Guest guest
I know some of you must be people of prayer. This is for you. We've been doing the nut diet since about the turn of the year. I've taken two weeks off from work to start this diet, in the hope that it would help with Charlie's remaining symptoms. In the 3rd and 4th day of the intro diet, I saw glimmers of what my boy might be if the veil were lifted from his eyes. And things have turned sour since then. My wife, though somewhat emotionally supportive of the diet, isn't helping much to implement it; and she seems to consider my attempt at real SCD as my experiment. I return to work on Tuesday, along with my two hour round-trip commute, with little two show from that last 10 days but evidence of failure. Pray that may boy may not be left like unpicked fruit to rot upon the vine. Pray that the fog may lift from my own mind, and that I may learn to help, not harm. Pray that my wife may may come to see, and be more receptive to this discipline. Pray that I may have some time for my little girl, whom I have sorely neglected because of the rigors of this diet. Guest guest
Hello Wayne, I'm so sorry to hear that you're having trouble implementing the diet and that your wife is unsupportive of it. Have you asked her what her reasons are for not supporting it? Does she somehow feel threatened by this change? In my experience, when people are against change, they have some sort of fear behind it. If this fear can be addressed, maybe she will become a supportive partner in this big change. It sounds like you started to see some improvement in your son. Don't give up yet. Maybe, you have added too much too soon? Did you start with the intro diet of soup and the cooked easily digestible foods? Have you already added nut flour? If you have, this would be too soon to start it. Posting what your son has eaten and how you have prepared it will help everyone see what you have done and may give us an idea of what could be done to improve the implementation. I had a very difficult time implementing the diet too. It wasn't until I joined this list that I realized what I was doing wrong. Once I figured that out, the diet worked like a miracle. I have ulcerative colitis and no longer have to take medication for it. I am free of the symptoms and getting healthier every day. Hang in there! You can do this! -- Take care, Mel SCD since Jan 2007 UC since Apr 2004
Guest guest
Wayne, I agree with Mel, please post what your son is currently eating and maybe we can help you tweak things a bit. The first time we tried SCD it didn't work for my son because we tried advanced foods too fast and weren't 100% strict. For example, we bought applesauce that claimed to be unsweetened. The tiniest amount of illegal can prevent progress! The second time around I followed advice from this group, did the intro diet strictly and am SLOWLY introducing new foods to see what my son can actually tolerate. It is slow but we are FINALLY seeing real improvement in behavior and stools. I'm sorry that your wife isn't that supportive. My husband wasn't at first, but came around after seeing the progress my son's stools have made recently. Hang in there, educate her all that you are able, and maybe she will come around. Keep posting for tips and advice, I know my family and I would never have made it this far without the support from those further along on the SCD path than we are. I'll be keeping you and your family in my thoughts..... K in Dayton, Ohio Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, Fibro, CFS, yeast/candida, copper overload, adrenal fatigue (mostly healed!!!) (Just redid intro diet the last week of June 2007 and are taking it SLOW and we are finally seeing some real progress!!!!!) > > Hello Wayne, > > I'm so sorry to hear that you're having trouble implementing the diet and > that your wife is unsupportive of it. Guest guest
Wayne- I feel your pain and frustration, and am putting a post-it on my computer to remember to pray for your family every time I sit down at it. Hang in there and my God bless your family. Teena
Guest guest
I'll keep you guys in my thoughts and prayers also. I keep index cards with recipes written on them in an envelope that I use a lot. Can go from computer to kitchen easily. (Will get a real recipe box sometime.) Maybe you could jot down easy to do recipes from the BTVC and pecanbread. Write up a daily menu from what he eats/tolerates/can try from the pecanbread stages for daily use during the week. Leave room for notes also...tolerance, behavior, etc. Maybe make Saturday or Sunday cooking day since it is time consuming in the beginning especially if you make mayo, baked goods, etc. I shop one day and have one cooking day. Sometimes it spills over but... Keep a well maintained grocery list with all supplements so you know where you are with everything. I don't know if any of the above will help with during the week to make things easier for you guys. Shopping/cooking/preparing/cleaning up is time consuming . I'm sure once everything is streamlined it will be easier. As things progress or if anyone has questions, you could leave this list bookmarked and one of you could ask questions. It can be overwhelming at first. I also keep a folder of bookmarks with links to legal supplies/recipes when/if I ever need them. Like mail order nut flours or vitamins. Different articles. Make sure you say Gay's Friday email of all the recipes posted for the week. That way you can go through them and save for later or use now for something new. Guest guest
Thanks for your encouragement. My wife has been supportive, but she isn't convinced that it can work. Her preference is the therapy, and she expects SCD to fail. I've been adding things faster than I should, and his stools look good when he has them. I think his behavioral issues are possibly a yeast flare-up. There's more information in my post from 7/4. I've included it below. Thanks again. Wayne Charlie's Dad, ASD with yeast problems, nut diet 6 mos, scd 11 days Hi, This post is mostly for Sheila (mom of and ), but I'd appreciate any feedback. We had Charlie tested for organic acids at Great Plains about 9 months ago and he showed high for tartaric acid which they indicated was probably a yeast problem. We've been giving him S. Boulardii regularly since then (3B CFU per day). I stopped the S. Boulardii during the intro diet, and re-started it today, two days after starting the honey. (I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer. Maybe I have yeast issues, too.) Aside from spotty periods of irritability during the intro, he seemed to be progressing nicely. Now he's having behavioral regressions (not bad really, he's like he was two or three weeks ago), and I'm guessing he may be having a yeast flare up. His stools, when he has them every two or three days, have been quit firm. Do you think I'm making sense? If so, I read this link (http://www.pecanbread.com/new/yeastsheila.html) and would like some additional pointers. Should I use the natural anti-fungals, or do you think S. Boulardii and Candizyme are enough? If/when I start the anti-yeast regimen in earnest, how limited should the sugars be? Right now we're probably getting less than 6 tablespoons of honey a day between the two of us. Is that too much? How about fruit juice? Do we need to go totally low-carb or are fruit juices less trouble than honey? You may want to know what he's eating so here it is: Intro Foods ----------- Fried eggs w/coconut oil Dilute grape juice Chicken soup with pureed carrots Broiled Bison burger Grape gelatin Glycerin/Baking Soda/Salt toothpaste Hard Boiled Eggs Chicken Pancakes Add-ons ----------- Goat Yogurt Honey Vitamin supplements (Freeda SCD B-complex & Calcium Citrate) S. Boulardii Thanks, Wayne Charlie's dad, ASD, high tartaric acid (yeast probably) Nut diet, 6 months; SCD 8 days.
Guest guest
I'm sorry it's taken so long to respond. Thanks to you all (Sheri, Mel, Teena, Debbie and Sheila) for your encouragement and advice. I spoke to my wife, and she is (rightly) concerned about the large amount of protein I've been giving Charlie. She's OK with my going forward, and trying to fix what I believe to be a yeast problem. She is mostly supportive of the diet, but she does have periods of negativity about it, and those are always pretty frightening for me. Here is what he's been eating Intro Foods ----------- Fried eggs w/coconut oil Dilute grape juice Chicken soup with pureed carrots Broiled Bison burger Grape gelatin Glycerin/Baking Soda/Salt/Saccharine toothpaste Hard Boiled Eggs Chicken Pancakes Add-ons ----------- Goat Yogurt Honey Vitamin supplements (Freeda SCD B-complex & Calcium Citrate) S. Boulardii Unsweetend applesauce Tomato Sauce He was on the nut diet for about 6 months prior to the intro diet. The only thing on this list that he didn't have during the nut diet was the toothpaste and the B-complex. Everything is home-made except the supplements and probiotics. The Yogurt is made from the GI ProHealth starter. My impression is that the wheels really started to come off when I added the honey, and my intent is to proceed under the assumption that the issue is a yeast flare up. Any advice you can provide about dealing with yeast would be appreciated. Thank you all again, Wayne
Guest guest
Wayne, I'm praying for your son's health and the SCD, and also for you and your wife to have oneness of heart and mind in this. Has she read any of the success stories through this list or on any of the internet sites? Or would she be willing to post her concerns to the list to get input about them? I didn't occur to me to have her post her questions to this group. That's a very good idea. Thank you very much. Wayne
