Guest guest
Hello- We are brand new to SCD, day 3 to be exact. I have two sons on the autistic spectrum who initially responded well to GFCF, then regressed, so after reading about SCD am anxious to give it a try. We started on Sunday with the intro diet listed on pecanbread. One son (11 yrs old, PDD-NOS)has done great, after some intial fussing and fit-throwing gave in and has been eating the meats and diluted grape juice from the intro. Today after 2 days of intro he went on to eat some of the ripe banana. My other son (9 yrs, Autism)however is a different story! And he is where my concerns lie: He refused to eat anything until the evening of the second day when he ate a small amount of roasted chicken and now again has not eaten anything since. He refuses the diluted juices as well(in any form: popsicles, jello, etc), so we have been making him take some water throughout the day just to keep some kind of fluids going in. He has been vomiting all day today and has huge dark circles under both eyes to the point it looks like two black eyes. He is not running fever, and no one else is sick, so I am pretty sure the vomiting is related to the dietary changes. I have read the die-off symptoms and realize this could be the cause. (But it also says vomiting is rare!) We are not doing chelation or probiotics or any other intervention, just the dietary change and I did take 2-3 weeks to try " weaning " them off a lot of their typical sugar/starch foods. What do I do??? My son literally looks like death!! He is used to drinking fruit punch type drinks. Can I try giving him homemade lemonade with honey this early on?? I know other children went days without eating, but were they at least taking the fluids and not vomiting?? Any advice, suggestions, or even just moral support would be SOOO appreciated! I am very worried about him and do NOT want to end up in the hospital with dehydration where I am sure the general consensus among the docs would be " his crazy momma did this to him! " Also, Regarding the suggested remedies on pecanbread we are trying the epsom salt baths. I have not tried the charcoal capsules as I really do not know how in the world I would get them in him??? Again any advice at all would be so very appreciated! Thanks- Sheri mom to Cody,11yo PDD-NOS & ,9yo ASD SCD 3 days
Guest guest
Sheri, Welcome to the group. This does sound like die off symptoms. You can give him some homemade lemonade(freshly squeezed lemon juice, water, and honey) to get fluids in him. It is not uncommong for kids to refuse to eat when their diet is completely changed, and there is no longer food available that will feed the cravings of all of that yeast. You can buy activated charcoal in a powdered form that has no other ingredients. Go to your local pharmacy, and ask them to show you where it is on the shelf. They should carry capsule and powder forms. While vomitting doesn't seem to be very common, it does happen as well. I would not be alarmed at this point, but you do have to keep pushing the fluids in him. He is technically past the intro diet now, so you can give him water, diluted legal juice that are store bought, or home juiced juices. Keep us posted. Guest guest
Hi Sheri. I just wanted to share that both myself and my son vomitted during our recoveries (though at different periods of time). When it happened to me I was very ill for about 18 hours. I threw up the most horrible yeasty looking stuff. No one else got sick so I am pretty sure it was die off related. When it happened to my son, he was just very fatigued, threw up some yeasty looking stuff once or twice, and then was fine. K Hashi's, Fibro, CFS, yeast/candida, copper overload, adrenal fatigue (mostly healed!!!) kids: son Rhowan 5 yrs old, chronic diarrhea/loose stools, candida/yeast, ADHD, salicylate intolerance; daughter Willow 6.5 yrs old, mild GI issues, salicylate intolerance started SCD June 2006, went slightly off for a while, now back on SCD 1 month, today is DAY THREE of our intro diet > > Hello- > We are brand new to SCD, day 3 to be exact. Guest guest
This sounds like my daughter's reaction. She vomited for three days, had the dark circles under her eyes, etc. We were scared to death, but she started getting better soon after that. Be encouraged; it won't last forever. Guest guest
I'd like to emphasize that I'm not an expert on this, so please listen to others on the list who are more experienced, but I can share that for my 16-year-old son who has autism, I started with a wide range of foods for him, did not follow the exact intro stages, and still have had good results -- but that's just for him. But I'm thinking if you are really worried about your son, why not try a few of the slightly more advanced legal foods if he would find them appetizing? The only food my son still can't handle without diarrhea is nut flour. Surprisingly, he's fine with whole nuts that he chews, but not with nut flour. I've gotten quite good at making substitute recipes of foods he likes with legal ingredients. There are many appetizing recipes and so many different foods on the legal lists. I hope you will be able to tempt your son to eat and drink. I believe that even with my more gradual approach, my son still had die off, mainly in the form of diarrhea and some very odd yeasty looking stools. He's mainly over the die off now though, and someday when we are both ready, I may do the intro diet with him just to see what happens and whether we can make even more improvements. Good luck with it. mother of Virya, age 16, autism and LKS Kuykendall wrote: Hi Sheri.
