Guest guest
Ok, Kids! This has really set off a light bulb over my head! I was just dx with diabetes in March, and I'm on Amaryl 4mg twice a day. Ok, here is the thing, several times I've been driving, or walking in the store or something and all of the sudden I start getting " woozy " or kinda light headed and I feel like the room is starting to go black, but in an odd kinda way, like its all folding in on me or something. I just can't seem to discribe it. And at first I didn't know what the heck was going on, but after reading these post, I'm beginning to wonder if my blood sugar was too low????????? I've even had to have my daughter drive for me, and her licenses is suspended, but its safer for her to get us home then me when I'm in that kind of shape, ya know? I have told her I thought it was because of my bs, but not sure. Last week we had to go to her new college for an all day orentation and she made me give her the glucose tablets they gave me before I left the hospital in March in case I started feeling " woozy " . I did ok, that day, but now I'm kinda scared to even drive by myself. I have never in my life felt like I do when this happens, and I want to do anything & everything to prevent it, so any help you can give me is super- duperly appreciated! Thanks alot! Lots of hugs, ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~``

Guest guest
Hey Mark....are you scolding me?!?!?! I do check it 3 times a day. My insurance pays for my strips & lancets, but only enough to check it that often. Sometimes I can check it & it be fine, and others it will be whacky. I do have to admit, I'm not that strick with myself to keep at it like I should. I did have a diabetes lady come visit me in the hospital with instructions, and when I left the hospital they gave me a flyer about a diabetes class for newbies, but I never felt well enough to go sit through it. I know! I know! I really need to do it! I promise to call next week & schedule it, and thanks for the lecture, its just what I needed today! lol I'm kidding, of course, I hope you know! Guest guest
all you need to do is ask your doc to write a prescription saying that you need to check your blood sugar 10 times a day or something along those lines. That way your ins will pay for the necessary supplies. You MUST check you blood sugar frequently, expecially being newly diagnosed. When my sugar falls I start feel very sleepy to the point my eyes water then I start to sweat, go very pale, my heart races, punding in my chest, my head feels very light, I cant hardly talk or even visualize. When I had the siezure and the EMTs were able to check my sugar it was at 50. I was sound asleep when I woke feeling horrible and checked it and it was 30. Go to the classes and call your doc and tell him he needs to write for more frequent testing. I dont run out of supplies and I dont test 10x a day, but I do test atleast every 2-3 hours while awake. That is the only way that you are going to learn how if feels to YOU. Hope this helps,
Guest guest
Hi : This is great advice. Thank you so much! I don't know why I didn't think to just ask him to write for it more often. I'm bad about that. I just do what they tell me, and don't ask many questions. My mom is always on me about it. But I will do it. And I will make an apt. for the diabetes classes too. I've been doing really well today about checking it! I've actually already done it 4 times. The one tiime I started to just feel like I do when I " think " its too low, and yep, it was at 59, which is low for me. So I ate a snack, and checked it an hour or so later & it was up to 101. Yeah for me! But this is great advice you gave me, thanks alot, it helps me so much! I hope you are doing well. Guest guest
hahahaha......I am scolding you.....hahaha.....I want to make sure that you are doing ok...you know me.....exercising even a little will help and also eating foods that are low on the glycemic index will help also..I have some into on the top5plus5 site on it if you are interested.....Hope you are doing ok.....I now how it is to have low BS.....I have been low quite a few times in my life...once about 10 years ago...i was sitting in our hot tub with my wife when my vision started to close in on me......I jumped up and ran into the house and stared eating tons of sugar.....I was eating it by the handful while my wife went and got my meter.....when I checked it.....it said 15......parts of my body went numb and I don't know how I stayed conscious......that Only happened the one time..but i have had my bs at 26 before also...scared the hell out of me......the problem I face now is not being able to tell when my sugars are dropping...but I learned a trick on how to fix that....I just run myself high around 200 for a week or two and then my body will react again when I get to about 70.....I am not suggesting that for anyone else.....I just know that it works for me.....take care of yourself and I hope this finds you and yours well Mark
Guest guest
I am one of those wonderful people who is not sensitive to blood sugar changes. So I check my blood sugars before I eat, and especially before I get in the car and drive. My doctor told me to really be careful about that. He said that more accidents are caused by diabetics than drunk drivers every day! That scared me into being very careful! So check your blood sugars often! I also check mine when I first wake up and before I go to bed. I aim to have mine between 140 and 160 before bed so that I won't drop to low while I am sleeping. I also keep glucose tablets with me and icing in tubes and a glucagon pen.
