Guest guest
Hi listmates, This is from the website at http://pecanbread.com/new/yogurt1.html " FAQ for Goat Yogurt. When am I ready to start the yogurt? " When the initial die off reaction to SCD has subsided and things are stable so that you can gauge the reaction to the yogurt. This delay is only for children who were casein free prior to SCD. Children who were eating dairy before SCD can start consuming the yogurt right away.... " Years ago some thought that it might be best to wait a while (even months) before starting yogurt. In the years to follow we have noted that the yogurt is very well tolerated after some healing occurs and can actively help heal the gut. It is best to wait until die off symptoms either stop or level off. Also if there are severe bowel problems once improvements are seen they are often able to start with the tiny portions of SCD yogurt and gradually increase it. Waiting for the die off to subside allows people starting yogurt to note what a die off reaction is like (which will likely happen with the introduction of yogurt) and not confuse any die off reactions with intolerance of yogurt. The remainder of the " Yogurt " portion of the website is very important reading for any who are starting/or are nervous about starting yogurt. I wanted to clear up any confusion about starting dairy/yogurt on SCD since some people may be leaving the diet after a few weeks thinking it wasn't recommended that they even try dairy. These people may be missing out on one of the great things about SCD. So the options are as follows: 1. Do SCD with dairy from the beginning, 2. Wait until die off subsides and bowels improve before adding in yogurt, 3. try SCD dairy when you are comfortable with the idea of dairy products, or 4. skip dairy altogether The choice is up to you. Guest guest
Sheila, I've read all the stuff about the yogurt on the website. I understand what all you're saying. But, my question is a little different. The result for lots of ASD kids consuming casein is horrible behavior outside of any internal physical results. I know you can tell PHYSICALLY when you can tolerate it. But my question is, for our ASD kids, when they can tolerate it, should the behavioral (spacey, aggitated, out of control, bizarre) behavioral also subside? Or can that question be answered? Also, does the body eventually heal up to the point that they can tolerate milk products or are you always totally casein free? I know results vary from person to person. So, I don't necessarily want a guarantee, but a rough idea. Thanks for the info. Guest guest
Hi Bonita, <<The result for lots of ASD kids consuming casein is horrible > behavior outside of any internal physical results. But my question is, for > our ASD kids, when they can tolerate it, should the behavioral > (spacey, aggitated, out of control, bizarre) behavioral also > subside? Or can that question be answered?>> Since the casein is denatured, children who can tolerate the goat yogurt do not have behavioural reactions. However, the children will very likely have a die off reaction which if monitored closely does not " look " like intolerance. Some of the possible symptoms of intolerance are the behavioural symptoms you wrote of along with physical symptoms (stomach aches, excessive bloating etc..) . Some of the signs of die off are lethargy, rashes (as toxins leave the body), worsening GI symptoms etc.. It can be tricky for parents to distinguish between intolerance and die off. If unsure they can look for guidance on the list from old timers or new parents who've been through it. <<Also, does the body eventually heal up to the point that they can > tolerate milk products or are you always totally casein free? I > know results vary from person to person. So, I don't necessarily > want a guarantee, but a rough idea.>> The body *should* be able to heal up to the point where it is able to tolerate milk products. I know people have reported eating other illegals after healing a few years on SCD - such illegals as croissants etc.. - with no ill effects. I don't recall if any one has reported being fine with milk (and undenatured casein) or not after years of healing. Often when people get healed sufficiently they don't report back to the lists anylonger. Perhaps some of the other SCD 'veterans' (if reading this) could also comment (Carol F., Charlene etc..)?
