Guest guest
Okay...so sorry for this post. I did read all the links in the past to yogurt machines, but since the latest buzz on here about specific temperature and whatnot, I would like to know WHAT IS THE VERY BEST YOGURT MAKER ON THE MARKET, regardless of price? Where can I get a professional yogurt maker that does exactly what we want it to do? Does this product even exist? I would not like to have to use heating blankets and ovens, etc...is there such a thing out there? If not, with the rise in autism someone would be wise to manufacture one just for SCD dieters!! I have 2 boys with autism and have been on the diet for nearly 2 years minus the yogurt. I think it is time for us to start this and I am panicked that I am not going to do it right! I really want this to work, no expense spared. Please help? Thank you all for your input! Guest guest
Hi Rhonda, I use a dehydrator and I can adjust the temperature to whatever degree I want. I first try with water, wait several hours and then adjust, If I put it on F 100 and I get F 90, then I see that I need to set it to a temperature that is F10 more than the temperature needed. You only need to this test with water once On my dehydrator I need to put it on F 120 in order to get F105. I am sure that in other models you might use a different temperature. You are the boss and with a thermometer you can get exactly the temperature that you want. I also use my dehydrator for drying fruits and veggies. They come out delicious!!! I use a rack above the yogurt and dry the fruits at the same time that I make the yogurt. We make 8 quarts of yogurt at the same time and use glass canning jars. Some folks use the dehydrator to make meringues or beef jerkies. Please be aware that dried fruits are an advanced food. I use the Excalibur model. I have seen cheaper dehydrators on Amazon and welcome feedback about them. Mimi > Okay...so sorry for this post. Guest guest
I, too, want to tell Rhonda that her best bet is a dehydrator because once the temperature is adjusted to your satisfaction, you can trust that it will remain in that temperature range. Dehydrators, unlike the yogurt makers, are designed to be used 24+ hours. I also have an Excaliber. But for me, getting the correct temperature seems to be a bit more complicated than Mimi described. There is a dial for the temperature and not every degree is marked. The markings are at 85, 95, 105, 115, etc. Other temps are in the wide unmarked arc in the middle between marks and you have to just guess where they are. The dial indicator is not pointed. It is as thick as my little finger and has a big fat dot on it, as if that helps! Usually the adjustments I need to make are tiny and it is hard to move the dial such a small amount accurately, so we go too high, too low, too high too low. Rhonda, if there is any dehydrator model out there with a digital temperature control, I say get that one. Some other things you need to know about making yogurt in the dehydrator: The dehydrator does not keep a steady temperature. It is like an electric frying pan--when it gets to the set temp, it stops heating for a while. Then when it drops to some lower temp it starts up again. So I watch for a while to see what the swings are so that I don't have it going above or below recommended temperatures. This is different for me every time! Depending on how I position the dehydrator on the counter, the swings in temp can be wider or narrower. Why don't I just find a good spot and leave it? Because the dehydrator takes up too much counter space and when I am not using it, I want to push it back under the cupboards. I cannot leave it pushed back when I use it because the temperature dial is on top way in the back and cannot be seen when pushed back on the counter. If you can find a model where the temperature control is in a spot where you can see it more easily, get that one! , mom to
