To SCD veterans:

My daughter was diagnosed with crohn's in Dec. 06-

did a big round of Prednisone that finished in early March. She went

on the SCD diet in Feb.07- Has been great until June 9 when she began

to have some stomach pain after dinner on and off. Saw her GI today

for a check up. He said her blood counts shows a flare up in progress

and she needs to return to a quick burst of prednisone for about 2

weeks. She also takes Pentassa, folic acid, and fish oil.

Your advice? - Is this common with this diet to have this type of

flare up? She has lost 4 pounds since March but overall feels good

just tired. Your thoughts? Encouragement?

It's not uncommon to have somewhat frequent flares during the first year of SCD.

Many see a one month, two month, three month, six month, and one year flare.

Have you returned her to the intro diet for a few days to see if it gets things

back in check? When my son seems to have issues(usually behavioral), I often

pull back to the intro diet for two to three days. Then, I follow that up with

a time of stage oneish foods to allow his body to finish healing. We can

usually proceed to our previous eating habits of SCD once he is back to normal.

It also doesn't take him as long to go back through the stages.

Is it possible that your daughter got into illegal foods without you realizing

it? My daughter used to do that a lot.

What are you feeding your son?

Are the veggies and fruit cooked, peeled and seeded?

Any manufactured foods?

Supplements?

Go back to the intro diet.

Best wishes for a quick recovery.

Hi there,

My dd has been scd for a year, since a few weeks after being dx'ed with Crohn's.

She was quite sick when diagnosed (in the hospital for a week, and on prednisone

for several months). Thankfully, she's doing great. She's had one small flare

that was controlled with Pentasa and one small one that was controlled just by

going back to the intro diet for a few days and, after that, cutting out nuts

and beans for a while.

Do you think going back to the intro diet might help? I like your dr's attitude

about " quick bursts " of prednisone, rather than long-term usage. Does you dd

take acidophilus too?

I'm sorry I don't have any great advice. Just sending you both good thoughts

and I hope this resolves quickly.

All the best,

Ellen

9 y/o dd scd since 5/06 for crohn's

When did she start the pentasa?

What is she eating?

What symptoms does she have besides the stomach pain...diarrhea,

constipation, blood in stools, increased bowel movements etc..?

Has she started any new foods, supplements, meds recently?

My hubby Adam had a couple of flare-ups in the beginning as his gut

was healing. It always took him a while to recover from prednisone. He

would be more likely to flare soon after he came off it. Adam just

stuck it through and every time he thought he might be in a flare up,

he went back to stage 1 or the intro for a few days.

He never was able to tolerate carrots or peaches, so every time we've

reintroduced those foods, he had trouble. He also flared up at the 3-

and 6-month mark as well as a few times in between. Adam's now been

SCD for 1 year and a month and is doing awesome! I think he might be

able to introduce foods more quickly now. He's always introduced foods

very slowly. Usually one new food every two weeks. If something didn't

agree with him in the beginning, then it took a week or two for his

system to get back on track. Adam hasn't seen his GI since June of

last year. Although he's flared several times, we waited to see if the

intro diet would set him right. So far, it always has.

It looks like you might be experiencing your 3 month die off. It

doesn't always happen at exactly 3 months; it's just a general guideline.

Before SCD, he was almost constantly flaring up. It seemed like the

only time he wasn't, was when he was on prednisone or eating a

different diet that was close to SCD, and even then he had trouble.

Our GI doesn't believe in this diet (yet, but I'm working on him).

He's always been too quick to push meds. Maybe we should go back, just

so our GI can see how well the diet is working for my hubby. He knows

that we want to go off the Asacol some day, but he's assured us that

as bad as Adam's gut was, that it wasn't possible.

Go back to the intro for a few days and see if it helps. Introduce

foods very slowly, increasing amounts gradually. If you go on

prednisone, be prepared to eat easy for a week or so.

As for her tiredness, is she eating a lot of beef or liver? My hubby

was real anemic for the first 6 months of the diet. If you want some

tips on increasing iron naturally, just contact me off list.

I'm not sure if you posted her food list. But you might want to do

that to see if anyone has any suggestions to try. Sometimes it can be

the simplest of things that wreck havoc on our systems.

Hopefully all this will help,

Thank you all for your support and help. My child has been very

careful about SCD foods but I know we have made some mistakes. In

addition to Pentasa, she takes fish oil, folic acid and a multi-vit

which I have noticed does have some iron in it. With this flare up

she just has stomach pain, no diarrhea She had gotton to the point of

eating and enjoying salads again but I agree should stick to soft

foods for awhile, we are back to scrambled eggs, bananas and yogurt.

Her doctor also wants her to take 2 tums a day while on Prednisone (I

found sugar free ones with sorbitol) can this also be a problem?

Yes, the sorbitol is SCD illegal.

The active ingredient is Calcium carbonate which you may be able to

find elsewhere without illegals.

If Sorbitol is SCD illegal, why is it mentioned on page 62 in the

BTVC as something that can occasionaly be used?

Occasionally means " now and then. " I keep a few Sorbees or Edas (sugarless hard

candy) in

the car. Six tiny candies have lasted three months.

I've been on SCD 7 years.

Hi " eacgetwell " ,

I must have a different edition than yours. What chapter is Sorbitol

mentioned in? Which section?

Hi:

Elevenths Printing, April 2004- Chapter 9, 3rd paragraph. It says:

" Low calorie diet foods often contain sorbitol or xylitol as

sweeteners. Ocasionally low calorie diet chewing gum or candy

containing these sweeteners may be used. However, excessive use of

these products can cause dirrhea and bloating. "

Hi Sheila,

Sorbitol is illegal according to the BTVC website:

" Sorbitol Illegal

Sorbitol, mannitol, and xylitol are all sugar alcohols and are not SCDâ„¢

legal. They fall under the category of indigestible carbs and sugars,

and so allow companies to label things 'sugar free', even though they

are providing nutrition to the bacteria that live in your digestive

tract.

However, " eacgetwell " is right. Sorbitol is mentioned in the January

2007 edition of the BTVC on pg 62: " Low calorie diet foods often

contain sorbitol or xylitol as sweeteners. Occasionally low calorie

diet chewing gum or candy containing these sweeteners may be used.

However, excessive use of these products can cause diarrhea and

bloating. "

The BTVC website has precedence over the book, in this particular

instance. So you're right Sheila, Sorbitol is illegal. Apparently

Elaine forgot to update the book on that page!

Thank you " eacgetwell " for pointing out the inconsistency!

Hi,

I'm sorry to have to ask but the website takes precendent over the book? So

we should double check the website rather than the hard copy? Just trying

to make sure I have that.

Since the sorbitol is in prednisone and she is likely taking it daily

(not occasional use) this could be contributing to her stomach pains.

Are you able to get her prednisone made without the sorbitol? Either

compounded with fructose or dextrose?

Thank you. As she went down to 5mg of prednizone this week, she was

starting to show signs of a flare up again. So I returned her today

to the intro diet and no pain tonight. I will stick with this into

diet for a few days. Thank you for your advice and support. It

really helps.
