Guest guest
Iron deficiency anemia caused by pancreatic insufficiency is not uncommon at all. With the reduction of our natural enzymes less and less of the nutrients we consume are going to be absorbed. Man made enzymes can only do so much. You see, our bodies enzymes are source specific. Each individual enzymes breaks down an individual nutrient. Sucrase breaks down sucrose, lactase breaks down lactose, fructase breaks down fructose and so on and so forth. Our bodies make a gazillion different enzymes and its impossible, insofar, for man to replicate that. that is why it is so important to make sure that we take an additional vitamin and mineral supplement. There is a great list of these on Mark's top5plus5 site. You gotta love that guy!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, before you start adding anything else to the mix make sure you discuss it with your physcian!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you are going to start taking an iron supplement there are a few things you should know. Firstly do not take iron with any diary products as it reduces the absorbtion. However, taking it with orange juice or a vitamin C supplement will increase the absorbtion. Iron supplements can cause constipation and some will have a stool softener in them. Make sure you know what kind you are taking. A lot of supplements are enteric coated. Meaning they will not break down in your stomach but in your intestine. Considereing we have pancreatic insufficiency intestinal absorbtion is not the best route for us. Some things that I do to make it easier are I dont take them on an empty stomach, if possible, and I take my oral enzymes at the same time to insure as much absorbtion as possible. I have always made a big issue out of trying to stay as strong as I possibly could. There was a very long period of time where I could tolerate no solid food and lived off of slimfast(it used soy protein which is easier for the body to assimilate), supplements and chicken noodle soup(when I could). I worked for almost a year doing just that. There were lots and lots of times when I made myself NPO gradually adding clears then fulls but real foods were out. I have lost the weight of a hollywood starlet. But I remained relatively strong and I credit that to the almost obstinate use of supplements. I hope this helps.
