Are we doing it right?

I'm sure this question has been asked a trillion times, and here it

is again- Are we doing this diet properly?

My son (almost 5 and Aspergers) is often moving, singing/blabbering,

shaking his head and irritating his younger brother with his

impilsive need to grab/pinch him. He also gets frustrated and angry

very easily. It is for these reasons that we have tried the diet.

My boys have been on the diet now for 17 days. I have noticed a

general improvement in C's behaviour-less impulsive, more accepting

of change of plans, less hyper. But TODAY-oh my goodness-he is " Off

the wall " ! He is angry, stimming, hyper etc. I'm feeling really

discouraged. He did eat a LOT of yogurt and honey yesterday (it

was " sundae day " in his Kindergarten class)-that is my only

explanation.

Do you think the diet is working? I am afraid I screwed it up by not

doing the strict phase in the beginning. I misunderstood that the

strict phase (no fruit, nut bread, honey etc.) was only for those

with diahrrea. We started by eating ALL of the foods on the legal

list.

Also-my son was previously on a Casein free diet and when we started

the SCD I re-introduced the legal dairy foods ie. homemade yogurt,

cheese. etc.right away.

Can anyone give me any advice here? Should I continue doing what I'm

doing or should I start all over and do the strict very restrictive

diet for a while?

Thanks!

Alison

If he ate a lot of yogurt yesterday (more than usual?) then he is

probably going through some die off. Epsom salt baths and/or

activated charcoal may help reduce symptoms. This is most likely the

problem since he is still a newbie and likely still has 'nasties' to

clear out of his system. When possible it is best to gradually

increase the amounts of food so that the damaged gut can adjust -

this is *especially* the case with the yogurt.

Since you are already seeing improvements in his behaviour it would

seem that the diet is working for C.

It won't screw up the diet not to do the intro diet (strict phase) -

it may just take longer to clear out the harmful microbes out of his

system. It may also make it more difficult to tell if foods don't

agree with him- or not. However, if apart from the yogurt incident

at the school he is steadily seeing improvements you can continue as

you are doing - the choice is yours. You may see periodic bursts of

die off throughout the diet. Generally when this happens at regular

intervals after months of improvements it can take a short period to

get over the die off and then the improvements continue. Some

parents even report a marked increase in improvements after these

periods of die off have cleared.

Despite being casein free preSCD you have seen improvements using SCD

legal dairy. It would seem that the yogurt is helping. In the

future just try to avoid increasing the yogurt too much at a time and

only increase the yogurt gradually.
