candidiasis......Candida are like bullies that push their way into the intestinal lining, destroying cells and brush borders (villi)...Greater numbers of candida produce greater amounts of toxins, which further irritate the break down the intestinal lining. This damage allows macromolecules of partially digested food to pass through. The macromolecules are the perfect size for antibodies to respond to. Your immune system then goes on alert for these specific foods so the next time you eat them, your antibodies will be waiting. The net result is increased sensitivity to foods and other food substances and the environment....Many, many therapeutic programs are available for people to follow to rid themselves of candida. " Here are the things they say knock out the friendly flora that cause Candida to THRIVE and become over populated and pathogenic (the list is likely bigger): a.. antibiotics b.. birth control pills, c.. steroid medications, d.. consumption of high starch and sugar diets The SCDiet TM has been designed to starve out the bad gut flora, including Candida, while allowing the intestinal lining to heal and feed the person adequately and with the best nutrition. Candida starves out rather fast. We are told to follow SCD by the book and to not stray or cheat. Eating introductory diet, Cutting down our honey and watering down our juice at first. Then slowly introducing new foods that are easy to digest. As you know, many of us come sensitive to many foods. Now you know you know why. Banana sometimes being one of them. Likely because the intestines are so damaged that large macromolecules of partially digested banana and other foods are slipping through to the blood stream and the immune system is responding to. The yeast has caused " celiac " like symptoms by mowing down the brush borders/villi adding to this vicious cycle. Review the Celiac Story in Elaine's book. This is why Elaine G explains (with good reference) that it is the starch and sugar that keeps us sick and not JUST GLUTEN. This " leaky damaged/ " celiac " like/ gut " causes adverse food intolerance like reactions in the beginning. This is why she tells us to introduce foods slowly, but not to give up on them if we are reacting; unless the reaction is anaphylaxis and deadly. If it is a typical food intolerance like reaction this is not " true allergy " and we should try again. If the banana is one of these foods by all means do not eat it until you can. Like Elaine suggests, introduce it later after the intestines have healed a bit, because Candida does not touch it, nor can it ferment it, or thrive off it's sugars. Here is why, (same doctors and book) pg 70: " ....bananas are loaded with fructooligosaccharids, which feed lactobacillus and bifidobacteria but not candida. " Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria are Good Gut Bugs! WE want to help them to thrive. They help to control our yeasty beasties. So guys.....lets enjoy our bananas and still starve out the yeasts....and feed the good gut bugs! Dr. Haas's original SCDiet was called the Banana Diet! The Celiac Babies are now remembered as the " Banana Babies " , this is why. This is why Elaine trusted this wonderful food! Hope this helped to explain things a bit and calm down the confusion and fears around the banana and other SCD foods. God Bless all, Antoinette and all my Silly Yaks at the Zoooooo! 2/
