Hi all,

Does anyone contact people directly to their email address from the

SCD message group? Someone sent me a direct email about peacanbread

posts and asked about a recipes. Says he's a father of a 4 yr old

from Macedonia (email shows from pani pani) whose name is supposedly

Goran. Can dishonest people get your email address from the group?

And do they? I figured they would post something on the message group

before they contact you directly. Makes me uncomfortable and my

husband very aggitated. What do you guys think about this?

Yes, people do contact others directly who participate on this list. Most

people offer to be contacted, or the individual asks to contact them before

doing so. He is a member of the group, however, and has posted here a couple of

times. He is fairly new to the list.

I would not worry about the people who contact you directly. They do

not actually have your address and they will not have your address

unless you reply. So if you're uncomfortable with it, just post your

answer to the list and don't reply to their individual email.

They contact you by clicking on the send email button if they read at

the group site online. I do not know how they do it if they get our

messages by email because I'm not signed up that way.

The feeling I get is that lots of people have contacted Goran

directly. I have read his posts here and on Vitamin K and he refers

to things people have told him that I never saw on either list. So I

think he's just doing what others have done.

I have contacted people directly when I thought my question was not of

interest to the listmembers in general. People have also contacted

me. Everyone I have contacted and everyone who has contacted me has

been very nice. I hope I haven't irritated anyone and don't know

about it.

and Meleah,

This is the first time it happened and he asked about recipes and I don't have

any. So, I would have thought he realized I was new and don't have any by my

posts on here. That is what concerned me. I guess it's okay.

I always use a web-based email addy for the web (not my sbcglobal name).

It's up to the individual. I can send you an invite to gmail (it has labels

and lots of space) so I like it. There's also yahoo and hotmail.com that

have free email accounts.

What do you mean they don't actually have your address? Aren't I looking at

your address right now? (below) -

Hi Bonita,

I have contacted people offlist sometimes and preface it with " I hope

you don't mind me writing you offlist... " . Others have contacted me

offlist with the same sentiment. Occasionally I will write onlist

that I will be contacting them offlist. If it is an urgent matter I

don't.

Goran joined the list about a week before you and has a 4 yr old son

with autism. He may not be familiar with netiquette.

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/pecanbread/message/67272

Some parents do chat offlist if they have similar issues, live near

each other, etc.. There are lots of options with the internet- you

can ignore his email, reply to it, tell him you prefer to respond

onlist only etc...

The idea of subscribing to the list with a free email account is a

good idea.

,

I think you are just seeing the julie46250@...

and you don't see the rest of the address.

I imagine someone could make a good guess about how to finish it, but

there are a lot of different ways it might end.

Yeah, I think it's ok. Could be a mistake and maybe he meant to post to

the group.

julie46250;

You are incorrect. Each post has the email address in the header at the

least.

For instance, the people posting in this thread:

julie46250@...

bftodd@...

rmcorner@...

RobRose@...

sheilat@...

etc.

If you are concerned about privacy you should create a throw away email

account that lacks identifying information.

I don't use the web interface as it is pathetically clunky. If you

receive individual emails they can be categorized, filter and stored

locally. Then you can search the *entire* group archives locally

instead of being brutalized through the yahoo search facility.

More details...

When I first open your e-mail, your entire address is shown in the " From " box.

When I hit reply, the entire address moves below just prior to the words

" wrote " . When the message appears in my inbox the abbreviated addy is shown

prior to the " wrote " and then my complete address appears on the " From " box.

Is this different for others?

There are two diffferent ways to read the posts on Pecanbread: the web

format and emails to your mailbox. The web format hides the emails

addresses but the emails addresses do appear on the emails inside

your mailbox.

I don't see the addresses in the " for instance " Will posted, and Mimi

has explained why. This is not an issue for me. I just want to

apologize and correct what I told Bonita. But I still don't think she

should worry about Goran.
