Guest guest
Sheila, My son is still having constipation. I have tried multiple kinds of honey. I've filtered it. The honey gives him tics and some behavior problems. All the research I've done on the web seems to show that even the lowest salicylate content of honey is still hi. Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but that would explain his reactions. So, that would nix the electrolyte drink for constipation. I have started giving him pearsauce. Hope it helps! On the bread for constipation. I can try to make some with ground pecans instead of almonds since he is allergic. Do you have to toast the pecans first? How do you get pecan flour instead of pecan butter? I could give him a little bit of prune juice even though it is so high in salicylates since it works so well with smaller amounts. We are on day 4 and soon to be day 5 without a bm. I may have to order some of the No Phenol for the salicylates and try it when it comes in, but that will be a while. Then we will go through that adjustment/die off process. What is best to do? Doesn't seem the constipation gets better. If he tolerates any of the legal juices you can try adding a little of the baking soda to it (to balance electrolytes and get things moving). I suggested this previously for others unable to tolerate honey and it worked for them. Depending on the juice you'd want to balance out carbs to replace carbs in honey. If unsure let me know and i'll do the math for you. << I have started giving him pearsauce. Hope it helps! > > On the bread for constipation. Large amounts will take longer to grind increasing heat and making it more of a nut butter. You can use nut butter or nut flour in the recipes. << I could give him a little bit of prune juice even though it is so > high in salicylates since it works so well with smaller amounts.>> You also have the option of prune nectar which is concentrated juice. I think that the nut flour baked goods may get things moving without the saliccylate rx of the prunes. Let me know if pecans help. Fluids should also help with the constipation. Guest guest
Bonita, we are not on SCD yet but I think if your son has no bm in 5 days it´s an emergency, to keep all those toxines in gut is inflamatory itself no matter what diet are you on. I think diet´s anti inflamatory effect - if this is the cause of constipation - could take a bit longer and your son needs to go. If I was you I would give a try to Oxy-mag (I don´t know if it´s scd legal), it is the only thing that helped my son with constipation issues. May be it´s just a starting push. Our DAN told us it´s a paliative that helps to heal, it can be kept on long term basis if needed and it does not interfere with nutrition. Re tics I wonder if your son was tested for strep. Guest guest
Sheila, The only juice I know for sure that he can tolerate is pear juice. I think I heard that the commercial pear juices ( Gerber and Beech Nut) are illegal. I have a Champion juicer and could make my own. Since he's barely out of the intro and very sensitive, can I peel and juice the raw pears or do I have to juice it and then cook it? My juicer filters out most all of the pulp, I usually filter it additionally through nylon knee hi's or nylon panties (new and unused of course) to get the fine powdery grit out so it's super smooth. I need your help on how much baking soda to add. I really don't understand the baking soda and balancing out carbs stuff to have the same effect as the electrolyte drink. Also, what is the significance of boiling down the prune juice to nectar? Why does it need to be boiled down like that? Just curious. I really don't understand the baking soda and balancing out carbs stuff to have the same effect as the electrolyte drink.>> Boil approximately 1 quart of water and the cool it. Add about 7.5 fluid ounces of your homemade pear juice (undiluted) to a large container, add 1/4 tsp. of salt and 1/4 tsp.baking soda. Now add the cooled (boiled) water so that you have a total of 1 quart of electrolyte mix. (These amounts are approximated since you'll be making the juice at home - it depends on the amount of carbs in the juice) << Also, what is the significance of boiling down the prune juice to nectar? Guest guest
Sheila, No I haven't made the nut bread as I haven't been to the store yet to get supplies. I've got to go get some pecans. I will do that today. I assume the vinegar is just white distilled vinegar (legal). Does the source matter? I've got some Heinz vinegar. What would I use to sweeten it in the place of honey? Honey is extremely sweet? What would be the equivalent sweetener (legal) that my son could tolerate? Pears aren't terribly sweet, could the juice be boiled down thicker so not to mess up the bread batter (make it too runny) and still be sweet enough? Is there another juice that would be lower in salicylates, very sweet but legal he could use? I use plain white vinegar, sometimes legal apple cider (depending on what I am making). <<What would I use to sweeten it in the place of honey? Honey is extremely sweet? It doesn't have to be sweet it can be more like a bread or biscuit. Sheila, SCD Feb. 2001, UC 23yrs, PCOD 22yrs mom of and
