Dear Antoinette, The funny thing is that when my son is eating 24-hour yogurt

with honey, I've often gotten the intuitive feeling that he is flashing back to

mother's milk experience -- nourishing, sweet, totally healthy, digestible.

Take care,

I cried when I read this. We can't blame ourselves. IT is exhausting!

But know what you mean. But truly I believe that the autism and LKS

was just waiting and got worse...it was not caused by your weaning.

Please know this!

My duaghter's health issues got WAY worse when I tried ot wean. But

this is when we found that the underlying cause was Mitochondrial in

orgin. When they spoke of G TUBE and IV port....I nursed and

nursed...and thank God was able to bring my milk back with the help

of my lactation consultant and La Leche that has truly SAVED our

daughter...not me. If it was for me...she would be weanted. I now

know better. But did not always.

This SET BACK was caused by just cutting back. I did not want to be

100% weaned every, just needed a break. I thought I could supplement

with " just " SCD foods. But the SCDiet is the next best thing to my

human milk. But we can only do what we can. MOST babies in Amerca

don't get nursed for more than a few months. So you did much better

than average. A+ in my book!

Thank God you are feeding your son SCD! You are a GOOD MOM! It will

pay off! IT did for us. She doesn't even need her seisure meds, and

I am certain that it is becasue of SCD! She just recently started to

POINT and wave! She never did this before. But SCD helped her

to " talk " , interact more typical for her age and stoped her

deleriums. Heck just months into SCD we saw improvement!

10 times a day nursing her...is NUTS. But we will make it. It is

part of my life by now. So I just need to remember that she is

my " special " kid and be graeful that I can do this for her. Her

autism will get worse when she does not nurse on demand.

Takikng better care of myself might help. I regret this, all too

often. My other children are taxing also. My poor husband...thank

God he understands. He is always up on the shelf. He helps much.

But our marriage is still stressed. ON the weekends he lets me

sleep.

We can not beat up on ourselves! WE are all doing the best we can

here. MOST of us WINGING IT! " We " will make it! " We " meaning all

of us SCD mommies of these wonderful kids!

Extended nursing is every mom's secret weapon IMO. I never needed to take my

kids to the ped when they were sick. I just nursed them until they were better.

That's why I have 3 kids age 3-8 yet have never given an antibiotic. According

to a (now retired) PhD anthropoligist at Texas A&M (who is also a LLL), human

beings were meant to be breast-fed for the first 3-7 years of their lives.

That's normal healthy kids, not just kids with a chronic health condition.

Antionette -- are you also tandem nursing your youngest?

This actually brings up an SCD question that I have asked before, but nobody

answered...

If human's were intended to receive breastmilk for the first 3-7 years, they

were intended to receive the bifidus strains for that long as well. So of

course my question is why no bifidus for the young-uns? I really need to know

this since my son has lacto overgrowth and I understand the lacto species are

canibalistic and can overtake the flora if allowed.

True, my daughter who was also nursed two and a half years never had an ear

infection, has only had antibiotics once or twice but only after we were forced

to vaccinate her when she was 8 years old when we moved back to the US from

Canada, for the school system. And then she developed migraines for the first

time in her life, now resolved, but vaccinations are a whole other, off topic

story. Yes, she was the healthiest kid around, and very advanced

developmentally too, now in the gifted program at school, all advanced classes,

and gets straight As. But i can't get her to eat SCD diet, she is unfortunately

addicted to wheat and sugar. Virya and I eat most of the same things, although

I'm not as strict since I don't actually have symptoms I'm treating -- except

toe fungus! :-)

By the way, the IVIG is really helping my son talk more -- he's gone from

mainly 1-syllable utterances to mainly 2-3 syllables, which really helps us

understand more words, lots more spontaneous talking and interacting, up to

6-syllable combinations and flexibly combining words in sentences. We saw the

neurologist yesterday and we are going to continue the infusions, we just have

to see how long the treatment lasts and what the optimal timing is. Previous

experience says every 3 weeks but the neuro said sometimes it can be as much as

every 6 weeks, and you have to balance spending several days at a time having

the infusion with the benefits. We are going to do home nursing services if we

can to minimize the disruption and expense. I believe IVIG is very

complimentary with SCD and the treatments may last longer because we are doing

SCD. Previously the treatments lasted 3 weeks with him, but I'm hoping they may

last longer due to SCD.

We do IVIG every 3 weeks (home infusions too). I hope you'll get a chance to

try HBOT too -- that really increased my son's gains.
