Guest guest
We recently went back to SCD and have been on it about 1 month. We don't do any dairy besides SCD yogurt and cultured and/or raw butter, no nuts, no honey, extremely little fruit. We have kind of been going backwards, cutting out foods and working our way towards the intro diet. Basically right now my son can eat SCD yogurt, meat/fish, fats, eggs, winter squash, zucchini, green beans, cooked onions and that is about it. He can't tolerate many carbs at all, and I don't think he tolerates carrots well either. Until starting the SCD yogurt and upping the amount of digestive enzymes he takes (Zyme Prime) he suffered from constant diarrhea and very loose stools. We are now at about 50-80% firm with the stools and his behavior is slowly improving. I am hopeful that doing the intro will really help him keep progressing. Is it okay to do the intro diet using winter squash instead of carrots? Also since we are already doing SCD yogurt successfully can we keep that and cultured butter in the intro diet? The butter seems very important to him (keeping the amount of fats he eats up helps compensate for the fact that he can't tolerate many carbs). In fact, the raw butter we get from a nearby farm seems to be magic for him. We saw another big jump in improvement once we added that in. Also, are white and purple grape juice the only allowed juices on the intro? What do those of you with severe salicylate intolerance do? The jello has been very useful to us since the kids need a quick snack and can't eat fresh fruit anymore, but we have been using pomengranet which seems to be the only juice I can find so far that doesn't make them bonkers. Is it okay to keep doing the pomengranet juice on the intro or should we try white grape? Thanks in advance for your help. I am so glad that this group is here. I look forward to the day when I can be the one giving out advice. :-) K Hashi's, Fibro, CFS, copper overload, adrenal fatigue etc etc (mostly healed!!!) kids: son Rhowan 5 yrs old, chronic diarrhea/loose stools, ADHD, salicylate intolerance; daughter Willow 6.5 yrs old, mild GI issues, salicylate intolerance SCD take two 1 month (about to redo the intro diet)
Guest guest
You can use winter squash instead of carrots. Apple cider is also allowed on the intro diet, but I think that is high in silicilates, too. I don't see why you could continue to just use the pommegrant juice instead of the grape, but Sheila would better be able to advise on that one. What state do you live in? I've been trying to find raw butter forever, and haven't found it yet. Meleah About to redo the intro diet and have questions..... We recently went back to SCD and have been on it about 1 month. He can't tolerate many carbs at all, and I don't think he > tolerates carrots well either.>> At the beginning carrots should be cooked until very soft (ie cooked for 4 hours in the chicken soup) and then pureed. Many think they don't tolerate carrots but aren't cooking them long enough. What I used to do is cook a huge pot of chicken soup with carrots. Then freeze the carrots in appropriate portions. Then as needed thaw and puree them (with either water or chicken broth). << Until starting the SCD yogurt and > upping the amount of digestive enzymes he takes (Zyme Prime) he > suffered from constant diarrhea and very loose stools. It will be a very basic and if that works for you - go for it. What will be important is to find what basic foods work for you and as you add *one* food at a time note all bowel and behavioural reactions. Foods on your list to watch reactions for are the green beans and onions. (Green beans are fibrous and onions have natural inulin) << Also since we are already doing SCD yogurt successfully can > we keep that and cultured butter in the intro diet? In fact,> the raw butter we get from a nearby farm seems to be magic for him. We> saw another big jump in improvement once we added that in.>> Butter isn't on the intro but like I wrote above it will be a very basic diet that will help you figure out what he reacts to. So if the butter helps him you keep giving it to him. A little yogurt is included in the original " Intro diet " , so that is fine (I am glad to hear it is helping him). << Also, are white and purple grape juice the only allowed juices on the intro? What do those of you with severe salicylate intolerance do?>> Apple cider is also on the intro. I recently suggested for those with salicylate problems to make their own apple juice at home by using double peeled apples. I think some varieties of apples are lesser in salicylates than others. << The > jello has been very useful to us since the kids need a quick snack and> can't eat fresh fruit anymore, but we have been using pomengranet> which seems to be the only juice I can find so far that doesn't make> them bonkers. Guest guest
Hi Meleah, Have you considered making your own butter? I once made my own cultured butter. Not to hard to do if you have a food processor. Are you dairy free these days? Sheila I've been trying to find raw butter forever, and haven't found it yet. Guest guest
Thanks Meleah and Sheila! I think we are going to do the actual strict intro for 2 days and then transition into a basic diet that adds some raw/cultured butter and winter squash for a few more days, then start reintroducing foods VERY slowly. I'm going to do a small test of white grape juice and see how they react before making a decision on what to use in the jello on the intro. thanks again for your help. We'll be starting our intro diet on Monday!!!!! Meleah, I'm in Ohio. I get my butter from a local farmer that sells at a farmer's market in downtown Dayton. I feel the raw grassfed butter is so magical because of the extra nutrients (X factor/vitamin K2, etc etc) that it contains. K Hashi's, Fibro, CFS, copper overload, adrenal fatigue (mostly healed!!!) Guest guest
I've never thought of making my own butter. Can you give me instructions? I'd still have to get raw milk out-of-state. It isn't legal to sell it in our state, but the state just 30 minutes away allows it. I'd probably have to drive an hour to get the raw milk. I'd love instructions. iel is fine with dairy. Guest guest
It isn't legal in our state either. We do a cow share program. We pay a " boarding fee " for our share of the cow and then we are entitled to some of the milk/butter and since we " own " part of the cow we can decide whether to consume the products raw or not. Guest guest
Our cow share provides us with raw butter already made, so I don't have a recipe for it. Guest guest
Hi , <<Could I get the recipe too for how to make the butter? I do a cow share also.>> I thought I posted it the other day, but I think my computer ate it (computer problems) I use the recipe at this link: http://webexhibits.org/butter/doityourself.html To culture the cream I used yogurt starter and fermented at room temperature for about 12 hours I cleaned the butter a lot. It is important to store it properly. I didn't add salt but may the next time. Guest guest
I used organic cream. It is the only stuff I can find without additives. It was delicious Sheila Re: About to redo the intro diet and have questions... .. Hi , <<Could I get the recipe too for how to make the butter?
