Guest guest
We've been doing scd with our 8yo son with severe uc since November, and I'm thrilled to report that he is now weaned off of prednisolone completely after 7 months on the med. He's having one or two formed mvts a day, no blood thank goodness, and is bouncing back from all of the difficult side effects of the drugs and the debilitating months of bloody diarrhea. Now that he is so much better, thank goodness, we're thinking about trying scd for our older son, who just turned 12. He developed severe ocd when he was 7, seemingly overnight. He also has gross motor and fine motor delays, and has been labeled with all sorts of various things over the years although most drs find him hard to classify. He is a lovely, loving, bright and fun young man, but struggles with ocd, which is in an upswing just now, and with attention issues and social difficulties. He has not had any obvious gastrointestinal troubles. He has been gluten-free and diary free since he was a toddler, with occasional lapses. Have any of you had any experience using scd with kids who have ocd? If so, has it helped? And if we try this, do you have any suggestions about how to help him adjust to the diet? Food is one of his main pleasures, and he sees how restricted his brother's diet is and is very resistant to the idea of trying scd. Thanks in advance for any responses. , mom to 8yo ds with uc since 4/05, scd since 11/06. 2000 mg Azulfidine, Culturelle, Vitamin D, folic acid, fish oil, Chinese herbs, acupuncture, homeopathy. And to 12 yo ds with ocd since 4/03.
Guest guest
I don't have an answer for you but make sure you are aware of the OCD/PANDAS connection. OCD out of nowhere is often pediatric auto-immune neuropsychological disorder associated with strep (or something close to that) aka PANDAS. You can learn about it on the NIH website. - julieb801 wrote: We've been doing scd with our 8yo son with severe uc since November, and I'm thrilled to report that he is now weaned off of prednisolone completely after 7 months on the med. Guest guest
I'd like to try SCD on my 12yo dd who has OCD, so far she is only GF. Maybe an approach that would work would be to gradually change his diet to SCD. My 12yo is determined not to do meds so is committed to stay GF. Since you're already doing SCD with your youngest, try it with the older one. Get some good cookbooks too for variety, or download some of the great recipes from the various websites (check the links from the group website). Kids with autism often have an OCD component so I think it would help. As an aside, given that his OCD was sudden onset, have you looked into PANDAS? (pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorder associated with strep) Apparently strep infections can trigger OCD in some children. Just a thought. Even though he doesn't have obvious gastro issues, I'm convinced that SCD is a good diet for anyone, child or adult, who is suffering from psychological or psychiatric issues. SCD has cured my long- standing depression. Guest guest
Far be it from me to discourage anybody from trying SCD. My 13yo HFA daughter and family have been on it for 5.5 years and feel it's one of the best things that we ever did for a number of reasons. Among the reasons (beyond our incredibly healthy eating) are that it cured her gut problems in three weeks and definately, substantially improved her level of functioning within 6 months. However, she still struggles enormously with classic OCD. In other words, SCD did not make an impact on OCD for her. But every person is different. My 9yo daughter (quirky, anxious unusual kid but not diagnosably ASD) also has OCD that, thanks or not to SCD, has dwindled over the years and, while OCD still exists for her, it is quite manageable. Guest guest
Thanks to everyone who responded -- your comments are very helpful as we figure this out. When our son was diagnosed with OCD he was tested for strep because the onset was so sudden, but it was negative. The neurologist said that some believe that it may not just be strep, that other infections can trigger ocd. Or that it could just have occurred without an infection. We won't ever know. But it may be worth trying SCD to help him. Of course as soon as I wrote how well our younger son with uc is doing, the next morning we noticed some blood in his stool again, after a really good month of no blood. It made us really worried, and made him sad, even though it is just a tiny bit. When this happens is it helpful to go back to the intro diet (as much as he will hate to do that)? His diet is already pretty limited. Here's what he eats: Chicken, roasted or baked salmon and cod, baked green beans, cooked very well carrots, also cooked very well butternut squash pears and raspberries cooked as sauce, seeds removed homemade raspberry jello, no seeds honey olive oil coconut oil lemon juice cilantro dill oregano onions garlic very rarely mixed vegetables with broccoli and cauliflower, well cooked Thanks for your suggestions. Guest guest
A lot of times people do find it helpful to go back to the intro diet for a couple of days to get things back on track after a st back. Guest guest
Hi , << Of course as soon as I wrote how well our younger son with uc is doing, the next morning we noticed some blood in his stool again, after a really good month of no blood. It made us really worried, and made him sad, even though it is just a tiny bit.>> How long ago did he finish the prednisolone? Has he been having regular bm's? Trophies? Constipation etc..? If the wean off the steroid was recent that may be why you were experiencing trouble. While on steroids many people are able to eat a large variety of foods. (I always joked to DH that on prednisone I could eat rocks with no problems) as the person weans on the steroids and gets to low doses less complex food may be tolerated for a period until the body produces enough of its own hormones. << When this happens is it helpful to go back to the intro diet (as much as he will hate to do that)? After that onion, garlic. Then cilantro and dill. You could either go back to the intro and add the foods back in (if the blood continues or worsend you may want to do this) or cut out the above 6 likely culprits and very slowly add them back in. I'd wait a while longer on the brocc and cauliflower because they can be pretty troublsome for those with bowel issues (they are in the cabbage family). If you do pull back to easier to digest foods it will really help you to keep a detailed food log that tracks when you introduced food and his reaction to it - especially the first weeks early months off the steroids.
