Guest guest
OK, I've read the book, reviewed the website(s) and I'm still a bit confused. I printed off the stages of the diet as I think I will need to live by the chart until I truly get the hang of this. However, in the stages, I don't see if/when to introduce things like honey, yogurt, goat cheese, vitamins and probiotics? I'm hoping the honey is pretty early since an occasional sweet treat would probably do a lot for morale. On the other hand, we are coming to this diet from GFCF b/c we continue to struggle with yeast and clostridia. I certainly don't want to add too much honey too soon for fear of feeding yeast and bacteria nor do I want to undo any of the healing and hard work. Unlike GFCF, this diet seems unforgiving of mistakes so I just keep checking and rechecking everything. We are starting dairy free so the honey and yogurt are not included in the Intro for us. I know all children are different but just for a frame of reference, when can I start trying to introduce these things? I'd like to write it in to my chart for future frame of reference. Thanks in advance. Guest guest
Hi, , Honey is allowed on the intro diet. Technically, so is yogurt, but people coming from CF diets are advised to wait 3 or 4 months before introducing legal dairy so that the initial die off from this diet is not confused with a reaction to casein. After the intro diet, you can add your legal vitamins and legal probiotics one at a time like foods to watch for reactions. , mom to
Guest guest
Thanks . So you can have honey even though it is not listed on the pecanbread version of the intro diet? I know it is listed in BTCV, but thought it was different for ASD kids. Will adding honey in the intro lessen the effect of killing all the yeast and bacteria we're trying to get rid of? -- julie46250 wrote: Hi, , Honey is allowed on the intro diet. Guest guest
Leaving out dairy (butter, yogurt, DCC, cheese) are the only things different for kids on the autism spectrum. Honey is fine. You can search the old messages on the list for posts about honey and find some good explanations for why honey is ok. Even so, some folks with very severe yeast problems must restrict honey. After reading the old posts, if you are still concerned that the honey would be a problem for your child, try (as a first step) using half the amount of honey that a recipe calls for. , mom to
Guest guest
Thank again . I have already read about why honey is OK. I think my confusion is just with how firm the pecanbread Intro diet suggestions are. I kind of assumed that if it was OK for the Intro, it would be listed? This might be a dumb question, but if everything is basically the same as the Intro diet in BTVC except for dairy, then why not just use that book, simply eliminate dairy, and refer to the BTVC website. I mean if it's just about the dairy, why pecanbread? I guess I'm looking for a black and white diet plan in a diet that's not black and white. Perhaps I am complicating things more than need be. I just don't want to do all this hard work and restrict my families diet (even more than it already is), then find out I am doing something wrong and it was all for nothing. That's why I keep hounding everyone with my questions. FYI-I'm really not a complete idiot...seriously. I just really want to get it right. -- : --------------------------------- Be a better Globetrotter. Get better travel answers from someone who knows. Yahoo! Answers - Check it out. Guest guest
, I understand your desire to do things right, so I will bow out now and let a moderator answer your question. My personal opinion is that honey slipped through the cracks when the webpage was made and that the website is there to deal with common questions that parents who start the diet have. Guest guest
Thanks again . I hope I didn't offend you with my questions. I'm just frustrated with myself b/c everyone seems to be able to effectively interpret the diet but me. I certainly appreciate all of your answers and you are probably right about honey slipping through the cracks. Thanks so much for taking the time to respond. I truly appreciate it. -- julie46250 wrote: , I understand your desire to do things right, so I will bow out now and let a moderator answer your question. For example the intro diet uses honey in the cheesecake if you have yeast issues you should probably reduce the honey by least 75%.
