Hey Karyn:

Thanks for writing to me and sending me this great info! It has

really helped me. You know, way back in 95 Doc Lehman told me that I

would eventually become diabetic due to the chronic pancreatitis,

but I never really thought I would happen. Expecially since the

years started ticking by. But, here again, he was right! What a

guy! I hope you are doing well. And thanks again for all your help!

Lots of Hugs,

You wrote, " The one time I started to just feel like I do when

I " think " its too low, and yep, it was at 59, which is low for me.

So I ate a snack, and checked it an hour or so later & it was up to

101. " I am glad that your sugar responded well and went to a nice

101. It couldn't be much more perfect!

I thought would share the American Diabetes Association (ADA)

recommendations for treating low BS. They state that you should take

15 carbs and recheck you blood sugar in 15 minutes. That way you

will be able to document what occurred and be able to establish

your correction ratio. The other thing, more importantly, is that

you will be more likely to avoid overcorrection and going too high,

then necessitating insulin. Of course, if your BS is below 50 then

you may want to take 30 carbs, wait 15 minutes, recheck your sugar.

Eventually you will know your correction ratio and will be able to

treat lows in that manner. For instance, I have hypoglycemia

unawareness, noticing low BS at ~44. I now know that it takes 55

carbs to bring my BS to 110. There really is not anything that

works for one person that will exactly work for another. And, what

works for me one day, usually does not the next.
