All,

What brands of supplements do you guys use for salicylate

sensitivity? I have heard of No-Phenol and that the reaction to it

can be very rough for a couple of weeks. What is your experience with

the brands you have used? My son is highly sensitive to salicylates

and we are having a horrible time with getting off the intro. He's

having terrible constipation with the die off and can't find any good

solutions to it as everything he's tried is too high in salicylates.

Please read the post I just sent in response to: " I realy would

appreciate some help " . You might find this intersting and helpful. We

did not need any thing but SCD. Up to you though.

Antoinette,

Thanks. That was an interesting. I really don't want to do the supps. It is

just getting so difficult. He keeps the constipation and all of the solutions

he's allergic to or sensitive to. Can't find any honey he can tolerate. I'm

going to try Sheila's advice and use hm pear juice to make an electrolyte drink.

I'm really hoping the same will happen with us regarding the salicylate

Antoinette,

Sorry for the multiple emails. My thumb keeps accidentally hitting the mouse

pad on my laptop.

I'm really hoping the SCD will help us with the salicylates like it did you

guys. That is originally what got me involved in the SCD. I'm am very afraid

to try the yogurt as my son is extremely sensitive to casein. He turns into a

monster with casein. I'd be willing to try it if I thought it would help, but

I'm afraid we have to wait a while.

Now finding a legal sweetener for the yogurt and breads is a task since honey is

out fro now due to salicylates.

I always welcome and appreciate any advice you have. I appreciate your

knowledge, experience and kindness.

We did not see any success at all with No Fenol. We tried it for

nearly a year and my kids remained extremely intolerant of sals, no

improvement at all. We finally stopped the No Fenol a few weeks ago on

advice from Dr. Houston that it might be contributing to my son's

loose stools.

Now that we have strictly and properly done the intro diet, my son can

FINALLY tolerate bananas (not high in sals specifically but high in

phenols, I think, and something he could NEVER tolerate before now, it

would give him his typical sal reaction). I can finally tolerate them

too! This is big news around our house!!!!! We really missed fruits in

general especially bananas!

Upon the success of the banana, I really want to test and see just how

well our sal tolerance is improving, but my son can't digest too many

foods right now and we are taking it slow in phase I, so we'll see how

the sals go once we are able to add back in more foods. My son

couldn't even tolerate homemade pear sauce, it caused loose stools to

return. :-(

Have you thought of trying legal magnesium supplements for the

constipation? That shouldn't cause sal reactions. Magnesium seems to

be helping me. I never really had any problems with constipation

before SCD but both times I've done the intro diet and early phases

I've had problems with constipation. Keeping my magnesium levels up

seems to help with that.

Legal vanilla would probably work well to flavor the yogurt. I'm not

sure how high in sals it is, but my kids who are extremely intolerant

of sals have had no problems so far with a little vanilla.

Oh yeah, just had another thought, but coconut oil used in the breads

along with some vanilla might give it a sweet enough flavor.

Isn't there a certain brand of vanilla. Most I've seen have some corn syrup in

it.

Also, what specific brand and type of magnesium do you take?

I use a brand of vanilla called Spice Island, and I can get it at Food Lion. I

believe others use a brand called Frontier, and it is typically found at health

food stores.

The one I have now is Flavorganics from a local health food store.

I've seen the Frontier brand around at health food stores as well. I

haven't found anything at our regular grocery stores that doesn't have

sugar or corn syrup in it. Digestive wellness sells it online if you

can't find it locally.

As for the magnesium, I use Kirkman's magnesium citrate powder (the

unflavored) and I believe it is legal. I am thinking of changing to

magnesium glycinate though (also available from Kirkman in a legal

form, I think) because the powder you have to disolve in hot liquid

and the glycinate is in capsules. I take 500 mg a day. My son takes

150-200 mg a day and my daughter takes 100 mg a day. My son and I

divide up the dose throughout the day, taking some in the morning,

some with snacks, and some before bed. My daughter just takes hers in

the morning and before bed.

Many come to SCDiet carbohydrate intolerant too (do to intestinal disease and

maldigestion). Even though the honey is legal, honey can be a problem for a

while for a few of us. This too should go away. Fruit juice is good for

sweetening things. Some make the muffins with apple sauce or pear sauce instead

of honey.
