Many folks on here have commented that they were not given enough

versed to compeletly sedate them. Versed is not used for or in lieu of

anesthesia. It is used along side a narcotic such as demerol for

consicious sedation. In other words the pt is alert and if you ask

them to quack like a duck they will. Versed has an amensiac affect

therefore the pts awaken and dont remember what has occured even if

they did quack like a duck. MAC, which is an acronym for Monitored

Anesthesia Control (I think, I forget). That is anesthesia used just

to the point shy of having to intubated and is the best way to

anesthetize a pt having an endoscopy or bronchoscopy, if in fact

anesthesia is needed. I hope this helps with those of ya'll deciding

on what to request when having any scoping. I have always asked for

MAC after my first one and woke up with my wrists black and blue from

being forcibly held down. I was none too pleased.

Warmly,

,

I am one that the can't handle versed...simply because I have come

to too many times during a procedure, and it simply isn't a pretty

site, not to mention uncomfortable..nothing worse than waking up

with instruments down your throat, trying to gag, and being forced

down even by the head as well as the arms..

Thank goodness that the 2 places I am more than likely to only ever

have a scope now only use Diprovan which I am guessing is the MAC

you describe. It is egg based and is almost (well, they circle

general anaesthesia on the papers I sign)general anaesthetic. And it

even allows you to wake up less tired as such, I guess because they

don't need to give you the pain medicine along with it.

The last few Versed & Fentanyl or Demerol scopes I've had have had

after effects of severe projectile vomiting courtesy of the pain

medicine...
